I love amps... and I really love many of the off brand amps that often are neglected and sitting in the dusty corner of some music shop.

Well here's a thread to show off your Supro, Valco, National, Danelectro, Silvertone, Alamo, Univox, Kalamazoo, Airline, Kay, Lectrolab, Teisco, Premier, Sano, Gretsch, Harmony.... etc.

If possible, PLEASE post tube line-up and speaker details... but don't let that stop you from posting pics if you don't have that info.

Here we go... here's my 1956 National Stage Star with (4) oval 6x11" Rola AlNiCo speakers, Tubes: 5V4, 6L6GB, 6L6GB, 6SC7 P/I, 5879 inst, 6SJ7 mic, 6SQ7 trem.

I haven't taken any pictures of my own, but here's a clip of my Kalamazoo Reverb 12 posted by the shop before my girlfriend got it for me for Christmas. It was a very nice surprise. Pretty much all original with the cover and footswitch. I did remove the death cap and added a grounded plug. Planning on a different speaker and replacing the electrolytics.

A pair of '66-ish Kalamazoo Model IIs. Got 'em as a pair, the one on the right was badly damaged. Made one very nice OEM amp out of the two, and the other is now a FrankenAmp (http://www.thegearpage.net/board/showthread.php?t=519465). (Am Std Strat and an LP BlondeTop, bg.)

http://img183.imageshack.us/img183/9/twokalamazoomodeltwos2bu4.jpg

A '69 Univox U-1221 w original footswitch. "100W" 2 x 6L6GC that actually pushes about sixty (but clean) with 620+V on the plates. Atop is the aforementioned FrankenAmp in early mod doing duty as sort of a Hertzoggian dirt pedal, back before the really major mods. Guitar: '85 Aria Pro II Ironman Standard. (The Nuge's auto on the wing. Likewise auto'd [different Ted tho) Weber Mass atop the Univox.)

Nice amps guys!!

Nigel11 - I believe yours is a mid-40's Supro amp.

Here are a few more:

1948 McKinney/Valco Supreme amp... 10" Rola field-coil speaker... tubes: 6J7, 6SC7, (2) 6V6GT, 5Y3.... I sold this one after posting this YouTube video (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_7Iz7gdhh_E)

http://www.kilback.net/pics/48McKinney-F.jpg http://www.kilback.net/pics/48McKinney-R.jpg

1954 Eddie Alkire amp (same as the Supro Airline model 1666)... 10" Rola f/c speaker and 6sQ7, 6SC7, (2) 6V6, 5Y3 tubes... similar amp to the one above but sounds better:

http://kilback.net/pics/alkire1.jpg http://kilback.net/pics/alkire2.jpg

1954 Bronson Melody King by Valco, similar to the National Sportsman or Deluxe... Jensen P12Q, tubes: 6SL7, 6SC7, 6L6G, 6L6G, 6AX5GT.

Fairly rare silvertone. Contrary to the badge, it's not stereo or hi-fi. Great for raunchy early Ron Woods type tones. on of my fave single ended 6 watt amps, 6v6, 6x5gt, 12ax7. I've got Airline-badged dano w/ the same tube complement. Dunno if it's the primitive circuit or the tube lineup w/ 6x5 rectifier, but these are just great amps for rauncy ragged guitar tone. N. Daniels had it down, from circuitry to appearance, gotta love his stuff.

I used to have one VERY similar labeled "Aztek" that had 3 of those 6X9 speakers. It sounded fantastic and was one of my favorite amps ever for, believe it or not, bass tracks!

Here's my humble offering:

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v491/TravisE/DSC00284.jpg

Danelectro Maestro. 1x12" speaker, 2x6L6's. The amp's at my drummer's studio and I can't remember the other tubes. I know it has one of those 6SJ7's in it. It has 2 channels, and vibrato that's just delicious!

Great thread, BTW!!

I have a little combo from Regal that my tech said was apparently a lap steel amp from the 50s. I'll try to get a pic up. Eight inch speaker, one knob on the back, that's it. Very clean, but if you put any boost pedal in front of it and push the tubes, it's fabulous-nasty. I got back the Jensen it came with, but it needs a re-cone. My tech put an Oaktron in it. I know nothing about speakers. It just went quiet on me and my tech has retired. I think I'll check the solder joints....

Don't have any photos, but I got a Silvertone 1485 4-6L6 (Monster) this thing has so much headroom yet rocks with a Les Paul.

I got a 1948 Premier 50 that's pretty cool too.

