Yep, he's a killer. Been around quite a long time. He's on some of Kim Wilson's and Lou Ann Barton's CDs, and many other blues artist's CDs. Try doing a Google search. Should get you some info that might lead to something else.

The only blues cat in Austin that I could go see weekly and not get tired of!

Check out Doug Sahm's "The Last Real Texas Blues Band," if you haven't already. O'Brien's all over it, and he's awesome.

Nice to see Derek getting his due, very deserved. Back in the day when Antone's was on Gaudalupe they would just bring in the big names and the house band would provide the backing. So every week at least he'd be the musical director working with all the blues legends. What a rhythm section - Sarah Brown, George Rains, Mel Brown switching between guitar and keys and Derek.
As noted above the best way to hear more of him is search around for the Antone's label releases. He produced and/or played on the vast majority of them.
And if you're ever in Austin he still leads the 'Blue Tuesday ' band every week at Antone's.
Cheers,
J

There's a documentary called Antone's Home of the Blues. He's featured on it quite a bit. Albert Collins loved him. Netflix has it.

Better yet, check out the Albert Collins - 'Live from Austin' DVD. Derek is in the band and Albert lets him cut loose quite a bit...

Thank you for bringing up this guy. Great chops.

Check out: Milk Cow Blues by Willie Nelson. Great record, produced by Derek O' Brien who also is the main guitar player here. Great stuff!

Does anybody know where to find more stuff by Derek?

I heard from an Austin drummer that Derek O-Brien is on retainer in a band with a somewhat pornographic name that I don't recall, said band being financed by an extremely rich person who basically gets to have his own on-call blues band. Also, he (Derek O'Brian) works as a clerk in a record store.

Wild rumors, all of this, but it's what I've heard.

Ditto on "Last Real Texas Blues Band."

The band is "titty bingo"and it seems like he has been with them since th 90's or so... I think it is one of the Jamal brothers bands, and yes the guy is very wealthy.
