View Full Version : Speaking of submarines, I wonder if there has ever been a drag race between

2 submarines ANY where on the Planet since the beginning of time? ..... and if the actual race was approved by the commander or if it happened while he was asleep in his quarters?
I wonder too, if it did happen, what was the manufacturer of each sub and how much horsepower did each sub make? ... and who won and by how much? :knitting
Is there is a way to power shift through the gears on a sub? Do subs have clutches?
I wonder what would happen if you revved a sub up and dumped the clutch?
I wonder too what the redline is on the typical sub, and if they have built in rev limiters?
I bolted awake in a cold sweat at 3AM thinking about this

And did a guy in a deep sea diver suit go out and stand in between them to start teh race?
And how far did they race? A full quarter knot?
Since there is no parachute, obviously, do they shoot a volley of torpedoes to counteract the forward momentum?
When you dump the clutch in a sub does it stand on it's tail for aways?
I thought most normal guys had been to submarine races before?

Submarine drag races are a BIGTIME sport where I am from.
Here's a picture of the *exciting* finish in last year's finals:

The discussion of submarine jockeys comes up from time to time and I have read that subs from different countries "test" eachother out there when the opportunity arises. They know a lot more about eachothers hardware than we'll ever know and it's been said that they put it to the test.
Of course, all of the information is classified and since the subs are essentially "invisibe" not only to us, but to their bosses, we can only imagine the games that go on in the deep.
Every so often you hear about two subs colliding and the news offers up some lame story about how it happened but, c'mon guys, a couple of multi-billion dollar subs with sophisticated electronics couldn't detect eachother and avoid a collision? ahem, me thinks them guys was hot roddin' around in their own little "unauthorized" test session, or "drag race" as one might call it.

Seriously, performance is an issue like with any military piece of gear. They have to be able to out perform the enemy! I bet USA subs have banks of Chrysler Hemis in the engine room. ( with headers, Holley 850 double pumpers and race cams of course ) http://img3.harmony-central.com/acapella/ubb/redface.gif

All great questions! I can tell I won't be sleeping much tonight either

When I was in high school, I took more than one date to the submarine races.
Oddly, they were only held at night.

Ha, I recall taking some dates to the submarine races as well. I just never remember who won, just know that I didn't score. ;)

I actually prefer the seahorse races, but I hate how those animals are treated.

I have actually been to submarine races. Well, actually "underwater vehicle competitions." Quite interesting if you're into this kind of thing. Check it out:

The nuclear reactor on USN subs drives 45,000 hp to the propellor.
Of course we can't know for sure how fast these things can go as their top speed is understandably classified, but it's often published as 25+ knots. (Yes, they do include the + in the published speed)
Although I'm sure the sound of 100 Chrysler Hemis sounds much more exciting than a nuclear reactor.;)
To answer some of the questions from the beginning of this thread:
I could be wrong, but I don't think the newest submarines have gears
In the US, submarines are manufactured by General Dynamics Electric Boat Co. and Northrop Grumman Newport News.
And for those of you not in the know, 1 knot = 1 nautical mile per hour = 1.15 miles per hour.
Does anyone know if it's possible to drift a submarine?:huh

...I'll ask my Pops, who was an actual submarine captain himself...
...compared to the competition, our subs are very, very , very, very quiet...I'm sure they are fast too...but it would be hard to race against a sub that you can't find!

Was sailng offshore with friends off Montauk, NY. All of a sudden off the starboard side a persicope comes up swivels around towards us and it surfaces and off it goes to Groton at full speed. I'd just finished Hunt for Red October where it related how blind subs could be toward surface ships, especially fiberglass ones. Interesting and somewhat in keeping with the thread

I thought we used a bunch of these wired series parallel!

You would be a normal guy, then, no?
Depends on who you ask, but it's been the subject of much debate.

But are they hand-wired?

.
Unfortunately the U.S. subs only know how to make left hand turns while their Russian, Asian & European counterparts know how to make left & right turns. Hopefully it is a drag race and nothing more.
