I have a BF super reverb that doesnt get much use due to its size.
I have a couple of the original cts alnico's going out on me . One had to be reconed recently.
I want to just get new speakers and put the originals away.
What is recommended that isnt $100 per speaker x's 4!
I like eminence but they have a lot of choices. I dont want to lose the fender tone which is why I bought the amp .
Right now there is a little too much trash in the soundwhen distortion is added- I suspect its because of the low wattage speakers. I dont what to lose the fender super reverb thing though.
Recommedations? I might keep the reconed one in there and one of the originals that is still good and just get 2 for now.
I use a zenkudo and dumkudo primarily for OD. So ina nutshell I want to keep my perfect fender clean tone and use those pedals for sounds ala jimmy herring and scott henderson.
I do have the perfect amp for that but this super may get incorperated into that rig and have to cover many duties.
Thanks

I would get a set of eminence Rajin' Cajun's.They have a larger voice coil and should handle the distortion better.
Or the Jensen Mod series has 10" speakers that are cheaper and sound great. They also have bigger voice coils to handle more distortion and bottom end.

My silverface 69 Super has alnicos like yours in it and sounds delightful to me. But I'm also a fan of the Jensen C10Q. I have three cabs with a pair of these in 'em and really love the classic sound they put out, particularly with the pair of bf Tremolux's I use in my studio. The pair handles the 35-40 watts that the trems put out, so I think 4 would be fine with at super. I have used them with more powerful amps and they will bottom out (esp bass) at high volumes.

I love Ragin' Cajuns. Put 'em in my Concert and haven't looked back.

Thanks for the suggestions.
My friend has a super reverb and he put 2 ragin cajuns in and 2 legend 1058's.
He brought it over and we tried both amps thru both cabs.
We both agreed that my stock cts's sound better and out of the 2 in his super we both liked the legends better! I didn't expect that.
I'd just leave it alone but at gig volume I am getting speaker buzzes and rattles that is driving me nuts. They aren't blown but I think they have something loose.
I have been researching this and I am getting a lot of guys telling me to get 2 copperheads and 2 ramrods.
Its hard to tell from the clips on emi's site because they are mp3's and coming over my cheap computer speakers.
Im thinking about keeping the reconed CTS alnico and the best of the other 3 CTS's in the amp and just get 2 replacements. Then I'd still have some backups
I read Jimmy herring uses tone tubby's in his super. Sounds great but Im not paying $1000 for 4 speakers.
Maybe I should get 2 emi lil buddy's? Those are supposedly made with the exact cone that Tone Tubby uses. I love the C- Rex I have in my pro reverb and it has the same weed cone. I read that they get teh cones of the C-rex and the lil buddy from a broun soun..
I have read that 2 copperheads and 2 ramrods are great to as well as 2 ramrods and 2 lil buddies.
Or I could get the new CTS copy Weber makes. $50 for ceramic and $100 for alnico.
My last point is that I love the classic fender clean sound with the stock speakers and the sound I get when I crank it up however when I use any of my OD pedals it still sounds good but it has more of a ragged sound that I think is because of those 10"s breaking up.
I wonder if there are speakers that will give me the smooth sound sililar to what I get out of my pro reverb with emi red, white and blue and C-rex yet still keep the incredible fender clean and crunch? My pro reverb still has plenty of calssic fender clean with those speakers and I think I lucked on to a good combo. I'm afraid that if I get a speaker that works well for liquid legato overdrive then my fender spank may get killed.
I'd rather just go for classic CTS alnico tone if there is no way to attain both. In that case I'll just get 2 of those new weber ceramics and be out for $100.
This is complicated!!! Darn!

It is complicated!! I currently have Emi Legends - 2 1028 Alinico and 2 1058 ceramic.. It's a pretty nice combo.. Solid Fender sparkle with good overdrive too.. and the cost is not bad (about $50 per speaker). But honestly I've recently been trolling ebay for trashed CTS Alnicos in hopes of finding a set that I can recone.. (so keep me in mind if you decide to sell yours!!)..
Weber has a HUGE variety of 10's to consider.. in fact I have 4 Weber CTS ceramic clones sitting waiting for a cab to put them in (I learned this week that Avatar no longer makes their 4x10).. Weber has recently come out with a clone of the CTS Alnico that uses many of the same components of the original... but alas, it's $100 a pop.. and that's a bit too rich for my blood.. I have not seen a review of these speakers yet as they came out very recently.
I tried the Ragin Cajun and wanted to like it... but it just didn't sound "Fendery" enough for me.
As you say.... complicated...

Hey Sidehatch,
We seem to have many of the same tastes tonally , I would HIGHLY recommend contacting Lance from Guitar 25 to check out the Austin Speaker Works stuff ....It is simply THE BEST I have heard in 20+ years of playing, plus he has a demo thing going on now where you can check them out FOR FREE ...Expensive BUT WORTH IT !!! Thanks Dave P.

They are $41 a piece. Less than webers cheapo line.
Im tempted.

Ted's Sig 10's are $40 alnico & $30 ceramic.
The CVC10 ceramics are getting rave reviews in Supers. Also $40.

For the money, the emi legend 105's are a really good speaker for that amp. I like GearHeadFred's idea of two 105's and two 102's.

I have one cts alnico from a 66 super reverb that needs a recone . I got it froma friend to ahve it reconed and have an extra for the amp but never did.
If you could use one email me.

I would also suggest Jensen. The vintage series sounds very good and the prices are around fifty bucks a speaker. They tend to be bright and there is a great deal of variation from one model to another, or from one power rating to another in the same size and type (such as from C10R to C10Q, for example).

If it were my amp I would go with a set of alnico Eminence 102K's. I like Supers with alnico's that get some compression when pushed yet retain good note separation.

I love alnico's. Thats why I haven't bought anything yet. I'll check out those 102k's. Maybe 2 of those and 2 wgs's.

Maybe not the most well known..but: I found the Revern Altone 10-25s and the 10-30's to be awesome! I actually had a quad of each. The 30s (as in 30 watts) are tighter in the bottom end. The 25's are a little looser in the bottom. Both are sweet as hell in the top end. I ended up using the 10-25's in my SuperReverb. I like a little fuller bottom end in the amp. Its not mushy, but certainly full. I've tried a lot of 10" speakers and these are the only ones I kept. For the record, they are not nearly as bright on top as the Altone 12-50's. Those can be bright and harsh in some amps. These are not like that at all.
Before that I had a set of Alinco Mojo Tones. Everyone raved about them, but once I loaded the super reverb with the Ceramic Altone's I sold all the mojos'.

I have 4 of the WGS's in my 66 Super and the sound great, but unless they have changed the design they only have 4 mounting holes where your amp will have 8 mounting posts.

I have 4 Reverend Alltones in my 1965 Super reverb...I'm amazed how good they sound, I can't imagine putting another speaker in it.

Have you un-mounted yoru existing speakers yet? Maybe you should.
I had a similar problem years back with my SR. Turns out that on one of the speakers, the dustcap had fallen off. The glue dried out and the vibration knocked if off. It was caught ever so slightly between the baffle and the edge of the cone, and at gig volume it vibrated against the cone like a kazoo.
Rattles, vibrations, you name it........take it apart, clean everything & put it all back together nice & snug. Sometimes that's all it takes.
