I just thought you all might be interested in a quick little pre amp shootout.

chandler germanium with sm57 into mod 100.
one take. so its a little sloppy. I am really digging it.

Well they both sound great!

Did you change the EQ at all between the two recordings? How about mic position?

OLD SCHOOL AC/DC. . .the clips rock. . .

My take. . .The first take is more compressed sounding. Big, big sound. Very nice. . .

My goodness. . .Raw. . .Rock n Roll. . .This sounds more open. . .less processed. You had to do something to the first one to make it sound like it did. . .

I just relistened to them again. I really like the first cut. But, it doesn't compare to the second cut. . .The API sounds bigger, more open.

It just goes to show, that one some tracks, maybe the Chandler would do. On others, the API would be better. Kind of like a painter with different brushes.

But it's an apples/oranges thing.
Different song, guitar parts, different overall drum sounds, difficult for me to really compare, probably much easier for you.
I guess the question is can you make either one sound the way you want?

Yeah

The germ is really fat sounding

I did engage the thick switch and ran the pre pretty hot

I feel the api is raw and great for old school rock

I need to get some in line attenuators so that I can run the 512 a little hotter

The damn things are so loud they run the daw into clip really easy
