View Full Version : DC/MD/VA Gear Swap

For the past 2 years I have hosted a tone fest in May. This year instead of doing a tone fest Jon Silberman, Jon C and I will be hosting a gear swap. Given the poor state of the economy it is really hard to sell gear right now. This event will give you a chance to trade the stuff that you no longer want/need for something you want but don’t have the cash for.

Date: Saturday, June 20, 2009
Time: 1:00 to 5:00 PM
Location: Shouse Village Community Center, 1432 Towlston Road, Vienna, VA 22182

This is the same location we have had the tone fests. It is a 1 minute drive from the Wolf Trap National Park for the Performing Arts, and there is plenty of free parking.

What gear can be swapped? Guitars, amps, pedals, guitar accessories and recording gear. Please do not bring any other items to this event.

What is the cost? This is a free event.

If you have any questions please send me an email – I don’t usually check my PM’s.

DC/MD/VA Gear Swap - RESCHEDULED!!!!

Both of the air conditioners in the Community Center of my development died this weekend. The HVAC contractor will be doing some work this weekend prior to replacing both of the compressors. This will require periods where the electricity in the building will be turned off.

Given that the temperature this Saturday is projected to be in the 80’s and there will be periods where the electricity will be turned off I am going to reschedule the DC/MD/VA Gear Swap. After conferring with Jon Silberman and Jon C the new date is June 20, 2009 from 1-5 PM.

I apologize if anyone is inconvenienced by this. I was really looking forward to trading and buying some gear this weekend, but sometimes things just happen. If you have any questions please shoot me a PM or email.

Oh man, if I can break away (kids, sports, etc.), I'm in fer sher. I'll use my wife's SUV to haul a nice load of goodies! Considering there are no gear shows in this area, it's a great idea. http://www.thegearpage.net/board/images/icons/icon14.gif

Anniversaries come and go - I'm sure you've celebrated many together already - but be honest: when have you heard ever of a MD/VA/DC organized gear swap?!

I.e., get your priorities straight, mon! :p

What a great idea. You usually sell gear, take a hit financially, and then spend the money on more gear. This sounds in theory anyway, like a good opportunity to replace gear you no longer want with stuff you do want with little or no cash loss.

when have you heard ever of a MD/VA/DC organized gear swap?!

That is why this hurts so bad --- I have a carload of gear I need to get rid of and I have a "want-list" as long as my leg.

I will start setting the clocks back a few minutes at a time and see if I can get her turned back a day by the 30th!

Wish me luck!

I might be able to show up to this if I'm in town that day, it's right up the road from where I live currently (I'm in Fairfax). Would it be helpful to post a list of stuff that could be brought over before the event to give folks an idea of whether or not there's stuff they would be interested in? :dunno I have a few cabinets that I wouldn't mind moving since I don't need all of them and I'm preparing to move into a house soon. :D

P.S. Is it out of the question to have stuff for sale as well if people don't have a trade for it but might want to buy it straight up? :)

I'll have to find out from the Board of Directors of my development's Community Association if selling gear is allowable in the Community Center. I know swapping stuff isn't a problem but there may be issues with Fairfax County. The county may require a permit in order to allow gear sales. Also, Virginia may have state sales tax requirements. I'll post an update once I find out if sales are Ok.

For purposes of the BPOL tax, "business" is defined as "a course of dealing which requires the time, attention and labor of the person so engaged for the purpose of earning a livelihood or profit. It implies a continuous and regular course of dealing, rather than an irregular or isolated transaction." See Va. Code § 58.1-3700.1. One who conducts a regular business most weekends of the year can be said to be engaged in business and is subject to the BPOL tax. Conversely, it is clear that one who holds an occasional yard sale on an irregular basis would not be considered to be "engaged in business" and is not subject to BPOL tax. [Emphasis added]

Fairfax County - 703-324-INFO; 7; 5; 1; 5

Garage and Yard Sales permitted under Country Zoning Ordinances subject to 3 restrictions: (1) limit of 2 sales/year; (2) only 2nd-hand merchandise allowed; (3) limit on sign size.

How about speakers, guitar parts (necks, pups, etc.) amp parts, etc?

