Was there a method to the madness or did they just slap pedals on stage and hook em up? I'd especially like to know what his chain was when he had wah, fuzz, octavia and vibe all going at the same time.

What about in the studio? I can't seem to find many pics that show stuff all laid out in the studio...or on stage for that matter. I think I may have seen some BOG and Woodstock pics...

I have read that in the studio some effects were added at the board rather than with amps.
When you listen to live Jimi recordings, sometimes one hears a reverb-like (maybe it was reverb, I don't know) ambience that sweetens up the tone and which was added at the board.
I don't know the order of effects as I've seen contradictory info on this.

Woodstock was wah, fuzz, Univibe, amp
BOG was wah, Octavia, fuzz, Univibe, amp

He only used the Octavia at the BOG shows and a few select shows during 1970

I messed around a bit with this today. I think BOG may have been octavia before wah. I tried it the other way and it was totally unuseable! Could just be my rig? When I went Octavia before wah, I was able to get the sounds...

While I'm with you guys, in that you want to know what he used, in which order...and keeping in mind some things were added on the board, one point sticks out for me after experimenting and trying different things.

I find that with many of todays vibes, it sounds more authentically like Hendrix most often with vibe right after wah, then either octave->fuzz or vice versa.

I find that a lot. Replicating just Jimi's pedal order often ends up with a vibe sound that is WAY thinner than his recorded (live) sound.
I'm thinking...what's different? Well for one concrete thing, you almost always see Jimi playing a coiled "telephone" cord...which I think is going to darken the sound (so maybe a thin vibe-fuzz sound gets richer and deeper), and on top of that I have heard he often set his amps REALLY high (like pegged) but used guitar volume to clean up, or get the right volume...able to turn up to get feedback anytime..etc. Most of us don't do this...and when he rolled back volume (quite a bit I am guessing) again darken the sound, and then you got Marshall or Sunn amps cranked up...

All of this is just guessing, but since I tend to not crank my amp all the way, have my vol. at like 5 or 6, don't use coiled guitar cords, etc, etc. I instead use my ears to get the pedal order, and with more "normal" settings and better cables, to me vibe almost has to be before fuzz.

Sometimes it sounds like the vibe is before the fuzz and other times after. Different sort of fizzy swirl with the fuzz before and bit warmer with the fuzz after. Both sound cool.

...although this is not absolute, for instance if you take a look at the Isle of Fehmarn concert pics (Sept. 1970) its wah, fuzz, univibe amp (or at least thats how it looks like)... ;)

In my personal experience, I get the best sounds going Wah-Univibe-Fuzz Face. Those give me the closest Hendrix tones. I don't own an Octavia, so I don't know where I'd put one if I did.
