View Full Version : Holy Smokes! My Zinky Mofo has 580v on the plates!
Man! Can JJ 6L6's take it? Bob at Eurotubes says they take 600V in an ampeg, then he replied to an email I sent saying they took 560.
Anyone have experience with 6L6 GC's that can handle this?
I HATE SOVTEK 5881's!

That's a pretty nasty high voltage you have there!Does that amp use 6550"s normally?Or is your meter faulty?
Must have tons of clean headroom.
The voltage may not be the issue, but the current at that high voltage certainly is.If those tubes see a tad too much current they could go up in smoke.
I would be certain that your readings are correct or E-Mail Zinky and ask.

Be sure you're measuring the voltage correctly. Honestly, I'm unsure how you could possibly get a high error reading, usually it would be low. That said, anything is possible...
Contact Zinky, they should be able to help you out.
I'm using a Weber bias rite. At 60% it's about 570v. The amp has a transformer optimized for the Sovtek 5881.

MOFO indeed ! Why not ask Zinky himself ?
The Sovtek 5881-6L6's (with the tapered base) will handle gobs of voltage and current safely. They are rebranded or renumbered Soviet submarine radar tubes of some kind and are beefy beasts.
Some people are running the TAD's at high voltages (like 750 in D-clones), but I wouldn't go over 500 and change with them. Same with the JJ's, you are pushign your luck. I've used the Sovteks in 6L6 Music Mans without issue.
I biased them at 560V, 42ma, which is right at 24 watts or 80%. Compression, grease, still enough definition, VERY grindy, bloom, oh my, and in spec per Bob at Eurotubes: Hi: I have run them in Ampeg amps in place of 7027A’s at 560 plate volts with no issues. JJ states 500 volts max so this is really all of the info I can give you first hand.

In the famous words of what's her name....That's HOT!!

But oh man, with Mullard shorties in V1 and V2 and a long plate in the PI, this thing browns out so smooth and satisfying...I must have 4x12!!!
Wow, Andy Fuchs FTW. This must be a new renaissance, so many artisans and creators interacting. This is radness.

Can't forget Nial at Solid Cables. My sound wasn't achieved until I got Dynamic Arc Ultras. They're so musical... When you finally get tone after years and years of working to discover relationships, the reward is so satisfying!

Sometime you gotta go with what works. Don't buck the system
