Man the beginning was pretty sloppy. Saw them play this on Soundstage and even though she had to stop and start again, it was a lot tighter.
STILL rocked though. :)
I have to say I really prefer the simple 70's style of watching a band play than the current MTV flash-cut style nonsense that we see today. Why can't we just watch a band play like this anymore?

That was great. I agree that it is fun watching a band play like this without all the special effects that they add today.

Man, those outfits. Is that Howard Leese looking like a gay Luke Skywalker?
Ann is still a beautiful woman, but when she was young and thin, she was HOT. And what a voice.
When you talk about the great female rock vocalists of all time, it's Janis, Ann and Pat. With an honorable mention to Patty Smyth. And an invitation to Pink to join the short list.

I agree with the sentiment that it's just a pleasure to watch a band play without all the caffeinated jump-cut editing.
Heart is/was just a great band with great songs. It's great to just HEAR a song like that in that context again. Nice harmony guitar work at the end and in Magic Man also posted above.
Great stuff is great stuff.

What a great band Heart was back in the day.

I agree. Great stuff, great band. Roger Fisher was the man. Howard has been associated with Roger's fine playing for too long. Howard is a great musician, but he wrongfully gets credit for all the great guitar work Roger did. All the great licks and riffs while Roger was in the band---that is Roger.
I love that Travis Bean. I had one as well and wish I still did.

I never paid much attention to them, but this thread got me interested. Ann out does Plant in 2002. That's for sure. I guess Zep had better compositional skills, but Heart seems to do the Zep thing as good or better than Zep. If Zep wanted to tour w/o Plant, they could use her :) Holy crap what a set of pipes.

Stop! :D I'll spend all night looking at those videos.
Heart was my first big concert - in the '70s in the Superdome with Ted Nugent, Foghat, and REO Speedwagon.
The Wilson sisters love Led Zeppelin. Just imagine the pipes on the kids if Robert Plant and Ann Wilson had gotten together.

When they 1st hit the scene I wasn't that knocked out but it didn't take too long before I became a fan.
Love their cover of "Battle Of Evermore" as the Lovemongers. I bought a movie soundtrack just for that cut.
You know it wouldn't be a bad idea if Anne and Plant toured with Zepplin and she could hit those high notes Robert can't handle any more. I'd go see that in a flash.

i loved this band through their first two or three albums then i lost interest.... still have immense respect for the Wilson sisters, but mixed feelings on Fisher's guitar work and contributions.
i was watching the clips posted on this thread and that drew me to this clip for one of my favorite studio songs of theirs, "sing, child":

live clip leaves me disappointed tho, as i commented on the clip. Curious as to other people's reaction on the extended guitar segment (3:03 - 7:36)-- is it a sincere tribute or just an embarassing derivative ?

Yes, as the OP said, it'd be end of contest on American Idol, but they wrote this stuff, too! Didn't they? I just wish we had a musical environment today where we could nurture artists like this instead of.... oh, blah blah blah... you all know what I mean.

I once saw them perform in 1975 at a university student lounge in Vancouver, a few months before the release of their first album. During a break I approached them to compliment them on their originals and covers of Yes and Zeppelin songs. They were quite friendly and Steve Fossen, I believe it was, asked if I had any requests so I asked if they could play "Siberian Khatru". The next set they blew me away with the best rendition I have ever heard, other than by the Yes men themselves.

I have exactly the opposite opinion. Roger was a great guitar player, but Howard had a role to play in the band, and did it wonderfully. And he has stood up well on his own, with Heart v.2, Paul Rodgers, etc.

Years ago, I'd say back in '92 or so, I saw Roger Fisher live in Kitchener, Ontario when he was playing with Alias (former members of Heart and Sherriff). At the time, he was playing/pawning his own line of guitars ('Fisher'), and that was what he used for most of the show. Anyway, he had some kind of problem with his guitar, and I guess he didn't have a backup, so in between songs, he switched his guitar with of all guitars, an Ibanez RG750 (the other guitarist in the band was an Ibanez endorsee).
I had front row seats (I was a big Heart fan), so I was able to notice that the trem arm was pointing in the opposite direction as the neck and being held down by the guitar cable that ran up from the guitar jack, through the space between the guitar body and the strap. The 'brilliant' roadie tuned the guitar without noticing that the trem arm was positioned this way - in his defense, the place was dark. So, I kept my eyes locked on that guitar during that one song, just waiting for the cable to shift, and to see Roger's reaction. Sure enough, about 1/2 way through the song, the trem arm popped out from under the cable, and out of tune the guitar went. The look on Roger's face was worth a million bucks! I was sure he was gonna smash that Ibenhad into a million pieces.
And now for your viewing pleasure, Heart, featuring a thin(ner) Ann Wilson:

Have you ever seen him smash his guitar on stage at the (I think) last show he ever did with Heart? It was on their Behind The Music, he was really really pissed off about something. Said a word or two to the crowd and smashed it center stage. It sounded like hitting the top of a Fender amp with the reverb full on. I'm surprised this isn't on Youtube.

well, according to Ann and Nancy in "Behind the Music".....Nancy had just broken up with him around this time and he was pissed. as the show started his guitar wouldn't stay in tune so he smashed it and walked off. he continued his rampage backstage , and the sisters voted him out of the band.

They're just a shell of their former selves now. I saw them last Fall when they opened for Journey - I felt ripped off. It was the 6th and probably last time I'll see them live. They spent more time giving each other kudos at the end of the show than anything else. Nancy was playing lead on Barracuda, and kept screwing up - that really bummed me out. Plus, no flange on Barracuda!!!

Actually, I don't think they achieved their greatest success until a few years later. Weren't 'Private Audition' and 'Passionworks' commercial flops? IMHO I think those are 2 of their better albums artisically, but did anyone really buy them? It wasn't until they loaded themselves up with hired guns did they achieve their greatest success.

Yes, both of those were flops. Private Audition was the last to feature original drummer Mike Derosier and original bassist Steve Fossen. It did have one very cool song, "City's Burning": http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UNvWpqEVUN8
Passionworks was the first with drummer Denny Carmassi and bassist Mark Andes. It was a total flop but it did have one good tune, How Can I Refuse: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-9L0MH4SunQ
This is the lineup that really took off with their next album, the multi-mega-gobzillion selling self-titled album. But the magic was completely gone, it wasn't the same at all IMO.

As I alluded to before, I really like Private Audition. There are some beautiful ballads on there.
Pasionworks has some decent writing on it as well. You could see they were laying out the groundwork for their future commercialization on that album. It has a very 'produced' sound to it. When I first saw them (Bad Animals Tour), they actually did 'Sleep Alone' off that album - poor man's Barracuda. It was cool!
