I feel bad even posting this but I needed to share the excitement. I e-mailed Analogman about 2 weeks ago to ask him about the status of the Sunlion pedal (i.e. if they are ever planning on putting them into production again). He replied that they had 1 lying around the shop as they had built a couple for Doyle and KWS. So I jumped on it. Mike is such a fantastic guy to deal with. He sold it to me at the original price even though these things are rare as hen's teeth and selling for a lot more around here and on e-bay. The pedal is hand stamped so it doesn't have the original Lion eating the Sun graphic but it sounds amazing. It has TI/UK transistors on the Sunface side (similar to high gain NKT275 per AM website). Anyway, since a picture's worth a thousand words and I feel like I'm rambling, here you go. Enjoy

That kick's serious ass! I love my SunLion so much I still feel like I'm in the honeymoon stage... and I've had it for over 2 years! Goes to show that it never hurts to ask.

man, you are lucky! Did he happen to mention if they would be making any more batches in the near future? I've wanted to one of these for quite some time.

Mike is a gentleman I have great respect for.
Everything he has posted to Australia has arrived promptly and professionally packed.
He has answered EVERY email I ever sent him politely and patiently.
I have always appreciated that he has never patronized what I guess to him must be simple/ basic questions which many might already know the answer to.
His customer service is excellent .:AOK
That's icing on the cake as I (like many) love every pedal he has sent me!!!!!!
Cheers Analogman.:BEER

Amazing score! For lack of a sun lion, I run a sun face into a beano boost. those tasty circuits into a cookin' tube amp represent the finest rock n roll recipe on earth.

smogfalls - Mike didn't mention if they were going to be making these again any time soon. If I get more info, I'll post it here. I am getting ready to get off work and go home to enjoy my new stompbox. I hope everyone has a great weekend.

Great pedal... congrats! I scored mine in the emporium just before the prices skyrocketed. I hope he makes them again. I have no desire to sell mine.

Congrats! I've got one myself. One of my favorite pedals. The Beano side is almost worth the price of admission alone! The Beano stacked with the Sun Face together is like PB and J!!!

I remember lusting for a Sunlion a few years back, and finally had an opportunity to buy one in the fall of 2007 at an amazing price. It hasn't come off my board since. Both sides absolutely kick ass. Congrats on the purchase!

NICE!! Very, very cool!
I have to ask...what do you think of those UK/TI trannys?? Can you compare them to the NKT-275's?? I have 2 AnalogMan modded Fuzz Face pedals...one NKT one high gain NKT but I have been really interested in those UK/TI trannys...

I'm glad to see so many other folks who love the Sunlion. I just sold off my Beano here on the emporium since I don't really need it now. I fired this pedal up last night through my Ugly 18 (A great and underated amp by the way) and the sound was pure heaven. Analogman ROCKS!

If I could have only one pedal - the sunlion would be it - use it more than any other pedal!

Wingwalker,
I really like the UK/TI transistors a lot. I think Mike chose them so that this particular Sunlion would be a three stage CV7003 fuzz as opposed to the three stage NKT275 design. By comparison I currently have a regular gain NKT275 and have owned a BC108 sunface in the past year as well. I have not owned a high gain NKT275 though. To my ear, the UK/TI transistors offer more gain than the NKT275 but still remains fairly warm and cleans up pretty well (although not as well as the NKTs) with just the guitar's volume knob. I guess you could say it falls somewhere in between the NKT275 and BC108 but closer to the NKT275 side of the spectrum. Hope this helps.

Nice score.
A question for you Sun Lion owners: I understand that a Sun Lion is a Sun Face followed by a Beano Boost in the same box. Assuming this is correct is there any difference in this pedal vs using the the two currently made products? If the end result is the same, short of the convenience of having them in the same box, I don't see why the Sun Lion brings such a high price.

Yes, that's my understanding. Same as scoring a Sunface and Beano.
I LOVE the Beano Boost pedal.
Simply amazing!!!

chuckmoose - It is exactly the same. I was using a Sunface into a Beano before I found this and it sounded nearly identical (My Sunlion has different transistors in the Sunface part than my NKT 275 Sunface so there is a little more gain on tap). I agree that I would not pay the current used price. That being said, these pedals originally sold for $335 from Analogman (What I paid) which is cheaper than the price of a new Sunface + Beano boost. As an added bonus, the pedal is more compact and you only need 1 battery instead of two. Also, there is only one pedal to remember to turn off when not in use. For all of these reasons, the SunLion is more convenient. That being said, I would stick with the Sunface into the Beano unless Mike starts making these again.

Can you tell me a little about your Ugly 18. Is it the hand wired or PCB version? What kind of cabinet and speakers are you using? I've been considering getting one and your thoughts would be appreciated. thanks

I love the Ugly 18 - it has replaced my Rivera Chubster as my go to gig amp because it is such a great pedal platform (and a lot lighter as well). I have recorded two short clips using this amp that I will post the links to below. Both clips are performed with the Ugly set for a clean sound using pedals for dirt. The first clip uses an Analogman Chorus on the first part and a Musket fuzz on the solo. The second clip features the SunLion with both sides engaged.
To answer your question, I have the handwired head with the matching cabinet containing an Eminence 12" speaker. The cab sounds great with the head and both are very light weight which is a huge plus. The only downside is no reverb. I usually use a little bit of delay to beef things up a bit.

Wow, that's awesome!!
Very classy on Mike's part to be so cool about it.
I only have the KOT and AR20DL but I love em. Would love to own a SunLion someday.
Congrats

The Beano is a Rangemaster clone right? Since these were designed for the darker sounding british amps, how does it sound into an already bright amp, such as a Fender?

I used to own a blackface super reverb and personally did not care for the sound of the Treble booster with this amp at all because it was so bright. Others may disagree but the Beano definitely works better with British style amps IMHO.