This is a really cool thread!:drool

Anyone know what amp Muddy Waters played in the late 40's, I believe his first "Electric" recordings were in 1946 or 48 with a Telecaster. The album "More Real Folk Blues"

That stuff is a Gretsch archtop with a sliding DeArmond pickup. The Telecaster as we know it wasn't even around in '46 or '48. Not sure about the amp. I think he got the Goldtop after the Gretsch, then the white maple neck Telecaster... then the red one.

My kind of thread.

I love these odd beasts . . . . hopefully a thread like this will not psh the prices up . . . everybody keep saying: boutique amps are best. leave those trashy little oddballs alone!!

Here is my PANaramic: 2 x 6v6, 5y3, 3x 12ax7, 12au7 12"
(its in the middle)

I am just rediscovering this amp after putting a new Yamaha speaker in it: sounds great but I want to get a real good Alnico in there.

I don't have many pics of it: here is an old pic - you can see it in B&W behind the guitar that has since been through its changes:

I just got this today and I'm really happy with it. It has an 8" alnico jensen and an amperex 12ax7. I was really surprised at how smooth the breakup was with a pedal boosting the amp it sounds really smooth and not ratty at all. It also just gets to band level, which I never thought a single 8" would do.

Posted this in an other thread, but here's a little more info.

1970 Guild, the faceplate says Thunderbass but the badge on the power amp section says Quantum (the pre and power amps are totally separate inside the head).

Pair of 6550 finals, 3 12AX7's in the preamp, plus a bunch of weirdo tubes in the power amp - a lone 7591A, some 12AX7s and 12AU7As, another random old preamp tube.

Insanely loud (gigged with it as a bass amp many times), sweet tone, very wide frequency range. A lot of vintage amps don't have a ton of top and bottom end, but this goes very low (bass amp), and very, very high. Much brighter than any vintage tube amp I've ever used (mostly Fenders), but still very balanced. You really have to crank it to get the dirt out but when you do it's sweet (and very loud!)
I've heard it said it's a lot like a Marshall Plexi without the presence control.

When I went to look at the amp my first thought was that the Jensen couldn't possibly be the original speaker, even thought the output transformer is mounted on the speaker. Then I saw Suproman's amp and another Supro, all with the Jensen sticking out, all dented & scratched the same way.

Dave, Did you happen to score that one from ebay? I think I remember seeing it listed a few months ago. From what I gather, Valco often used Jensen speakers in the larger amps...P15n, P15p, and P15ps. They also used Utah 12s and 15s, and the Rolas too of course.

No, but the guy who was selling it had given the amp to someone who does sell on Ebay. He apparently couldn't move it so it came back. He also had a '64 Fender Reverb unit & a tube Echoplex, both of which are now sold.

And the Pignose G40V with an Eminence speaker, different tubes, and a Weber Beam Blocker (complete with faux aluminum dome):

'54(ish) 1331 Silvertone. 8inch speaker, single 6V6, Volume, Tone - two inputs(!) just in case you wish to break out singing too.

IIRC, HarryJ posted a fantastic clip (at least one) with one a while ago, if you want to hear what it sounds like in the hands of a pro:

Oh snap! I've never seen one of those. What are the controls on the front? How's it sound?

Thanks guys.

Travis - There are two channels.

Channel two's controls are actually on top (go figure?!) - volume, bass, treble, reverb (level), vibrato strength, vibrato speed.

Channel one's controls are below - v-b-t.

The amp is loud and robust sounding. On each channel, the v-b-t knobs are all very interactive with eachother, so it takes some work finding different sweet spots, but there are a few and you can get some really unusual sounds out of it as well. Gets a real nice bluesy crunch when you dime it (quite loud too). Absolutely gorgeous cleans and nice mild grind too.

The Dano reverb (I think Nate Daniels' guitar amp reverb circuit was one of the first) is kinda primitive and weak sounding. It's not to good. I don't use it much. The vibrato is not true vibrato...but it sounds different from regular (amplitude modulation) tremolo too. It's funky. I'll try to get a youtube demo done one of these days.

Just picked up this cat-scratched gem, a 1966 Harmony H-420. Technically a bass amp (and it does sound great with bass), it also sounds great for guitar. 2x 6L6, 2x 12AX7, solid-state rectifier, 15" Jensen. Built by Valco. It has one channel, but different resistors on the guitar and voice inputs, so there's still some tonal variation there.

Just got this one a couple weekends ago locally off of craigslist. I am kind of an alamo nut and had been looking for one of these for years. Got it CHEAP cause the guy said he had listed it before but didn't get much of a response (!!!).

It sounds VERY good cranked, not much for clean but does need some new caps. Has a 15" jensen in a ported cab.

