View Full Version : Sound affected by OT taps?

Pardon me if this is a dumb question.

I noticed the other day that the speakers in my peavey classic 50 were plugged into the wrong jack (the 8 ohm jack) so I moved the speaker plug to the correct 16 ohm jack (the amp uses two 8 ohm speakers wired in series) and now it sounds like there is a blanket over the amp.

Does changing to a different tap cause the sound to change? Did I have all my tone controls set for the sound of the 8 ohm tap and now that Im on the 16 ohm tap I need to readjust my dials?

Or am I just insane and imagining this?

Thanks,
Brian...

You are definately not imagining it. A mismatch will change the sound. Ive noticed this more on my PV's than other amps but it will happen with any amp. Bob

but wait!

does this mean that if I ever hook up a 16 ohm extension cab (the peavey automatically switches to the 8 ohm tap when both output jacks are being used) does this mean that my sound will again change dramatically?

If so that sucks! Or was it the impedence MISMATCH that created the strange sound? rather than simple being a different tap...

A mismatch will change the sound.

well, thats what I get for not reading carefully. Thanks, Bob!
