Maybe this is the wrong area for this question, but I'll try anyways does anyone know of any software for doing the following?

I'd like to ether play in real time with my guitar and have the sofware write in music format so I could print it out or send it to people or could I play a recording of any music and have it come out also notated?

I don't know if I even worded this correctly?

No matter what you buy...

It's not that easy... the first scenario you mention is very very difficult. The second is impossible.

1) Possible with quite a few softwares if you wanna just transcribe your own playing. I notate strings mostly this way to record live string sections with Logic. But you still have to do the ground work like defining the key, quantizing, sifting through every note to make sure that all the notes are stemmed/grouped correctly...etc.

2) Play a piece of music and have it transcribe all the parts out? Not yet I'm afraid. Possible with drums or monophonic sounds, but not arrangements that have multiple layers of instrumentation.

WOW I'm thinking ahead of technology?

scenario 1) Logic software is possibly?

scenario 2) Impossible...

I wonder how many others would like to have this possible?

The New Protools 8 writes midi data into sheet music and also come with melodyne with is a plugin that can write sheetmusic about most audio that you import. And it is the industry standard for recording.

Can you explain in detail if this would help me in my original question from the top of the thread here? Could I play my guitar solely thru it and have it notate? Would it work with both of my scenario's?

Thanks,
Ray

if you have a midi pickup, finale and sibelius will both do that. I haven't seen a real world version of the melodyne software yet. I've seen the demos but I remain highly skeptical at this point.

What has worked for me is to get my Logic editing and keyboard chops up to where I can play what i want good enough to get quantized to a click and use Logic piano roll to edit and arrange. The scoring in Logic works great once you figure it out. Logic can also convert single note guitar lines (audio) to MIDI, although it is a little sketchy. A MIDI pickup would also work, but ultimately I use a combination of keyboard playing, and mouse editing to get it sounding write, then bring it up in score editor. Expect a learning curve. Good luck.

Shawn.
