Are strat volume and tone pots linear or log taper??
where can I get 3/8" bushing 250K pots (for strat) with a 6mm ( not 1/4 ") solid shaft (the split shafts are too big, won't fit my knobs)?
Thanks!

1. log taper (also called audio taper)
2. the 1/4" refers to the length of the bushing, not the diameter. The common sizes of split and solid shaft pots can be found here: http://www.acmeguitarworks.com/250K_POTS_C14.cfm
Or if you need to widen your search, try here: http://www.mouser.com/search/Refine.aspx?N=254352

In general yes. You could experiment with linear for tone but I would stick with log for volume always. That goes for pedals and amps as well.

I think strat knobs are pretty much one-size-fits-all.
Regarding metric vs. USA sizes: it's the size of the holes in your pickguard vs. the pot bushing that matters.
And it's pretty easy to ream out a metric hole pickguard to fit a USA size pot - a nice big washer will cover a multitude of sins. New strat pickguards are pretty cheap anyway.
Strat pots are audio/log taper as standard. I've tried linear tone pots and they didn't work so well for me -- little effect through most of the range and then drastic at one end. But it might be useful if you like to do the "tone-pot wah" effect.

Factory pots on Fenders are log all around. Linear works for volume, but not for tone, but it's a moot case if you want the original style anyway, since they are all audio/log.
For the dimensions, put in good CTS pots and replace the knobs (or just open up the holes to fit 1/4") if you have to. It will be much easier than trying to find something with the dimensions you're looking for, while also being of good quality.