The second, I just got in the other day and haven't even taken it out of the box yet. This is interesting because even the seller himself wasn't sure what it was. As far as I can tell, it has the same control panel and layout as the 1615T, but with a 2x10" configuration instead of the 15".

I'm going to send an email to Terry Dobbs pretty soon to get the final word.

the twin 10 one is the 1690T Coronado.. same amp as the 1615t(but 1615t had a single 15")

I haven't seen that model, but I'd put it at about 1942-1947. It has the Valco-era logo plate, which suggests 1942 or later, but it's not in the 1948 Supro catalog (or later). You have what appear to be the original tubes in there as well. Very cool!

My mom used this to play her Rickenbacker lap steel thru back in the late forties. I ended up gutting it (as a kid,) but kept it all these years. I use it to try out all kinds of 12 inch speakers. In small clubs I set it on the far side of the stage just to increase coverage without turning up. Great ol' workhorse of a cabinet. How about that factory ported side panel? Gotta know these people knew what they were doing.

I always wanted to try this creature since I saw it in the aspen pitman book. my friend has the single 15 challenger from this period and I have the commando and the little single 12 called the leader, but never tried this particular version of the 2-12!

The Leader is the one that I have. It's a really cool little amp. I need to change the speaker and caps in mine but...well, I don't have the energy. LOL.

There's a picture of my home boy low budget Fender tone for days stack. (!)

Diason Bovine - Australian made circa 1960's

This is my ugly little wonder. Its about 4 watts output.

It has a solid state preamp and rectifier with a 6GW8 power tube. The speaker is a 6-inch 15 ohm Hi-Flux Speaker.

It also features horrible orange tolex with gold plastic trims.

Sounds great through a 10" external cab. Not much clean to be had but some great break up.

My latest is a Montgomery Ward Standard Model. I Believe it's a Danelectro. I've seen knobs on other Danos that were identical. If someone could verify that for me it would be cool.

This was all I could find on the amp. http://www.guitar-museum.com/guitar-28638-Montgomery-Wards-Tube-Amplifier-Guitar-Airline-6V6GT

It has been totally re-capped, and had a three prong cord installed. I switched out the original Rola loudspeaker for a Jensen P12R. The Rola sounded rather flabby. The P12R on the other hand is righteous! I'm Diggin' this amp! 2x 6V6, 2x 6SJ7, 6X5 rect.

Thanks. Not real sure what it actually is...an old powered extension speaker for a stereo I think. The 1/4" jack on the back, though done very nicely so it looks original, appears to be a modification in place of an RCA jack. That would be typical of the stereo application.

Once I learn a bit more about the cute little power tube, in terms of bias, bypass, NFB, and other voicing options, I'll dial 'er up better suited to guitar use. Still, grubby-dirty fun to play just the way it is. Gotta love the cheeseball two-way speaker setup too. :)

Dig it! These little Kzoo's are terrific little amps, esp when you TLC the bits. And you have the trademark little frayed corners on the Tolex-sorta stuff. If you get a wild hair, stick a speaker-out on it and hook the chassis up to a nice 1x12 Jensen-flavored open-back. Instant SE-sorta Tweed Deluxe.

I need to get some more pictures happening, but this is my 1967 Moody BA-17. Bert Moody was just about the only successful amp builder in Sydney in the '60s, when imports were particularly expensive. Another great recording amp. The consensus seems to be that they're not good bass amps by contemporary standards, but for blues guitar... lovely. Most of my effects are old themselves, so they seem to pair up well with the Moody.

I don't have any on-brand amps ... :D

1967 Traynor YGM-2 GUitar Mate -- still has the Marsland speaker and death cap as I just got it at the weekend -- amazing what you can trade a Q-tron +$150 for sometimes. It's off to the tech tomorrow to defuse the ticking little yellow electrocution time bomb...

Cool! I picked up a slightly newer YGM-2 about a year ago (can't seem to date it.. but my guess is '71 or '72), and you are the first person I have seen that also has the YGM-2.. I see tons of YGM-3's around, but the 2 seems to be much more rare.

Really cool amp, and I actually like the marsland that came in mine.. They seem to get a lot of flack for being flubby, but I think the one I've got has a certain low efficiency charm.
The tremolo on this amp is also unreal.

Anyways, have fun with that amp.

It sounds a lot like a Magnatone 213, but with more gain on tap. I've found it to be one of the best amps for my electric mandolin, though the vibrato sounds a lot better on guitar.

