View Full Version : Your clothes on stage.

Wasn't sure of exactly where to put this topic, but I put it here. What type of clothes do you were for playing shows? Do you dress a certain way when your off/on stage? Do you "dress up" abit? Don't go out here saying something like "the music sounds the same, no matter what I wear", because your clothes style drastically impacts your performance and stage pressence which IMO is the main factor of a good live show. Please post pics of your style of clothes you'd wear when performing or describe it to other artists.

I always appreciate when it doesn't look like the band just stepped out of the crowd.
My stage attire is jeans and a t-shirt, and my everyday attire is a white satin Jimmy Page dragon suit.
But I find it tough with guys clothes, seems to be only shirts and t-shirts.
Even though I play rock, I like the cowboy shirts out there, they're not your everyday shirt.

Mostly jeans and a cool tshirt (Ramones, Speed Racer, etc), but I also sometimes wear a peasant shirt that came with a halloween costume; it's got these loose, billowy sleeves that look really cool and it is uber comfortable

You have to put some thought into your stage wear. Your band has to draw attention so like it or not your stage clothes make a difference. YMMV

I have different looks for different gigs, but I always try to have a look of some kind. I avoid the everyman jeans and T look.
Sometimes I suit up
Sometimes it's dress pants and a button down shirt
Sometimes it's funky jeans with funky button-down shirt
I often wear hats/vests/ties. Always dress shoes, sometimes cowboy boots.
I'm not over the top with the apparel, but I try to make a visual statement.

If the band/music is good, makes no difference, as long as the attire is clean. Are there for fashion or music? Having said that, sweatpants, shortpants, and torn or ripped shirts are a no no.

I personally try to suscribe to the thought that the band should look better than the crowd. Dress like you're there to pick up a date!
Now that doesn't always mean dressing nice but it does mean thinking about what clothing goes with your band and what image you want to put out. Plus a band has the advantage of having several members so the audience gets that look in numbers to reinforce the band's image.

I dress appropriately for the gig. If it's a wedding I wear a tux. If it's a private affair, a suit and tie. If it's a beach gig in the summer, shorts and a T shirt. If it's a rock club, jeans, black Tshirt and an open silk shirt over it.

I used to get crap all the time for what I wore. I am a pretty preppy guy and (formerly) playing in a band that does some heavier music doesn't go well with slacks. So, I would usually wear jeans and a t-shirt. However, for some of our bigger shows, we were able to compromise.

My band is a powerpop original band... we do dress up.... black pants, button up shirt and a tie..... all in shades of black and gray, except the tie.. we wear brighter colored ties... nobody matches.. but we look like we belong together....
I generally go with some type of black shirt.. usually with the sleeves slightly rolled up... bright colored tie.. and a charcoalish sweater vest..oh yeah!
I won't lie.. the ladies in the crowd love the style and it tends to match our band name.. the favorites... and our musical style. It wouldn't mean much if we went up there and forgot to rock though.

Matching outfits? Hell No!!! But if i see a band live, I expect them to look cool. Some guys can pull it off with minimal fuss, but the best thing a musician can do for his image live, is BE IN SHAPE. If you are a big, overweight, sweathog, I don't care what you're wearing, i probably ain't buying it.

Fugazi. Ahh the good ol' days. Mid 90's I was in an orig/cover band we would play Fugazi, Pixies...ect..the lead singer/bass player/crowd antagonizing trouble maker.. would shave all his body hair (eye brows included) and wear a full length sun dress. He got sooo many chics..no kidding. So.. I guess it doesn't matter? So..if someone plays theyre ass off it doesnt matter what they wear. Or..creating a spectacle..or what people may consider entertainment...and if people are entertained? Doesnt really matter..just give me my money, so I can stop at the Taco Bell after the gig. Anyhow...It opens a different discussion. sorry . didnt mean to de-rail the thread.

Interesting topic; our lead singer (female) has been sending out assorted pics for us guys to view, as she's very fashion conscious. I agree that a band needs to set themselves apart from the audience and look like a band. In a previous band, one of the members, who was somewhat on the large side, on occasion would show up for a gig with a Red Sox hat and a large Mickey Mouse tee shirt on.....man, I hated that.

