Is there a way to get that lead tone into a blackface fender amp?
Any possible pedal choices or no?

Into a Fender? Probably not, outside of using a modeler.

So.. is this a marshal amp type sound?
O better yet... what would you use to get it?

I beleive those guys were big ADA mp-1 users. Sure sounds like it to me.

That was a Groove Tubes Preamp. Love that tone.

Might wanna think about giving Brian Wampler a call. Might get close through a fender with a Superplextortion.

Love that lead tone!
Then again, I'm a big '80s-early '90s metal fan.
I always thought bands like that used SLOs and Boogies.

I am almost 100 sure its a ADA-MP1.

Get a multi effects pedal like a Line 6 or Vox.

If memory serves me correctly, it was a red and chrome Groove Tubes amp or a Marshall 50 watt head, half stack...? I knew a guy who worked on the session.

I have nothing to add. But I am headed to YouTube to crank some Skid Row. Thanks. :-)

I dont play much of it on guitar but some of that hair rock is a blast to crank up!
Poison by alice C is another good turn-it-up rocker.

It was an ADA MP-1.. I've got one & I can attest.. for that particular sound, my Sansamp GT-2 can almost identically mimic it. So close that I probably couldnt tell the difference blindfolded.
However, if you get a MP-1.. I suggest searching out the MP-1 "Classic" version. It's much better & quieter. Regular MP-1's are pretty noisy. thats why almost everyone you see using one has a noise gate in their rack. You wont need that with the classic version

They were using Rivera amps through Marshall cabs. Actually MY Marshall cab on the record.
I had a 60's White Marshall cab with 80 watt celestions wired to 4ohms.
Scotty used it on the whole record and I think Snake did too.

I really enjoyed that band and read about them during their heyday. I beg to differ: while they used an ADA MP1 for many tracks and live, a lot of the heavier tones and solos on that album were with the Groove Tubes preamp and of course the engineers/producer's magic fairy dust. In interviews Sabo and company referred to the Groove Tubes preamp as "the Chevy" because it looked like the engine to them.

This is not correct. "18 & Life" is, of course, from their first album. The boys switched to Riveras for their second album - Riveras were NOT in use for the debut album sessions. IIRC. And I'm pretty sure about that.
ADA MP-1 and Groove Tubes amps sound correct to me. I was pretty obsessed with their gear and tone, back in the day.
Would love to hear from Supertgtr's buddy who worked on the session!

I too was almost positive I read an early article with them where they discussed using the ADA MP-1's for the debut release.

Wow. Never would have thought that Skid Row was so popular on TGP.
I was never a big fan, but they played one year on my birthday. I was actually going to cover for a guy who really wanted to see them. Turns out things were slow at work and we both went to the show... for free! We worked at a record store and got on the guest list of all the shows for which we sold tickets.
It was an outdoor show in Hawaii and lots of fun. Don't remember what amps they were using, but I do remember Sebastian Bach climbing up the rigging for the lights, Eddie Vedder style.

I thought they had the Riveras... my bad. Scotty used my cab on that first record. Were they using power amps then or what cause my cab was used. The ADA direct sounds pretty yucky

That would be my guess-Marshalls with mods and the A/D A preamp. Lance, that cab sounds pretty special-still have it?

Dude, if I could choose between knowing who used Riveras on which album... or actually owning a cab that Scotty used... yeah, I'd go with the cab. At the end of the day, you WIN! :AOK
They would definitely have run the ADAs to a power amp then cab. And the guitar tones on that album are pretty sick, so I'd say you have a pretty nice cab there, Scotty-mojo not withstanding.

Wow, thanks guys! I will look into one of these ada's. Is the groove tube a clean preamp?

into a bf fender a mi audio crunchbox is going to be your best bet.
If you go with the ada you will need a power amp.

Actually I traded Scotty for a Twin Reverb that I had Harry Kolbe mod for me.
Scotty still has the white 60's cab and it has my 80's band named on the back in spray paint.

Ah, I had it mixed up. But no matter - that is still wicked cool.
