Just got a really great sounding amp on a trade, but I am not sure of exactly what it is. I got it from a guy who said he bought it from a guy named Vladimir something, and it originally was built into a combo amp. The previous owner had it built into a head.

The front face plate says "Fuchs Y2K". On the face it says "Overdrive Supreme". I know it is a Dumble colne, but the guy I got it from said Scott Lerner modded it, or maybe that it had the "Scott L Modd". I am not sure. It supposedly has a Bandmaster chassis. It is signed by Andy Fuchs with just AF 2004. It also has a sticker on the front saying "Fuchs Audio 0089"

I guess what I am wondering is, is there a mod called the Scott L Mod, or was it just modded and tweaked by Scott L. It is a 2004 model. But I have never seen one that looked like this. It is also supposed to modded to SLX specs.

I am also wondering how good is this amp compared to other Dumble style amps? It looks and sounds really good, but it does not sound as good as my friends Two Rock Emerald Pro or his older Quinn Dumble amp, but it still sounds awesome. I would say it has a more rounder sound on the clean channel than the Quinn and Two Rock, but the OD just doesnt quite get the articulation of the other Dumble amps I have heard. But the clean is really sweet for a D-style amp.

Maybe ScottL will be around to help. I love his tone and playing. Oh yeah, mine has a 100 watt and 50 watt mode. It also has a Full/Studio switch, and a pentode/triode switch. I have been trying to figure out how to upload photos but it keeps telling me my files are too big. I guess I will just post them on photobucket and post a link. I will take some pics now. And I can also email them easily as well.

Thanks everyone, I guess I am a Dumble noob somewhat. I traded my prized Port City Dual 50 Head, which I now miss dearly. Daniel Klein will definately be hearing from me soon. I think they are on par with each other quality wise, but I have noticed the amp is kinda hard to dial in. Plus I hear there is 4 trim pots inside the chassis you can adjust to playing style. Does anyone have any advice about this subject. Please excuse my noobness in advance. I forgot to mention I work at a music store that has a really good amp tech so he would be the one tweaking the 4 trim pots. I still havent shown him the amp, but I need to, maybe he will have some info. I also noticed inside the chassis some corrossion on the output transformer, not much, but if this amp was truely built in 2004 should it have corrosion already? It isnt rust, but more just corrosion.

Thanks now for reading my long rant. Also, does anyone know how much this amp sold for new back in 2004? I would like to have an idea in case I trade it later on. ScottL, if you are out there, one of your fans has a couple questions. Also I need to know how to play as well as yourself, I just cant cut it, LOL!

Maybe Andy Fuchs will be around to answer also!!! I would love to get some additional mods done if there are any other good ones availible!

Most importantly I would like to say to anyone planning on getting a Fuchs, do it!!!! They are truely amazing beasts.....

Rather than write a book, kindly drop me an e-mail, and we can go over the history, tweaks, and details regarding your amp. It's not a Dumble clone, although it finds it's DNA in that gene pool.

Based on the description, the amp is a) well over 5 years old b) may or may not have been tweaked by ScottL c) the rust you're concerned about is normal, as the original stock transformers and chassis were reused.

I won't comment on the tone comparisons, as we're not exactly sure what you have their and it's condition.

Thanks Andy. Sorry to write a book. I really like the amp alot now that I have had it for a few days. It just took a minute to dial in. I noticed it likes humbuckers best.

Thanks for the info. I wasnt even completely sure it was a Fuchs amp. I thought maybe it just had a Fuchs faceplate added, but I am not sure. It has changed hands quite a few times it sounds like. It also has been changed from a combo amp to a head like I said before.

I didnt like it as much as the PC at first, but once I found the right guitar and settings, it definately nails the RF tone I was after. But I like the cleans best out of all the Dumble style amps I have heard. Thanks Andy, I appriciate your time and your work. I have wanted a Fuchs ever since I saw Dweezil Zappa with one. I didnt even know what a Dumble amp was back then, I just knew I liked the tones.

The amp is really cool, and I think I will be holding on to this one. Thanks for the chassis corrosion info, I feel much better now that I hear that is normal. When I traded it, I was worried it just looked like a Fuchs, instead of actually being one.

Are there any mods availible worth getting?

:bowTouche sales man! Sorry for the rant like I said before.:bow

Now I know! Now that I know it isnt a Dumble Clone, the comparisons I made to the Two Rock and Quinn really arent valid, but I would still say the cleans on the Fuchs I have are nicer sounding to my ears than the TR or Quinn Amp, but it is all personal taste.

What I really should have said was "The Two Rock and Quinn nails the R. Ford tone more closely than my new Fuchs". But now I know it isnt even a Dumble Clone, but something similar.

But I tell you what, this thing looks idenical to alot of ODS heads out there I have seem. It definately looks different than the current Fuchs ODS heads being made now.

