I just bought a Badger 18 head and just got the cab today and loaded it with a hellatone V 30 and man! its like Real nice. While i was waiting for the cab etc. I ordered a set of NOS GE EL84s for like over a 100 a matched pair. The GEs were weak and rattie sounding with no bass. Were talking clean settings here. Called the guy to return them i got the bird :) any body want some GEs ? lol! there free...
anyway guys i think its cheaper and safe to stick with JJs which came in my Badger.
i'll not trust any nos dealers again!
good luck with de tubes

It'd be strange for them to be terrible tubes if they're truly NOS. I wonder if they just need a slightly different bias from what the JJs did? I had a pair of Amperex EL84s that'd redplate in my modded Pro Junior but worked fine in a Gibson amp (which means the bias voltage was too hot). I'll take 'em off your hands if you're serious, but you might talk to an amp tech about whether a slight change in bias resistor might solve your problem...

If you're serious, I'd gladly take them off your hands.
But that really sucks that you didn't get what you bargained for. I wonder what is wrong? Perhaps the tubes are outside the bias range for your amp? GE 6BQ5 should be a good, smooth tube.
The JJs are a good current-production choice.

I put them in a Badger 18 its cathode biased. The GEs like i said were rattie and not much bass at all compaired to the JJs that came in the amp. I got a feeling i was just taken for stupid. and stupid i was for trusting a well known dealer. lol! live and learn the hard way. I'll try them in another amp i have a zinky supro sahara but i've heard good and bad in all my amps and know what the good sounds like. He knows i know.

I recently asked Phil at Matchless about recommendations for EL84's, and he recommended sticking with the JJ's. Not that there aren't nice NOS ones, just that there isn't a dependable supply anymore since the existing stock has been so thoroughly picked over. He also suggested that some tubes that didn't make the cut when stock was abundant are now being sold as first-rate...
