Well, have $300 in MF certificates burning a hole in my pocket and been thinking of getting some basic recording equipment. Nothing fancy just something to develop some ideas on and hopefully improve my playing.
I had an old 4-track I used to play with years ago and this is the first time I’ve looked at what is out there. Been looking at the offerings from Boss, Tascam, Fostex. (MF doesn't sell Zoom)
The Boss MicroBR and BR-600 are obviously targeted at the guitarist and have a lot of features but wondering if they suffer from “Jack of all, master of none” syndrome.
The Tascam stuff seems to have the reputation of being easy to use and sacrifice guitar based bells and whistles for better recording features.
The Fostex sits somewhere between.
My thinking right now is to put my money in a solid recording device, use my Zoom G2.1u for my amp models and pickup a decent drum machine for rhythms. Or just run strait out my pedal board and maybe mic an amp later. So those features may not be as important to me. I know the modeling stuff may be nice but it would be redundant. A foot switch punch in is a little important, I remember using it with my old one and it worked surprisingly well.
If going with an external drum machine it looks like a MIDI interface is nice to have.
Although the BR-600 is a bit more than I’d like to spend right now it looks like it has about everything I would want, but a bit wary of what limitations it may have.
So looking for any input that I haven’t thought about yet. Decided I really don’t care for trying to record with a computer.
Over all think that what you can hold in your hand is way more advance than anything the Beatles recorded Sgt Pepper on is amazing.