What absolutely KILLS any chance of looking cool or anything that resembles cool is a guitarist or vocalist wearing shorts...........unless their legs are "cut"/well defined. Or, your are a girl with nice legs :). Way too many performers get up there and show off their scrawney "big bird" legs and no matter how cool it is to wear shorts (comfort-wise), they make ugly legs totally visible.
Kills me. Wanna be/look cool? Just gotta be and play the part. Be cool. Look cool. Act cool. Any inconsistency.........well, you're blown out of the water so to speak.

I think the band should be dressed appropiately and somewhat BETTER than the folks they're playing for. That applies whether I'm playing bluegrass, country & western, jazz, or rock. And I have clothes for all these. On the street? I wear whatever I like and is appropriate. As I am a corporate slave, that's often business attire.

I'm guessing you've never played an outdoor gig in Alabama in July... If you DON'T wear shorts you can pretty much expect to collapse before the gig is over... couple years ago we did an evening gig, a high school reunion, we played from 7:30- 10:30... it was over 90 degrees at 10 oclock! Well obviously it really does depend on the style of music and the venue. You're not going to wear a cowboy shirt to a heavy metal gig (or you could...) or a sex pistols T shirt at the Grand Ole Opry.
When I played in a rockabilly band standard dress was jeans, bowling shirts and brothel creepers. Then when I played in a noisy, swampy original band it was a cowboy shirt, jeans and, well, brothel creepers. Um, they're the only nice shoes I have right now...
I agree totally about no sandals or socks, and I also agree to never play in Alabama! But it gets plenty hot where I live in Western Australia. Sometimes you have to sweat for your art.

You can't get people to understand how difficult it is to get cool here in the South East (I'm in NW GA). 95° & 90% humidity makes it damn hard for sweat to evaporate & take heat away. I was more comfortable hiking the Grand Canyon at about 100° with basically no humidity to speak of.
If I see somebody in shorts here in the summer there's NO way in hell I'd criticize them for that.

I've played outdoor gigs in NC summers where it was 95+ degrees and 90% humidity...maybe that's not quite as bad as Alabama, but it's still incredibly hot for jeans. But I never wore shorts or sandles. I just refuse to wear them personally. Yes, it was extremely uncomfortable. Yes, I was soaked through with sweat at the end and had to drink water constantly. Yes, maybe I'm stupid. ;) But I just can't wear shorts when I'm playing guitar. It just looks too dorky IMO for me to feel cool and sometimes you've got to suffer for fashion.
I live in my jeans so I usually wear them when gigging. If it's hot I'll wear a t-shirt (usually a plain black v-neck or something similar but it depends on my mood). If it's not too hot I'll wear a western style shirt or some other cool looking button up. Sometimes I'll wear a track jacket or a sweater if I'm cold. Shoes are sneakers (currently on a retro Asics kick) or Ariat Roper boots if I'm feeling a lil' bit country.

You should put some thought into your attire...if you show up in your dirty work clothes you look like you just don't care what your audience thinks....If you think "it's only the music that matters" you are fooling yourself as the audience is not "musician based". They want to be entertained. That means sight as well as sound. It's part of the package......

Regular clothes? For who? He's wearing some leather custom pants, leather combat boots with chains, a leather top hat with metal accents, sunglasses, and lots of bracelets, rings and junk. Oh and he's wearing a regular flannel shirt. He does look cool but it's not because he's dressed like a regular guy and rocks. He's accessorized and rocked out.
The thing about Slash is that he has a LOOK. It's instantly recognizable, so distinctive that you could almost draw a cartoon of it. That's a good thing for rockers... heck, for anyone in the public eye.
The leader of a band I'm in has that look thing down too. Onstage, and usually offstage, she's always wearing a beret, black t-shirt, and camo fatigue pants. Makes her instantly recognizable onstage, and fits the whole nerd-cool thing the band does.
Personally, I dress the same onstage as off... jeans, flannel over an amusing/symbolic t-shirt, flannel open so you can see the T. I take some care choosing the t-shirt for gigs, so it's something that can hopefully be read from the audience, even with a guitar in the way. (obpolitical - for much of last year I was wearing the same very cool Obama shirt at every gig) I also like wearing shirts from bands I like, especially my friends' bands. Last week at a gig, I did just that - luckily, they have a very distinctive logo with an easy to read band name at top.

