They're made in Canada, right?

Constructionwise, are they on the same level as the UA stuff?

Mark,

The Ho's are made in BC.
hahahaha........

Ho does the custom builds for UA so the quality is the same. Mark has the faceplates and a better grip on marketing and cosmetics. But he's just a middleman for Ho's product really. They're fine with the deal the have....to each his own

The thing is great.

It's an attenuator

Sorry JoeF-

Yukong Ho makes attenuators. He's the guy who designed the "Ultimate Attenuator". I've had him make a few mods to his typical build and have really enjoyed the product and wanted to share. It's the thing in the top part of the rack the 2 space unit...

200watt
Rackmounted
2 footswitchable levels
100v variac tap on front
upgraded switches
better appearance...though he needs to ditch the lablemaker!
Off/on switch on front w/led
Plexi switch on front
Fan switch on front
FX LOOP!!!

I got my first Ho on Tues - feel like a pimp now. The fan is a little loud, though (my only complaint - otherwise it's great).

Is this made by Ho of Ho's Electronics on Kingsway, Burnaby BC?

I tried one of these (proto/old version) back in the mid 90's. It's great that his stuff has caught on.

It's very nice. The fan on/off switch is a must for recording IMHO. Also I had him beef up the switches and put all the controls on the front. The rack reach around is a no no on any gig. I just plug the head into the front of the Furman, and plug the speaker cables into the head and cab. Nice for sure. It does still smell like solder when it gets hot though....poor little dummy load being silverbacked by my mean old Marshall!

That would be a concern to me. Smelling solder is NOT a good sign according to Mr. Ho. When I asked him about using my lower rated Ultimate Attenuator with my 100 watt Marshall he said "OK but turn it off when you smell solder".

Depends on the options you order. I paid $465 for a 100-watter w/line out, plexi & bedroom switches, footswitchable dual volume.

I have the Mini 10-watt out attenuator Mr. Ho makes arriving any day now. I ordered it about 4-5 weeks ago and it shipped a few days ago. I psyched!

I finally got my Ho Attenuator and its great! Lets me open up my Two-Rock Jet at condo-comfortable volumes!

The Ho Attenuator just got in this afternoon. Its wonderful and lets my amps overdriven tones fill out perfectly. I ordered the smaller version Mr. Ho offered which allows you to put up to 50W in and outputs a max of 10W (10 Watts is a lot still for indoors and basically 2/3-3/4 the volume of the Jet at 20W).

Anyways - its basically a mini-ultimate attenuator so you could use it for whisper quite bedroom tones at the volume of laptop speakers all the way up to a thumping 10W that might be enough for smaller jams.

The Ho does not alter the tone much at all - I find I just roll the treble up a tad and that compensates for any hi-end loss. I can get nice full creamy gain now even without the boost engaged on the drive channel. I was comparing the Jet to my ZenDrive and the Jet obviously has a much clearer present superior tone when just comparring the two with that low-med gain setting for blues. For higher overdrive levels though the Jet was getting harsh at low levels where the Zendrive (though not as clear/present as the amp drive) would get to those great saturated violin-like sustaining tones. Now with the attenuator I get the best of both worlds - all the clear presence and string definition of the amps integrated overdrive while also being able to tap into those chewy high gain overdrive tones at comfortable volumes.

This thing cost $245 CAD and its the perfect solution for anyone with great lower wattage amps if you need to throttle the thing back for condo's/apartments/or even live sound applications that are a little smaller and more intimate. For another 100-200 I could have gotten the standard attenuator but with an amp that is 20 or 35 watts out the Mini Ho Attenuator seemed to be the ideal device to compliment lower wattage amps in need of attenuation.

I'd love to add an effects loop to mine. how does the loop work?

jackaroo
02-09-2009, 05:47 PM
The loop works really well, but it's a wet dry rig...not a typical FX loop that's blending the FX and the original signal.

I've got one of his attenuators. Works and sounds great, but man, it is a POS inside! First thing I did was wire in a master power switch. Scary workmanship.

Are they Ho's version of the Ultimate Tube Amp?

http://www.ultimateattenuator.com/ultimate_tube_amp.html

and what is on Ho's page

HO'S TUBE AMP

***Under Construction***
PICTURES.....
This product combines a tube amp and an attenuator all into one metal casing.
Ho’s Tube Amp possesses a unique character unlike any other tube amp on the market.
This is a great product if you like to play a bluesy melody or if you want to work it hard and play some rock.
HOW it works: You can use this product as a standalone amp or you can connect another amp and switch in between them interchangeable via a foot switcher. The best part about that is that it can all be carried through one cabinet. This Tube Amp includes a volume, treble, bass, post volume and a switch for a mid boost buttons. The back panel has pots for speaker out, external amp in, and amp switcher.
BENEFITS: you don’t need to carry two cabinets because of the built in attenuator.
Don't believe its capabilities? Come in and try it out!

Nice Jackaroo, you racked the Ho!! excellent idea.

Just took delivery of my Ho a few days ago. I went for the dual volume option, plexi switch and 200W upgrade.

I recently bought a UA with the plexi and bedroom switch and 200W upgrade and outlet.

Fantastic attenuators to tame the 50/100W Marshalls

GET ONE NOW

*****Important- the Ho or Ultimate Attenuators run around 30 ohms, so set your amp at the highest setting, preferably 16 ohms, regardless of the cab. The amp does not see the speaker, but Ho's power amp and the 30 ohm load, then plug it into any cab because the power amp coming to the speaker will be fine.******

I think we have had a communication breakdown. :) I paid $465 for my Ho attenuator, with several options - have never heard of the Ultimate Tube Amp. My amps are an Egnater Rebel 20 and a Gretsch 6156 Playboy.

Ahh... I was getting confused too. The price on the Ultimate Tube Amp jumped way up a few months ago. I bought one when they were much less. I think mine was like $1500 before any additional options - line out, 100 volt tap were like $50 or $100 to add on. I confirmed with Mark when someone pointed this price jump on an older thread on these amps and he said that this was the new price. Quiet a leap - but I'm glad I had good timing.

Tell me of your experiences of the UA with your Rebel 20. Good tunes? Good option for a nice low volume apartment setup?

So far, so good. Like most attenuators, it does get a bit fizzy/thin on extreme settings, so it's not going to offer amazing tone at whisper quiet levels.

The watts switch on the Egnater has a more noticeable effect now, because I can crank up the master volume past 3 o'clock and work with it and the Ho's volume to get a good tone at lower volume settings.

Another satisfied Ho's customer here!
I was in Vancouver on business and I met him. Great guy!
He sure knows his stuff, and playing my motherf****ucking loud amp at home is sure great! I was about to buy, gasp!, a Roland Cube!
As for the quality and appearance, well it's, like, gear, right? If I want sexy, I can look at my wife.