I like the swapping idea but it occurs to me that, should I advertise something that I was bringing, and someone who was planning on attending were to to express an interest in buying it outright, and we were to do a deal in the parking lot, then VA and Ffx Co. wouldn't really have any say in the matter. Having said that, if the organizers of this event were to ask that we not sell stuff, I would honor that out of respect for the fact that they've gone out of their way to organize this.

Whether I have anything to offer or not (I might), I'm inclined to come out just to meet some of the local TGPers face-to-face. :)

I believe, from my legal research (see prior post), that it will come down to not a question of Commonwealth or County legal restrictions but rather of the local community association's covenants/policies. The parking lot for the venue in question is community association property so if it is correct that no cash may trade hands at the venue, cash deals could still be done but you'd have to drive down the street a bit.

But let's see what Steve (FlyingVBlues) comes back with on this first.

Between the Woodrow Wilson bridge and Rt 66 it's a crap shoot as to how long it takes. It can be done in an hour with no traffic. How often does that happen though? In my experience Rt 66 has been jammed up about 75% of the times I've gotten on it. :FM

It's a great idea though, I was at the tonefest where Bill Holter did the amp shootout and it was very cool and well done.

I also hosted the tonefest where Bill did the amp shootout. This will be in the same facility, which is very easy to get to. Just get on to 495, take the exit for the Dulles Toll Road and then get off at the Wolf Trap exit. Bear right at the exit and drive a 1/4 of a mile on Trap Road, which turns into Towlston Road, and you're there. There's no need to get into any entanglements with Rt. 66.

The gear swap is being held in the Community Center of the development I live in. The only passerbys might be some toddlers and their moms on their way to the playground or perhaps someone who hears guitars playing while taking a stroll around the lake. Also, the gear swap is only being advertised on TGP, so I don't expect many non-TGPers to show up.

This is an informal, non-profit event and I am not planning on any type of security. I personally view this as a chance to hang out with some of the TGPers I've met over the years, meet some new folks and perhaps trade some gear. I've done 2 tone fests at the Community Center over the past 2 years. We have had tons of high-end amps, pedals and guitars at these events and there hasn't a single issue of anything being stolen or broken. Of course it could happen so just use a bit of common sense. If you want to walk around the room and look at gear ask someone to keep an eye on your stuff. I seriously doubt that we'll have any problems.

Remember the Seinfeld episode where George, riding the subway with the Mayor's Chief of Staff, tells him his idea for having everyone in the Big Apple wear name tags to encourage people to meet and be friendlier to each other?

The Chief of Staff mocks George for his "ridiculously stupid idea." George tells Jerry and Elaine how P.O.'d he is about how he was treated, then they turn on the TV and it goes right to a special news conference where the Mayor, grinning Chief of Staff by his side, announces "My new initiative for New York City to encourage everyone to wear name tags!" :D

Question - are SALES permitted? Or is this strictly a gear for gear transaction?

FlyingVBlues
05-16-2009, 08:58 AM
I talked with the Board of Directors of my development's Community Association and confirmed that both selling and trading gear is allowable in our Community Center. Also, there are no VA state tax issues.

Guitars, amps, pedals, guitar accessories and recording gear can be sold or swapped at this event. This also includes music books, guitar instructional tapes/CD's/DVD’s, strings, speakers, guitar parts (necks, pups, etc.) amp parts, tubes, etc. Please do not bring any other items (i.e. drums, keyboards, PA systems, DJ gear or Band/Orchestra gear, etc). to this event.

Something I suggest doing is researching the value of the items you want to trade or sell. The TGP Emporium, eBay’s completed items feature and Gbase would all be good sources of information on current sales prices.

Also, I do not want to get in the middle of any “deals gone bad”. I’m sure this also applies to Jon C and Jon Silberman. We’re just acting as hosts for the event. If you have any issues that come up as a result of a purchase or trade you’re on your own in terms of resolving the problem.

Finally, I’m not sure if it is cool to post the gear you want to sell or trade in this thread. I will check with Scott or Brian to find out and then I’ll update this post.

EDIT: Scott said that if you have gear for trade/sale to please list it in the Emporium rather than in this thread. Do not list anything you have for sale/trade in this thread!

wow...the idea of a gear swap - ROCKS.

I'd do one up in Jersey/NY/PA if I had the space (and time and energy to coordinate):facepalm

I should see if I can weasel my way to this one...I have so much crap to sell/trade.

