Check this out!!!

These are multiple YouTube clips (mostly instructional and performance videos) edited into slick mega-mashups by Israeli funk producer, Kutiman. They're not just patchwork assemblages, they're sample-based original creations. What you see is what you hear.

I just listened to 3 of them and am completely blown away!!

If I could have a top three:

1. The Mother of All Funk Chords
Just for the shock factor! Lots of things going on, and it has the rock-on-good-people dude with the guitar.

2. Just a Lady
That girl had me hooked with her soulful tune. Simpler than the others, but we know that's where the hits are at.

3. I M New
I dig the rap parts.

Coolest thing I've seen. :D Thank you kutiman.

Really dug I'm New (my fav of the bunch) and Babylon Band. Have to say though, I'm surprised at folks' reaction acting like this is the wave of the future or something new. Something new in the respect that he's using youtube clips sure, but it's basically the same principle DJ's have been doing since the 80s...searching through bins and bins of vinyl....sampling bits here and there and comping it together into a final piece. I'm not taking anything away from the guy...he did a bang up job and editing video for this type of thing is probably more of a pain in the ass than straight audio.

Snail
03-10-2009, 12:47 PM
It's not the wave of the future, you're right. But what amazes me is the vision that this guy had. I mean, when you look at the videos that he took... most of them look like... well... I mean, they're so random. Like, just some guy testing out sounds on a synthesizer for 20 minutes, or some guy teaching an F major scale on the bass (these are 2 of the ones that went into "Just a Lady").

The incredible thing to me is that he crafted a song out of this stuff that is a really good song, without adding anything. Sure, DJ's have been sampling and looping for a long time, but this is not just sampling and looping.

It's not just what he's done, but how well he's done it. The guy has some serious talent. Anyway, I found it pretty inspiring and it's already given me some ideas... :BEER

Guys,
You should do yourselves a favor and check out a band called the Books. Check out their "The Lemon of Pink" record.

http://www.thebooksmusic.com/

Equally as cool and impressive - made from "found" tapes, VHS tapes, etc...from pawn shops, etc....all kinds of stuff along with cello played over the loops. They've been around for several years now if I remember correctly.

You'll like it if you like this YouTube mash-up stuff.

Happy listening!

this kind of thing is gonna turn up everywhere now...you wait...it'll be on tv adverts before long

i have to hand it to the guy....the incredible amount of work he's put in is quite humbling and his obvious musical talent and craft are unquestionable. there is a slight novelty factor going on though and when we've seen it done by other people (not as well) 1000 times over, it'll get pretty stale.

i've seen about half the vids at this point and enjoyed them all enormously! he seems like a really nice guy too.