I appologize for the confusion, but that is why I posted this.:jo:hide:bkw

"...older Quinn Dumble amp..."? Are you talking about the SDO? If so, these amps are fairly new to the market. I own one of the first models made (albeit there's no serial # on mine) and took delivery on it last summer. I believe that less than 5 or 6 were produced before mine. Does your buddy own one of these? How old is "old"? But, yes, the SDO really does nail the 90's Ford tone, depending on how you adjust the internal HRM stack (which can drastically alter the OD tones).

If it says Y2K, that means the build was 2000, and it's certainly not a production amp.

Yes he has a Quinn SDO, but he also has a TR Emrald Pro, that lucky SOB.....Heady Dude is his screen name here on TGP.

I have tried all three side by side, and it is really hard to find anything bad about any of them. But the Quinn is very very close to the TR IMHO, but I think my Fuchs has the best cleans of the bunch for sure.

I was concerned when I first pugged it in and said "well this doesnt sound very Robbin Ford like, but it sounds great. But at the same time different. I also like the features on the Fuchs best of all I think too, just because of the 50/100 watt switch. Not to mention the Full/Studio switch and the pentode/triode switch. With all of these you can get very articulate tones at lower volumes. The other two dont sound good on the overdrive channel until about band practice volume.

Is the fact that is not a production model a good thing or a bad thing? Does that mean it was truely a custom built amp, or does that mean it was pieced togeather from a kit? Hahaha! Wow, I ask to many questions forgive me Andy.

Also what Fuchs O/D pedal would you reccomend to go along with this amp? I was thinking about the Plush drive, but I already own a Zendrive II and a Jetter Gain Stage Red. Will the Plush tone sound similar, or are they all kinda in the same ballpark?

It's a modified Fender, not exactly a custom built amp, but close :). As far as pedals go, the pure gain give it (and any amp, including d-style amps), a great kick in the pants. Especially bridges the gap from single coils to buckers for sure.

A pedal like the Cream or the Noxious would offer a different flavor of overdrive from the Plush Drive, which is in the Zen/GSR/camp, and was designed to be pretty close to the amp overdrive sonically. That pedal (check Funk Plush Drive Blues on the soundfile player on our site) http://www.fuchsaudiotechnology.com/products-plush.php may be more Ford-like than that generation of mod (although I'm not sure what mods were done to the amp). That particular file came pretty nice (forgive my $hitty playing). Here's another: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NLmg2ENYphs&feature=email . That's the Cream pedal btw w/a Hamer and a Swart amp.

Have fun !

I loved the cleans on my Fuchs TDS. Andy knows his cleans!!! And, they sound amazing with OD pedals upfront. But, I also love the SDO cleans. They're different, but really sweet too. In fact, of all the amps I currently own, the SDO cleans are definitely my fave.

As for the SDO/E-Pro needing a little more volume to come alive, I believe that's an attribute of the HRM vs. non-HRM circuit architecture. Andy just recently introduced an HRM version so I'd assume this older mod is non-HRM, which sort of inherently sounds a little smoother at lower volume. But, I find the HRMs sound harmonically richer and a little more touch-sensitive after you turn them up a little.

Andy,

I've been gassin' for MOST of your pedals for some time now! They all sound amazing! I'm just not sure which one(s) I want to purchase first.

I'd also like to give your HRM a run. One can never have too many great-sounding amps! Not only that, but mine are holding their value better than my 401K!

I hear ya!!! The last one was a great time, but proved to be an incredibly expensive one for me...and Joe. We stayed in Manhattan. But, did I say how much it was?

I think I have a trade offer. I think I will swap my JGSR for a Fuchs Plush Drive pedal.
I never thought I would get rid of my JGSR (because I love it) but maybe the Fuchs will match better anyway. I am on my third JGSR pedal. I keep trading them thinking I have found something better, but I always go back. But I know Brad J designed those to go along with Blackface style amps, so now the hunt begins again.

I am so excited! Major GAS kicking in. Must resist...urge to.....buy every........Fuchs pedal.........Must hide credit cards....must not trade, ah who cares. !!!!!!!!

I think I want the Fuchs Plush Drive FX and the Pure Gain. Does that sound like a good combo?

Fuchsaudio

That's one of our more popular combinations.... :)

Thanks Andy, you have been a gentleman and a saint. I was kinda wondering if those two pedals were a popular combo.

Wow, in a week, I changed my amps and my pedals. I am a total Fuchs guy now! I cant wait until I get the pedals. I will tell you what I think vs. the JGSR and Zendrive II pedals. They were both A++++++ pedals IMHO, but I guess thats just it. Its all about personal taste.

I was kinda stuck on the Blackface circuit for a while, but now I see the light. I mainly play Hamers (Custom Artist and Newport Pro) and Fuchs and Hamers go togeather like peanut butter and chocolate. I wasnt real impressed when I plugged in the Don Grosh RC and Bent top Custom, but hopefully the pedals will help. Single coils sound different than through my other amps, but through the Fuchs, it sounds like the highs get through great, but the bottom end is slightly thinner than normal. Is there a way to mod this beauty so it sounds more full, or would you just go with the pedal idea?

Thanks my friend!