Kudos to the brains and energy behind this!

When I first clicked on your thread this PM, I thought from how you presented it that you intended it for everyone, not just yourself. I liked that approach and thought well of it. Kinda sorry to read your clarification, of course it's your right to limit your thread as you see fit but the way I see it, the more people who post in your thread, the more bumps your own gear gets, too, fanning interest.

EDIT: What the heck, I'll put my money - I mean gear! - where my mouth is: welcome everyone to my own gear trade/sale thread - please enter it and post any gear of your own you wish to advertise along with my own gear. :)

I'm hoping to move some gear whether by trade OR sale. I'll be willing to make deals on stuff because it's cash and carry, but I'm just as willing to pick up new cool stuff in exchange. I just want people to have the option of taking home something they might want if they don't have anything I want.

This is a reminder that the Gear Swap is being held tomorrow. This event will TGP members a chance to trade or sell the stuff that they no longer want/need for something they want but don’t have the cash for.

Date: Saturday, June 20, 2009
Time: 1:00 to 5:00 PM
Location: Shouse Village Community Center, 1432 Towlston Road, Vienna, VA 22182

This is the same location we have had the tone fests the past few years. It is a 1 minute drive from the Wolf Trap National Park for the Performing Arts, and there is plenty of free parking. The facility is very easy to get to. Just get on to 495, take the exit for the Dulles Toll Road and then get off at the Wolf Trap exit. Bear right at the exit and drive a 1/4 of a mile on Trap Road, which turns into Towlston Road, and you're there.

This is a guitar focused event.

I don't see a better place to post this, but please let me know if there is one. This is a follow up to an earlier post that mentioned our event, which is now scheduled.

ROCK 'N ROLL SWAP MEET - VIENNA, VA - JULY 25TH - 11AM - 3PM

Do you have rock stuff you don't want and could turn into cash? Maybe it's an instrument, amplifier, gear, posters, CDs, books, clothing, DVDs or whatever? Then the Rock 'n Roll Swap Meet is perfect for you! Here's how it works - you gather up the rock 'n roll stuff you don't want and come on down to the Vienna Community Center (120 Cherry Street SE, Vienna, VA 22180) on Saturday July 25th between 11AM and 3PM. You park your car for free and get into the swap meet for free, then you put your stuff on display on one of our free tables. Is the idea of "free" getting through to you pal? Then other people look at your stuff and maybe want to buy it or maybe they want to swap or trade for some of their stuff. So you both have better stuff, or maybe some cash.

Or maybe you have a band and you have a pile of your CDs that you might like to trade for some other band CDs.

Or maybe you'll check out one of our vendors. Here's a couple of them and how you might plan in advance:

Morgan Henry Guitar & Bass Repair - Got a buzzy fret, action too high, want hotter pickups? Morgan Henry does electric guitar & bass setups, repairs and modifications. Bring your axe with you and let Morgan take a look at how you can get more from your instruments. He can do some basic, quick adjustments at the swap meet (for a small fee), or give you an estimate for what's needed, and even take the instrument in so you don't have to go drop it off. Check out more about Morgan at http://www.morganhenry.org/. (http://www.morganhenry.org/)

Catherine's Eclectic Jewelry & Art - Catherine MacDougall-Kamm makes really cool one-of-a-kind rings, brooches, greeting cards and small art pieces. Wear your favorite outfit and let Catherine pick the right accessory.

Angela Instruments - Since 1977 Angela Instruments has supplied thousands of hard to find items to musicians and tube audio enthusiasts worldwide. Parts, owners manuals for guitars and amps, pickups, NOS tubes and much more. Need a hard to find item? Bring that other thing that the thing you need goes on and let them help you find it. Check them out at http://angela.com/. (http://angela.com/)

Music Books - Check out tabs, style guides, fake books and how-to-play guides with our discount music book dealer.

KCA NOS Tubes - Got a tube amplifier? You need to talk to these guys. Make sure you know your exact amp model, or bring the amp with you. More at http://kcanostubes.com (http://kcanostubes.com/)

School of Rock Pick Shop - Hey, we're sponsoring the event so of course the Paul Green School of Rock Music is going to have a table at the event. We'll be offering our fabulous School of Rock logo pick for free (one to a customer) which are good for about one solo on Johnny B. Goode but look really cool lying around.