I agree with dressing up a bit. But there are no rules to rock. So there are no rules to rock clothing. I understand if people have a problem with wearing shorts, well fine don't come to my gigs, but it seems pretty shallow to be judging a musician based on their looks/clothes. I understand this kind of mentality comes from the crowd too, but I figured musicians would respect each other's artistic (or lack their of) expression.

Its funny that a lot of people think its cool to "just not care" when 90% of everybody just doesn't care, THIS IS THE PROBLEM. You may think you look cool when you put no effort into your style but you just look like all the other 90% of the people. So yeah hawaiin shirts, socks with sandles, etc; are not as 'cool' as one might think. Ask any dude who dresses like a slob, which is 90% of all dudes and they will say the same thing, "I don't care about how I look because I'm cool, I don't have to try to look cool thats lame"

I typically wear a long sleeve black button up, with the sleeves rolled up. That, and a pair of faded jeans is appropriate for any gig. Shows a classy nature, and is still okay to do just about anywhere playing rock, or metal. In my opinion, it helps people to take the bands more seriously when it's still casual enough to be acceptable, but classy enough for people to take notice.
For Jazz and wedding gigs, I tend to dress up in a tux.

Care enough to respect the audience for paying to see you....
And be self aware enough to know how your body shape looks in certain clothes. Dudes wearing muscle tee's with beer guts is just unpleasant.
It also should be appropriate for the genre and gig house you are playing. A small club that is known for the coffeehouse crowd will not relate to elaborate outfits, themes etc, thus you will put distance between you and the audience, so then what is the point. If you are not there to enage your audience, go home and stay in the garage.

They get world-class designers to come up with lines. It's no less cookie cutter than wearing Old Navy or Hugo Boss...
We all wear shirts and pants, typically made from cotton or wool – tubes for our arms, tubes for our legs, tubes for our torsos. The variation is never going to be completely earth shattering.
Who's not "cookie cutter"?
Catoogie, I do agree that the quality isn't always great... I've had some things fall apart, but I've found other things that are actually well made. You can find jems, just like anywhere else. I'm in a pretty heavy band, but for me it's usually a golf shirt. A nice golf shirt. Piqued cotton, Lacoste, benny sherman, Fred P....etc. etc. etc. Plain colour and jeans. Shoes are generally some sort of an adidas runner.
I tried an experiment where I would wear really nice sweaters to a gig.
Worst...Idea....ever.....
I just kept at it but it was terrible. You get hot, sweater gets sweaty and saggy. Dumb, dumb, dumb.

It's all about what you are able to find. Do you have an eye for cut? For colour? Can you accessorize. Are you able to dress for your body? Are you aware of what statement you're making? Blah blah blah.
It is now biznatch!
:BEER
Jokes.
ehh, if you dig it that's all that matters.
Old Navy is one thing... I'd say they are very much in the cookie cutter mold. Perhaps the Peavey/Behringer of clothing?? Mostly knockoffs/amalgamations/blandenings of current/semi-current styles.
Hugo Boss sort of does their own thing. They've carved a niche for themselves. A lot of their clothes follow a certain theme. I wouldn't define that as "cookie cutter" any more than I'd say Two-Rock has cookie cutter designs for their amps.
The point being, most people who are serious about crafting their own styles generally don't wear what the mannequins wear at any store.

I've been thinking over this all morning... and it just doesn't add up to me.
Unless Rodeo Drive and 5th Ave are actually back-alleyways where unmarked boxes of clothes are exchanged for cash, this statement just doesn't stand-up.
Every retail outlet – from underground thrift stores to indie shops to big designer boutiques put outfits on mannequins. Putting clothing on a mannequin does not somehow infuse the design with "unstylishness" – Armani suits are displayed on mannequins. Does this act strip them of any aesthetic value? Mannequins are how designers display their clothes, just as painters put their works up in galleries. Prima facie, the argument is wrong.
If what you're suggesting is that buying retail is what the hopelessly lost masses do, this is also untrue. We all have two options for clothing: retail or bespoke. Whether you can have your clothes made to order is a matter of finances, not taste or fashion sense.
Versace, D&G, Kenneth Cloe; these and any other label (including the bleeding edge indie stuff) is all found and purchased through retail locations.
I'm just not sure what your argument is based on, practically or philosophically.
Style, as it relates to fashion, is about two things: cut and colour. Your ability to conscientiously arrange elements in flattering and creative ways is what makes you stylish, not where you get your pieces
FWIW, I'd design my own clothes if I could – I tend to imagine outfits, and am hopelessly frustrated that I can't find what I imagine out in the world. So, I'll buy whatever suits my tastes whenever I'm lucky enough to find something that aligns with my "vision," whether it be Target, H&M, or a Diesel boutique. You just have to work on a "piece by piece" basis.

