Hello,

I have a Fargen Mini Plex MKII and a 1 x 12 cabinet. The Fargen has 4, 8, and 16 ohm outputs. I'm currently running an 8 ohm speaker but I have a chance to pick up a 16 ohm 12-65 Celestion Hertitage at a really good price.

The question is, are there any advantages or disadvantages to using a 16 ohm speaker in a 1 x 12 versus an 8 ohm? I'm trying to decide if I should buy the 16 ohm speaker at the good price or go ahead and spring for an 8 ohm version of the same speaker.

Thanks,

Rick

There are some claims that if you use the 16 ohm tap, you are using the whole secondary winding of the output transformer and that it sounds superior to the other taps.
True, not sure but it sure won't hurt anything.

Would there be any difference in the loudness compared to an 8 ohm speaker plugged into the 8 ohm tap?

This was my understanding as well. I use both 8 and 16 ohm speakers and I can't say I have noticed any difference sonically, though. If anything, the word seems to be that it's going to improve your setup and not the other way around.