OK, are you starting to get the idea? Good. Now download our flyer http://www.sordc.com/swap_meet.pdf (http://www.sordc.com/swap_meet.pdf) or visit our webpage http://www.sordc.com/swap_meet.shtml (http://www.sordc.com/swap_meet.shtml) and start telling your friends about this can't miss event. Thank you. Oh, now go starting making a pile of the stuff you're going to bring.

If someone comes with, say, 2-3 guitars and an amp or 2, what do they do with them/where do they display them?

Are you going to have tables available? etc., etc.,

... just trying see how the logistics will work to figure out whether & how it's worth coming.

Hi, thanks for asking. We'll have free tables that anyone can use to set out their items. They aren't reserved and we'll expect people to share them, but they are free to use. So bring the guitars and set them out on a table, and stand there and chat with crowd.

To the time machine pilot, with the 40th Woodstock Anniversary coming up I am reminded of the Jerry Garcia quote about the event “While you were playing, you could feel the presence of invisible time travelers from the future who had come back to see Woodstock.”

Disclaimer - especially for this thread, our profile of equipment is not likely to be in the range of the high end stuff covered by the prior event that was the subject of this thread. Also, this is the first time we've held this event so we don't know for sure how it will work out or whether we've got the right format or not. If it works out well we hope to do it twice a year.

I just wanted to thank everyone that came to the R&R Swap Meet and came to the VVT table. The swap meet was a great time and very well done. I honestly wasn't expecting too much of a turnout but was pleasantly surprised.

Thanks to Jeff and the Paul Green School of Rock for putting it on. They must be doing something right over there as they had quite a few talented kids wailing away through the VVT's. Not the least of which was a 12 year old towards the end of the show that was nothing short of spectacular! This young man had jaws dropping all over the place.

A pleasure and thank you too, Donnie. The VVT amps blew me away - Tony should be proud of them! - but I have to say the more I think about it, the more I'm wondering how much of that great tone was directly due to your own cabs. That 1X12 Thiele w/the EV was wonderful. I still need to post a review of these fine amps on the regular amps section but thought, in thanking you, I'd post this here, too.

Thanks Jon,

I should also mention Jim Hill, Tony's partner and amp designer extraordinaire who could not attend. They are quite a team.

Thanks, but my cabs are just a little icing on the tone cake. The amps truly are the magic. Those cabs are just straight up Thiele 1x12's built exactly to EV's specs. The black one that the Earthquake was played through just has a Warehouse Speakers Veteran 30 in it. A decent speaker but certainly not a legend like the EV12L.

Thanks again for stopping by and making beautiful music. There's nothing better than hearing the amps in the hands of truly talented players! Looking forward to reading your review!

Babaji and I are planning to do another Tone Fest in late summer/early fall. We can include space for swapping gear if there is enough interest to do so. If we include the gear swap I think people need to be a little more realistic about how they are valuing their guitars/amps/pedals. I think a lot more gear would have changed hands the last time we did this if people had priced their stuff based on market values, and this is a very tough market right now.

Babaji and I talked last night and we are going to do the Tone Fest in September. Here's the info regarding date and location:

Date: Saturday, September 25, 2010 (changed due to Yom Kippur occurring on 9/18)
Time: 1:00 to 5:00 PM
Location: Shouse Village Community Center, 1432 Towlston Road, Vienna, VA 22182

This is the same location we have had the previous Tone Fests and last year's Gear Swap. It is a 1 minute drive off of the Dulles Toll Road from the Wolf Trap National Park for the Performing Arts exit, and there is plenty of free parking. This is a free event open to TGPers. I do ask that everyone contribute a few bucks for pizza and soft drinks if they can afford it.

We will start off demoing amps, followed by people having the opportunity to play any amp they are interested in. Some of the amps that will be demoed will include a Bruno Cowtipper 45, a Bludodrive, a Glaswerks SDO, a Trainwreck Liverpool and possibly a 1983 Dumble. People attedning are encouraged to bring amps that they would like to share with other TGPers. This is a chance to play through amps that are not very accessible in the DC/MD/VA area.

We will not be doing a gear swap because the Paul Green School of Rock is doing one in October. Here's the info:

Greater DC Rock n Roll Flea Market & Guitar Show
Sponsored by the Paul Green School of Rock
Sunday October 17th, 2010

General Admission is $4 and if you want to sell your gear a 10’ wide x 7’ deep space (includes a 8’ table and 2 chairs) is $35.00.

