I've listened to a ton of Huff's band Giant the last week or so, and checked out the Youbube footage of his "studio" instructional stuff and I was reminded again of just what a freakin' monster player this guy is. Chops to burn, and remarkably melodic when he wants. Plus, he sings well and writes great melodic rock tunes.

Any love today for Dann the Man?!

Oh ya... what a monster. I loved Giant back in the day... maybe it's time to pull those discs out again. Has he done any rock outside of Giant?

Check out his solo on Warren Hill's "tell me all your secrets".
One of my favourite solos of all time.
**Warning** this is a smooth jazz tune, but his solo @ 2:07 is uber tasty bluesy ala Carlton/Verheyen.

Is he the same Dan Huff you produced Martina McBride's latest album?

And yes, he's a monster player.

Sadly it doesn't seem like he plays much rock anymore. :o

I saw Giant live back in the day, Dann was killer.

My pleasure....and for those who dug him back in the day Giant released both a "Live and Acoustic" disc as well as new material on Giant III a few years back.

I want to get ahold of that vhs tape he did years ago. I need to get google fired up and locate it. There must be some old copies floating around somewhere.

It rocks, no change of musical direction. Melodic rock at it's best!

I used to copy Dan Huff a lot... (I wanted to be studio guy....)

Great versatile player.

Playing the Huff model at Jim's shop left me with a permanent case of GAS for Tyler Guitars. :AOK

Hi Tomo-san!!

I still have the first two Giant records. The lyrics are pretty laughable — boy loves girl, boy burns for girl, boy tries to fight off raging passion (pretty sure Huff is a born-again Christian), but the guitars are smokin'.

Martina McBride wild Angels along with alot of Faith Hill
Alot of Keith Urban stuff too
I seem to think most of the stuff coming out of Nashville is Dann if it is on a Strat, and Brent if it is a Tele or semi Hollow body, Baritone, etc.
Real good tonefull stuff, and very melodic.
Another give away with Dann is his use of doubling and panning varried guitar parts to left and right. Again, check out Wild Angels, it is a great example.

I've been a huge Huff fan ever since I heard Giant's first album Last Of The Runaways in the late 80s.

I pretty much wore that disc out and also Time To Burn. IMO some of the finest melodic rock to come out of that era. Truly phenomenal rock guitar playing. Dann was on fire throughout both those albums.

Interesting fact: Dann stated in some guitar mag interview that he was a huge Buzz Feiten fan, and derived a great deal of his core style from Buzz.

When Dann Huff gets mentioned, I always think of the alleged story of him re-recording Dave Mustaine's guitar parts on the masters for Megadeth's "Risk" album without Mustaine's knowledge or consent.

That's a big accusation to make. I'd be interested to hear Dann's take on that.

I first learned of Dan Huff from DC Talk's "Jesus Freak" album. He plays on four or five of the songs, and the whole album is smokin'! Some of the best guitar work of any album I own.

Also listed in the credits is David Huff - drums, and Ronn Huff - string arranger and conductor. Are they all related?

David Huff is his younger brother...I'm guessing Ron is his dad.

Huff said in an interview that regardless of what has been said, he didn't play a single note on the album. Yet Mustaine says otherwise, so someone is obviously wrong.

Huff's awesome though. Love his Giant work. I remember first hearing of him in the first 2tek adverts.

Huge fan of Dann's since the early 1980's. I first learned of him when he and his brother David were in a Christian rock band called White Heart. Not too bad, though musically it didn't hold a candle to Dann's work on the Giant albums. Amazing player, great producer, seems like a humble and likable guy.

Way way before I ever thought of picking up the guitar - when I was 7! - always loved the solo in 'Highway to the Danger Zone'. I found out years later it was Dan.

When he's got his tasteful head on he's one of the best guitarists around.
There's a bit in that instructional DVD where he plays this laid back rnb type groove then does some very nice tasteful stuff on top.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e-9oM6_TWms&feature=PlayList&p=91DAEE9FAFBFB231&playnext=1&playnext_from=PL&index=15
I could listen to this stuff all day long.

At the other end of the scale when he does the full on ripping solo's there's few up there.
Great player.

I've got a good quality Giant Live DVD I never watch if someone's interested in it

super talented, super nice guy... lot's of hits coming out of his own home studio there in Nashville and Blackbird studios (Martina and husbands).
Anybody remember the Paul Reed Smith 'Dan Huff model'? I think it was based on a Custom 24 or something...