To add to the thread:

I live in Brandon MB, which happens to be the town where Albert Johnson lived and ran Johnson sound systems, starting some time in the 40's I believe.
http://www.tone-lizard.com/Johnson_Amplifiers.htm

Anyways, I recently picked up a Johnson amp. I haven't been able to find any model stamps on it, or any date stamps, so it's really quite hard for me to say much about the amp's origin. But it's an interesting amp.

It uses all octal tubes (6sc7x2, 6sn7 (I think), 6L6GCx2, and a 5u4gb rectifier) and seems to have a custom hammond OT as well, it's small and has no model number on it that I can see. The PT is also hammond, and is a 273BX.

The speaker is a 12" alnico of some sort it would appear.. and is labelled as an Electronic Musical Instrument speaker with no model number on the back (I haven't pulled it out yet).

I'm not sure if this was some sort of prototype or experiment at some point, but I'm excited to tune it up somewhat.
At the moment it is functional, but is very poor sounding.. Fairly low output, and none of the pots seem to do much.

Obviously I need to change the electrolytics, but I think I am also going to replace the majority of coupling caps also and some resistors.. Probably change the circuits somewhat, as it's not very functional as it stands.
I'll stick with the Tranny's, even though the OT is most likely undersized, and attempt to use the original tubes also.

If anyone knows anything more about this amp, please let me know.
I'm interested in the year it might have been made, and also the speaker.. I haven't heard of this particular model before, I wonder how good it will sound when I restore the amp.

Here's a few of my off branders. The highlight of this picture is second from the right. It is a Lectrolab R500. It has the same setup as a Tweed Deluxe and the amp just RIPS! I also have a Supro Super in baby blue tolex that is arriving this week too!

Just received a Panaramic 1210:

It sounds a lot like a Magnatone 213, but with more gain on tap. I've found it to be one of the best amps for my electric mandolin, though the vibrato sounds a lot better on guitar.Exactly like mine . . . a pretty rare bird, made for accordions

Nice amp. Your amp is the Alamo Fury model 2566 was a bass amp made in the early-mid '60s ('62-'65?, definitely before '67)... 5 tubes... Jensen speaker... 20 watts. Original price was around $179.50. That's about all I know.

Not an unusual brand...but a relatively unusual model, the GU-12. With a decent speaker, it's a killer little amp. Electronically, it's like a cross between a Gemini 1 and a Reverbojet

Switched to a ceramic Weber in mine, and it really makes the GU-12 sing!

Americana Branded Magnatone Custom 413 which is pretty much the same as the Magnatone Custom 213 "ToneMaster" used by Phil X on youtube. Mine has no bright switch and doesn't have the 5th "jumper" input that the Tonemaster has but the sound is the same.

It runs on 2 6V6 power tubes a 5y3 in the rectifier 3 12ax7's in the Pre Amp and 1 12au7 I assume for the tremolo (Which is the best feature of this amp!)

It has the original 1960 Date coded Oxford speaker which is still in amazing condition and sounds just as good.

I'm big on old tube PA heads. Got a pile o cabs i mix and match em with.

Bell Pacemaker - PM10 - this is all original right down to the tubes. I just swapped the ampheral mic jack on the front for a 1/4".

Bogen Challenger - again completely original down to the Bogen labelled tubes. This has got some SERIOUS grind to it.

20 Watt Mcgohan - this one is probably my fave of the three... incredible chime and grind in a small little package. LOUD too.

This was picked off of a trailer full of trash that was bound for the dump. It's a 1966 Ward's Airline amp model # GVC 9032-A. It's all original. Tubes, tx's, speaker and even the caps. I had it checked out and cleaned by the local amp guru, who installed a 3 prong plug, a new speaker wire and a couple of vintage knobs and told me "Congratulations, you got a good one." These pics are "before" shots.

Here's the backside of my Silvertone 1433, an amazing sounding amp in a really crappy cabinet. People laugh at it but usually ask if it is for sale after they hear it.

Just picked one of these up. The cost? $185, LOL. I never cease to be amazed by the great sounding amps you can pick up for next to nothing. I'll probably wind up building it a new cab and just store the original.

I used this guy in one of my rock bands for a while. Now it lovingly collects dust. Thinking I'll trade it for something else equally weird.

Hey guys, it's been a long while since I've posted anything here.

Haven't gotten any new gear in some time, but the other day I picked up this old 40s Harmony H195 tube amp. I made up a video today & figured I'd post it here for folks to check it out. Pretty sweet little amp.

lineup is 6v6gt, 6sl7gt, 5y3gt, 6c5gt

original 8" field coil rola has been replaced by a 8" Tesla ARO-666

playing it at half volume for the first half & cranked for that classic 6v6gt growl for the second half