If not, now that you're aware of it, will you move the date?

Jon,

Sorry, I wasn't aware that the 18th was Yom Kippur. I will see about moving the date to the following weekend. I need to check with Babaji to see if that works for him, and also if the facility is available on that date. Anyway, we will change the date.

Thanks.

A quick additional comment now on the process. Obviously, no weekend is perfect for everyone. You may wish, though, to consider proposing one or more dates for "public comment" first rather than unilaterally choosing it. Were you to do so re: the weekend after 9/18, for example, someone would likely reply that it's the Experience PRS Event weekend (which may already be on some or many of our fellow local forumites' calendars).

Jon,

That makes perfect sense, but because of work and family demands on my schedule the only two dates that will work for me this fall are 9/18 and 9/25. I have committments for every weekend in July/August and October/November/December, so I needed to select a date in September. Doing it earlier in the month conflicts with the start of school and the Labor Day holiday, so it needed to be on either the 18th or 25th. Since the 18th is Yom Kipper, by default it will have to be on the 25th.

Perhaps I should reschedule the Tone Fest for Spring 2011? Does September 25th present problems for a lot of people?

This is Jeff with School of Rock and the Rock n Roll Flea Market. I try to monitor this thread and am glad to hear some interest in our event. If you have any suggestions for how we make this event better, easier etc, or questions, please feel free to let me know here. We've put a lot more emphasis on guitar show this year based on the response we got last year. I know this thread caters to some of the higher-end guitars and amps - if there was enough interest we could try creating a section within the event to concentrate the spaces. Not sure if that's a good idea or not, but we're open to your thoughts. We'll be bringing back some of the 12-year-old gunslingers again too.

Jeff, I thought last year's R'n'RFL was excellent and will definitely come again this year. You may want to tell folks the date ... OK, I will. :o It's Sunday, October 17. Location will again be the Ernst Cultural Community Center (http://events.insidenova.com/annandale-va/venues/show/601090-ernst-cultural-community-center) in Annandale (an excellent setting, if I may be so bold). Full info. here:

Guys, vendor tables at the Flea Market are only $35 apiece. Anyone want to split a table with me? (The $35 is not a factor, it's having to be physically present at the table with the gear. I'll consider it if at least one person splits the time with me.)

Jeff, are the VVT folks coming again? They were the highlight, for me, of last year's event! :)

I am planning on being at both events....

Unless someone snaps it up, I will bring a Sword of Satori in a 2-12 cabinet fitted with Jensen BlackBird 100-watt 12-inch Alnico speakers. I bought the speakers because they have an unusual (for guitar speakers) frequency response that will accent a great deal of guitar playing.

I will also bring the most popular combo, the small, light weight 1-12.

If there are any other speaker configurations that someone would like to see and hear, please let me know.

I’ve received a lot of PM’s and emails from people who have registered to attend PRS Experience, which is being held on September 24th and 25th, asking me if I could change the date. I called your office a couple of weeks ago to ask some questions about the Flea Market. One answer was clear: the tax form posted on your website is there for table renters' convenience and is not a requirement for getting a table. The other question was unclear - whether you can choose your table location or you have to fill out the form and pay the fee with no guarantee of where your table will be/it will be assigned to you by the organizers subject to their criteria. Can you shed any further light on the second question? Thanks.

jeffamm
09-20-2010, 05:58 PM
Jon,

Yes, the tax form is there for convenience, and not something that gets submitted to us.

We can't guarantee you'll get the table requested but I don't think there's a bad table in the house. I think we've been able to accomodate all requests regarding function (being next to another specific vendor, being near ac power, being on louder/quieter side of room, etc.).

I invite anyone local to split the cost with me, and in addition, Jon / FVB (or anyone else) if you want a table next to me/us, LMK as well and I'll either buy two tables or ask to be next to you. $35 for the table, or $17.50 a person. I may be wrong, but based on the names I see in this forum, I don't think I have a table registration from any of you. Just two things I came here to mention today. Spent to the day with the forum's own Jon S. and FVB. First, Jon and FBV are GREAT guys, both very generous with their time and just very decent people to be around generally. I've met both twice and been really impressed and the quality of these two members. Jon has the best idea for next year which should be awesome.