I've always found that it's not as much about what you wear, but how you wear it. If you walk into a club with rock star attitude coming out of every pore in your body, everybody's going to know you're in the band regardless of what you're wearing. That being said, you should probably make some effort to dress appropriately for the gig, depending on what that gig is.
Anybody who says that it doesn't matter what kind of music you play, you should always/never wear _______, is full of it and unable to look beyond their narrow view of the music business. It's all about the image you want to convey to the crowd. If you're trying to convey that "everyman" image, than jeans and a t-shirt work just fine. Use some common sense and just make whatever image you like work for your band. Your audience is likely paying to see you play, so the least you can do is try and look a little interesting.
Of course as far as wedding band players go, we know you dress in monkey suits, why do you bother posting in these threads? We don't feel sorry for you.
And I guess when it comes to your average cover band, you don't HAVE to do anything special. I'm just not sure why you wouldn't want to.

What I meant was that if you care about your own style you won't wear exactly what you see on a mannequin. I.e. pre-packaged "outfits."
and I don't know how much water the armani example holds. Suits are by definition a little more generic than regular clothes. Anybody hear the seinfeld bit about why men wear suits??.

I met James Apollo (http://www.aquariumrecords.com/jamesapollo.htm) a few yrs ago and he said to me, in his cool guy way, "Dave, when you walk into a venue, everyone should know that you're the guy performing that night." James is a great showman!
Sometimes it depends on where I'm performing but for the most part I wear all black. There are many different reasons for it but aside from the thought that went into the meaning, it is easy to put together. If not in black, its usually jeans, no shoes, and a decent button up/v neck t-shirt.

OK, three quick points on a very personal subject...
1. dress however you want...it's a free country (-ies). I'd personally avoid any kind of jean shorts, but that's just me.
2. but, if you want to turn it up a notch
- velvet jacket
- button up shirt, ideally with a wide collar or a frilly wedding shirt
- mardi gras beads
- chicks will think you're a pimp, or at least a well-heeled hombre
3. most importantly, always wear a mean pair of leather boots OR chuckie Ts...that's it...no tevas, no tennis shoes, no hiking boots, etc. OK, wait, it's a free country...
PS. It's really about the guitar isn't it?

As odd as it sounds, I play better when I feel like I dressed well for the occasion. Like all of these people are here to see me, so I better step up and deliver. And 99% of the time I play like Prince, John McLaughlin, Eric Johnson, and Pat Martino are in the audience, and I wanna make them proud. 1. boring

For general gigs, usually a nice pair of jeans (blue or black), a black t-shirt, maybe a lightweight black shirt, nothing too dressy. I sweat too much, need to be loose (no suits, no jackets, no ties). No hats for the same reason. They may look cool, they get ruined, and that's not "me" onstage.
If it's a suit or a jacket or a tie, I'm sitting down, probably reading down a chart, so DON'T expect me to jump around, not there for that.
Summer? Maybe chinos, no linen pants ('cause afterwards, I'd have to buy NEW linen pants).
I never look sloppy. After over 30 years, I know what works for me and what doesn't. Now a gorilla suit? We can maybe talk about that.

"my clothes on stage"......pretty much means I'm standing there naked..
and that can't be good for anyone..
I don't go overboard, but have picked up clothes that I just wouldn't wear otherwise, with the thought of using it for gigs.
I think is it nice to make it a little more special, but I don't mind either, if I hear a group like Govt Mule, and they all are dressed like they are going to the laundrymat...couldn't care less.
I guess...if the talent is in THAT league it makes less difference too.
Most bands aren't in that league though. When I was a kid, it helped a lot to have stage dress..

