could it be the speaker??

as you can imagine im a bit past taking it to someone to be fixed...

Long shot...

Replace plate resistors of pre-amp and phase inverter...
Abt 2$ material cost...

Had one of these on the bench few months ago: it would go back and forth between a loud crackle and howling wind noises. Fix: a solder joint on V1 sub-board never took solder, the wire to the grid was just sitting in it. Found it easily with chopstick.

+1 on what ar-305 said. i bet that's exactly what the problem is. cold solder joint somewhere that was fine but got disrupted during the repair.

don't sweat it - this is a pretty simple thing and pretty common too. Just remember that some of these projects *can* turn out to be a bit progressive. The good news is that that joint was going to fail at some point and you've just saved yourself a bunch of headache down the road.

What all was "repaired" on it?

I had a Weber speaker that was miss labeled. It was either a 25 watter or a 50 watter....actually it was marked both. Err on Weber's part.

I built the amp (BA70) and installed the speaker. The amp sounded great with the speaker but when I dimed it out full blast (I test my amps at max before shipping), it crackled big time! Yep! It was a 25 watt speaker in a 50 watt amp.

So, I installed a 50 watt speaker and no more crackle.

If you didn't have the speaker changed out but had a stronger OT installed, perhaps the voice coil cannot handle the output power of the new OT?

Perhaps its biased incorrectly?

First thing is first, take it back to the repair shop and have them test it. This of course should be for free...
