Fatback's version is great. You should also check out Shane Theriot's version.

One of the most common melodies quoted on gigs by smart-ass, no-playing musicians who think they're being "cute" by doing so. Used to be bass players quoting "Barney Miller". They play that intro line, and then look at ya like, "Aren't I just so preciously clever?". If they only knew...

The Popeye theme is another oft quoted melody.

The Popeye theme is another oft quoted melody.
The only person who got it right was Johnny B. Gayden.

I think the " Barney Miller " theme is one of the coolest themes to ever
grace the small screen. Lighten up. ;)

The Sanford and Son theme is cool, I like it.
This version of the Popeye theme is pretty nice too - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xt1OfMzU66Q

Go ahead and politely request that I lighten up; cool or not, after you've heard a coupla hundred bass players noodling on this between songs, during songs, as the centerpiece for their solos, on hundreds of gigs, over the past twenty-some years, and then they they look at you with that "ain't I some hip sh*t" look; one will tend to sour on it just a little. But, hey, don't let my experience inhibit yours!

Didn't Quincy Jones write that?

Yes, Sanford & Son theme is Quincy; that's what makes it so cool!

Quincy did indeed write it. It's called 'Street Sweeper'.

yes he did, with some badass bass form Chuck Rainey. There an extended version of it floating around in cyberspace that has some nice clav and sax jamming. It's funny, when they go back into the main theme, it sounds like it was spliced in, tempo drops a number of clicks in a rather sudden fashion

Just another perspective/experience that came to my mind upon reading this thread. I suggest you block (ignore list, or whatever it is) me before I bring my evil gloom and doom to your next little bliss fest. I wouldn't want you to have to encounter any sort of subversive, open exchange of ideas, or any other sort of democratic principles.

I posted this because I liked the guys spirit. Seemed like a cool song. I always loved the intro back in the 70s when I watched S and S. I love Quincy Jones. Hikky-Burr anyone?

Steet Beater actually... but close.
Hikky-Burr anyone?
That was on his Smackwater Jack LP along with The Anderson Tapes and Ironside. . I had a few of Q's records as a kid and dug them. Anyone ever heard the soundtrack LP for the movie "Money" that he did with Little Richard?

I think Fatback was the one that turned me on to Shane Theriot's version. Give it a listen if you get a chance. I downloaded it off iTunes.