For the disco band, the singer/leader likes us to wear black...I usually just dress nice. The thing she does which is really ghey is she bought hats and sunglasses so when we play Peter Gunn she wants us to wear them like the Blues Brothers. It's really lame.
For the Country band, clothes are usually mandatory.

Hipsters: the "ironic" tees are played. Waaay played.

Screw the costumey crap. These guys have better stage presence than any other band I've seen.

Best quote of the thread...and I haven't even finished reading it yet.
Is that some of that "emo" all the kids are raving about?
Uggghh...no. Just no. Here go read (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fugazi).
In my current setting an incredibly grubby, look with dark clothes. Similar to this.

H&M sells Mall clothes. Why not just shop at Hot Topic, that's about as cool as H&M. AND the quality sucks.
Is uncoolness a word?
I'll tell you how cool I am...I had never heard of H&M! I had to look them up to know what everyone was talking about. When I checked their store locator, I saw that they had a few stores in Atlanta, and nowhere else in the southeast. No wonder I never heard of them. Besides, I'm 53 years old...I think it's pretty sad when a middle aged guy tries to look like a teenager. I want to look cool, but age appropriate.

sunglasses are bad too, but permissible if you are a washed out 70s or 80s rocker
Or if you are a hard drinking fellow who is trying to hide from the bright stage lights. But you'd really have to pull that off with an overall stench and completely unkempt look.

Our band plays 3-4 different types of shows...as an original band, a cover band, a tribute band, a dixieland band, a jazz quintet, and we back up a burlesque show.
So we could be playing a smokey bar, and private party, fundraiser, or a theater. Which means I could be wearing anything from jeans and a shirt to a tux.

Depends on the gig.
For Clubs, Festivals, Showcases etc...I wear Stretch F'ing Jeans from Lip Service. Some lace up the sides like in the pic and some dont. Either way they are boot cut at the bottom and I always wear Snakeskin boots.

I get em at Lip Service or Too Fast Online.
For Shirts I usually wear Ely's long sleeves in black or I wear The Dickies Workwear button up shirts from WalMart in short sleeve.
I also have several of the Fender dress shirts and other dress shirts and T shirts.
They all go in a road case.
For this weekends gig which is on the beach and playing outside. Black shorts and the black Dickies Workwear short sleeve. Ill be wearing reeboks too.
Im not gonna stroke out for fashion.
Naked. No guitar strap - just a square patch of velcro on the back trem cover. I hate parting with my guitar after the gig, though.

I believe in stage appropriate dress. That's why, when I'm playing Dead, I'm careful to wear a t-shirt and jeans.

I wonder what Picasso wore when he had an art exhibit? Did Thoreau have a good tailor? Einstein was a huge celebrity and no fashion plate as I recall. Art or entertainment? Hmmm...
Both.
Regardless of however much you wish to frame your music as "art," when you're playing for anyone (or attempting to play for anyone) it's "entertainment."

the best thing a musician can do for his image live, is BE IN SHAPE. If you are a big, overweight, sweathog, I don't care what you're wearing, i probably ain't buying it.
Man, this is about as shallow and narrow minded as anything I have read here. What I get from this is that if a musician is overweight then you will not buy it. Even if the musician is outrageously great you will allow something like being overweight be a factor that will keep you from liking a show or the music. John Popper comes to mind. I preferred when he was larger.
I can't believe this was actually put in print. WOW. To each their own.

Totally agree with you....sheesh.
I guess then he ain't "buying" BB King, Warren Haynes, Freddie King, Popa chubby, etc. etc. etc.
I wonder, does he also have a underweight limit? Skinny, beanpole musicians should also just go away?
Does this apply opposite? Like, "I ain't buying athletes that don't know how to play an instrument"...
Just blew me away that line.

i think at my next gig, I'm gonna do the Ari Gold from Entourage. Vest, dress shirt, pimp tie, some nice slacks. Roll the sleeves up and get down. Yeah, I think that would be fun...
Otherwise, it's jeans and a well fitting/comfortable tshirt. Every now and then a buttonup is over the shirt. Some comfy shoes always help (of course they gotta look the part).
