Been learning lots of "new rock" i guess you'd call it, for a cover band i'm playing in. It seems like everything is dropped down to absurd levels. wtf?

You mean there's more than one tuning??? :huh

Tuning down is no different than using a capo to tune up. And bands have been doing it since Black Sabbath. It ain't exactly a new thing.

Having said that, more modern rock bands are returning to .440.

Rick Rubin made Metallica record much of Death Magnetic in standard tuning.

If we're going to cover a song that's lower than 1/2 step flat, we just do it in that tuning.

My Greco LP has been in drop C# tuning for the past coupe of weeks after messing around with the tune Dogman and Complain by Kings X one night.. They have a bunch of songs in that tuning. I just start the itunes rolling and I'm either in tune and play along or move on to the next song.

I used to experiment with alternate tunings...mmm... early 90's I guess... I decided it was a waste of time and that I could make just as much noise in standard tuning... I learned to be more creative with my playing, rather than leaning on the tunings... I think I'm a better musician for it today... YMMV

Or try playing a bunch of Pearl Jam and you will run across about a dozen alternate tunings without trying too hard.
But yeah, you are right, droopped versions of standard heve been very trendy in recent years.
I like Eb mostly myself, just has a nice feel.
