A friend's ninth grade son is getting into Hendrix and wants to know what would be some good videos about his life to see.

Any recommendations?

Live at the Fillmore East is cool (live footage + documentary talk), and I think I remember a documentary on the making of Electric Ladyland a couple years back.

Get "A Film About Jimi Hendrix".

Made shortly after his death, this is one of the first documentaries to be constructed entirely of interview and stock footage (no voiceover or host - a technique that is common today, but was unusual at the time).

There's a lot of performance footage, and a lot of commentary from the folks that knew him - girlfriends, family, roadies, rock stars, etc. There's also plenty of him talking - you get a real sense of how funny he was.

I think many Hendrix-ophiles coinsider this the best thing going. I know I do.

A film about Jimi Hendrix is great. I think it has some added footage too.
Also the new version of the Making of Electric Ladyland has added footage. Rainbow Bridge is okay. Read the reviews for his stuff on Amazon before you buy anything. Like the records, 1/2 the DVDs are bogus and he's not even on them.