I did very well up until about noon, and then the buying just seemed to stop. Not sure if all the serious money came in early, but after noon, it just died. I had three people tell me they were "going to the ATM" then disappear. I had about 20 people ask me for a price, literally say "wow, great price," and then not buy! Not complaints - I'm just not sure what people were looking for.

I gave a 13 year old girl a great deal on my PRS CU22. Her face lit up when she saw it and you could tell she loved it. I even gave her a strap. She was a very decent player (big Rush fan!) with lots of potential. Going from a LP copy to a Cu22, very nice! I didn't mind losing the money on that deal, it was going to a great home.

Still, i would have liked to sell more. Part of the issue was that the school scheduled the meet as the same day as a major 5K run which made things a bit strange getting in and out. But the economy is still bad and it showed. I purposefully brought about 15 pedals $40 and under, hoping to see some action for the School of Rock kids or just casual players wanting a different toy. Sold 1. NONE of the boutique gear sold.

This is what I saw sell - "name" American gear and very low prices. In other words, stuff that never has a problem selling. Boss gear did well too, although I saw some great deals on older Boss stuff that didn't get picked up.

Had a good time, met some nice people, made a new player happy. Still didn't miss the redskins. All in all, not a bad Sunday.

Jon Silberman

Are you sure you're referring to me?! Seriously, thanks for the kind words and the feeling is mutual. I only sold $130 worth of stuff but even if I'd sold nothing it would have been worth the time and table fee just to hang with Steven and you and see forum friends like Chiba, Bill Holter, and Donnie (VVT).

Call out to Jeff: I think you did an awesome job on the inspiration and organization. Thanks!!

I had a great time hanging out with Jon and Josh today. To echo both of their comments, Josh and Jon are great guys and I really enjoyed the day. Like Josh mentioned, most of my sales were in the morning. I did have one rather odd guy come back to our table 3 times, and each time he bought something after subjecting me to long, disjointed discourses on the gear he owns. None of the more pricey pedals or a vintage Fender amp I had for sale were sold, which was a bit disappointing. Most of the buyers hadn't heard of even well known (to us) boutique pedals such a Fulltone. Mostly this was a social event. Besides spending a lot of time talking with Jon and Josh I ran into a few people I hadn’t seen in years, which was very cool. Also got to spend some time talking to Chiba, Babaji, Mike Ault and his brother, and Donnievaz and Jim Hill of VVT.

If the organizers of the flea market intend to do this again next year they should add some security and enforce volume restrictions. At times there were a number of people playing at the same time, and it was very loud. It made having conversations with potential customers difficult. Also they need better coordination with the facility. When I first arrived all of the entrances were blocked by campus police cars since a 10K race was being run. A lot of people simply left because it was such a hassle getting into the NOVA campus.

I wanted to go. Unfortunately I had a bunch of stuff come up, such that I wouldn't have been able to make it until nearly closing time. Did anyone get a sense as to whether they'll be doing it again next year?

Considering the fact that it was easily twice the size it was last year, I'd say they'll probably do it again.

Hi everyone, thanks to everyone who came to the show at NoVa. As the show organizer we're perhaps a bit biased but we feel that it was a great event. We had about 900 attendees, not counting vendor personnel, so the floor traffic and energy were very good. We got a lot of good feedback on how to improve the event, and yes, we are planning to do it again next year, and possibly twice a year. We'll post announcements here of future events. Would love to have your feedback on whether you'd go, especially as a vendor, to the event twice per year, assuming October and March/April as the timeframes.

thanks

Jeff

I would go to two shows a year.

It was a good show, aside from the school generated SNAFU. Not so far away - I could do it all in one day. And the price was right.

A few players checked out the amps, a 2-10 Gold Estoc and a 2-12 Sword of Satori. I am looking forward to some sales....

Have a great day, Eric

Thanks for the feedback Eric.

And FVB also, thanks for the feedback. We'll have a plan next time on how to manage the volume. I agree that it got too loud, despite walking around and asking some folks repeatedly to turn down. I've seen one show where they turn the power off for ten minutes every hour - ostensibly to allow for acoustic instruments to be demo'd, but it might also be a reminder to turn down and reset the noise floor. I'd welcome other ideas on best practices to manage this.

