View Full Version : Recommend 15" speaker? The money pit deepens....

I'm bummed out.
I recently got a quite rare bass amp, a Roland Studio Bass 100, from the late '70s. It had issues with the EQ, and I took it in and it turned out to be in much worse shape than I thought. So, I dropped $360 to get a ton of stuff fixed in the amp - the speaker was fine.
Anyhow, the repair guy loaded the amp into the vehicle for my wife, who picked it up for me while I was at work. When I got home I loaded it into the house, and was very careful.
I didnt' get a chance to try it out until today, I plugged in my bass, and the ugly sound of a busted cone greeted my eager ears. I opened it up and sure enough there's a tear in the cone. Whether he did it, I did it, or the first new note of my fretless jazz bass did it, I have no idea, and we'll probably never know.
That's my tale of woe, and it's totally irrelevant except for the sympathy I hope you all feel.
The question is, can anybody recommend a decent replacement speaker? I've never actually bought a speaker before, so would appreciate the input. I want quality, but budget is a definite consideration.
Thanks!

I would recommend having the stock speaker re-coned. It's an economical solution that will not drastically change the sound of your amp the way a modern replacement speaker would. I'm not sure what part of the country you're from but Orange County Speaker Repair in Southern California is reputable.

That's probably the best idea, I wouldn't guess it costs too much. That's what I'll check first. Appreciate the suggestion.

Probably run you around $80.
That would totally be my suggestion.
Otherwise the 400w EV.

There is a very good chance your original speaker is Eminence made(but not marked/labled). They produce speakers stocked in alot of guitar and bass amps.

How bad is the tear. I believe some can be repaired with paper and glue.

Yeh, if you can repair the tear that's a lot cheaper than buying a new speaker. There threads on the net about repairing a speaker tear; it's pretty easy if you are careful. OC Speaker sells a speciality glue for this purpose that I used to repair a cone tear on a JBL with good results.

Also depends where the tear is. If it's on the paper cone, no problem. If it's on the surround holding the cone to the frame, forget it.
Copied from another forum, from a friend who just had a speaker reconed. He typed up the entire process for us to consider:
I've been in need of a re-coning for one of my 12's for a while now. And today I received my re-coned driver.
There have been a few threads on here regarding this topic but, I thought I would give a quick review of the service provided by Orange County Speaker in Southern Ca.
1st-
Simplicity - Print out the repair form online (www.orangecountyspeaker.com (http://www.orangecountyspeaker.com/)) pack it with your speaker and send it off. Done.
2nd-
Time Frame-
For me it was three business day until they received my box and from there it was 5 or 6 business days until they shipped it out. IMO that's pretty fast. I had a back-up Eden driver that I've been using so there was no real stoppage in gear use. Even so, 1 1/2 to 2 weeks turn around is still good.
3rd-
Craftsmanship-
The driver came out of the well packed box in pristine condition. This is my first re-coning so I am not terribly familiar with the entire process but, I was looking for any signs of poor assembly or dust, glue spots, or material remains in and around the entire driver and there were none of the sort to be found.
Here is my 1 and only complaint.
The hard gasket that surrounds the exterior of the driver (where the 4 mounting holes are) seemed a bit intrusive of the actual mounting hole positions. Leaving barely enough room for the head of the screw to seat itself all the way down. In my case the gasket actually popped off when I put the first screw back in. I applied some heavy duty super glue to the 2" area where it came undone and we'll see how that goes. Needles to say, I promptly got a fresh exacto blade and went to work on the other three mounting hole locations, making a bit more room for the screw head to fit with out popping off more of the gasket.
So, not terrible but not 100% outstanding in that dept.
Anyway the cone seems much more firm and as I said, the entire assembly looks beautiful.
4th-
Price-
$12 Shipping out
$60 Parts
$15 Labor
$13 Return shipping
So far $100 looks pretty good compared to going rate for a new driver from Eden (which I think is about $175 plus shipping, etc.)
5th-
Overall sound-
This portion of the review will have to wait until after tonight's show. I will be putting it right to work, as we will be playing from 8-12 tonight. I hope it's ready for the challenge!
Anyway guys and gals, If all goes well tonight, I will be packing up the other 12 from my original 212xlt for the same service. And will be requesting they look a little closer when applying the gasket near the mounting holes.
Thats it for now!
Take it ez

HA!
I used coffee filters and glue to get me through a summer festival season!!
Still sounded like shit- but at least it worked.