The problem that you are facing here is the reasonable audio level verses the speaker sensitivity and power levels. Nominally for lengthy exposure, the level should not exceed 85 dB. For a 5 hour show that might go to 90 dB. But the speaker sensitivity is about 100 dB per watt at 1 meter. So we are looking at running the amplifiers at about a tenth of a watt. Unless everybody is running with attenuators or have master volume controls turned way down, that is not going to be met.

The next issue is listening at low volumes is not an accurate representation of the amp's character because the speakers don't breakup and human hearing changes with level, primarily becomes less bass sensitive.

I tried using my amps' Practice Jack. It was a lost cause.... You could hardly hear it.

I did not mind the audio level, but then I was near one corner of the room and well away from the higher outputs.

That puts folks in separate rooms or having tryout rooms, or shutting the power off.....

Have a great day, Eric

FWIW, while there were times the volume got too loud (there was one particular dude wanking on an old tweed Fender that got on my nerves but that was all, really), in general, it was par for the course at music gear shows of this nature. I always bring pro ear protection with me just in case. I didn't need to use mine on Sunday nor did I experience any ringing or other negative aftereffects.

I liked the venue a lot. I hope we return there next year.

Two quick updates I thought I'd share:

Regarding the next Greater DC Rock N Roll Flea Market & Guitar Show - based on the feedback we received we're going to try to do this show twice a year, alternating between Fairfax County and Montgomery County. We're looking for a MoCo site now, and I'll update you here when there's news.

Also, for some time I've wanted to do some online writing so we recently launched an online magazine on guitar, amplifier and pedal kit building called www.guitarkitbuilder.com (http://www.guitarkitbuilder.com) . We're early on so feedback is especially appreciated to help guide it. If any of the tone enthusiasts here wanted to do some writing/reviewing, I'd love to speak with you about it.

thanks

PS why am I still listed as a "new member" since I've been on here for over a year? OK, I know I'm still 23,742 posts short of Jon, but still, after a year?

Very nice! I'm in MoCo and would be thrilled to have the event nearby.

About to check out the building e-zine now....

I'd skip a MoCo show but wouldn't begrudge my esteemed northern neighbors their own chance for a Swap Meet. I ask only to return it to NoVA the time after!

It's never to soon to get it on your calendar - the Greater DC Rock n Roll Flea Market & Guitar Show, Saturday, October 15th, 2011, 10AM-4PM at Northern Virginia Community College in Annandale, VA.

This year's theme, "Our Third Annual Event - We May Get It Right This Time!" reflects our efforts to solicit feedback after last year's show and adopt some changes, such as:

- Bigger, pro-seller booths
- More, cheaper individual-seller tables
- Wider aisles
- Saturday show
- Firm plan for noise control and an amp tryout area
- Food and drinks available
- Admission incentive to bring a guitar or amplifier into the show

Hope you guys can all make it. FYI, we tried to make a MoCo show work but couldn't find a suitable venue. We'll keep looking for the future.

All great improvements! Looking forward to the event.

BTW, did you look at any of Montgomery College's campuses for a MoCo venue?

Hey folks, I actually JUST moved up here to the MoCo area and just figured I'd say hello and I'm looking forward to being a part of future events! I've almost always got some cool stuff I should probably be selling, hah, but really I'd just like to meet up with some folks and check out some gear. Also just in general if anybody wants to play some music or something send me a PM for sure. I'm a bit more on the experimental side and don't play a lot of traditional stuff but if there are any fellow weirdos out there let me know--i still haven't really met many people 'round town yet!

Thanks! :beer

Just a reminder, with three weeks to go, the Greater DC Rock n Roll Flea Market & Guitar Show on Saturday, October 15th from 10AM-4PM at Northern Virginia Community College in Annandale, VA. Details at www.rockfleamarket.com. Annoying auto-play video has been disabled, so you're safe.

For you MoCo guys, dig out your passports :omg and schlep on over to Virginia, and bring a guitar or amp with you to save a few bucks.

if any NoVa folks are going to be getting a table & might be interested in splitting, let me know... I'm unsure still I can make it that day (parental health issues to deal with) so can't commit to a table in my own name but I'm sure I can find some things to dangle out there at good prices for folks.... if I can make it.
