View Full Version : Read TGP on your iPhone or other mobile device

We now have an iPhone template that formats the content for that device.
If you use this URL (note the "?styleid=7" at the end), you'll get it.
http://www.thegearpage.net/board/?styleid=7
When you get back to your computer, it'll probably still be using the iPhone template. To get back to the normal view, just use the URL below.
http://www.thegearpage.net/board/?styleid=1
Caveats:
I don't think you can post from your phone. [Edit: Looks like I was wrong about this one]
I've spent all of 5 minutes testing and probably haven't found all the glitches.
Please don't ask for any major changes. I might tweak the colors when I get around to it (make them more TGP-like) but we're probably not going to put a lot of time into this feature.
Enjoy.

Assuming you're using the URL linked above to set the theme, I'd expect it to look something like this.

I guess I don't understand what the other way is accomplishing.I expect most folks would find it a bit easier to navigate with a more iPhone-ish look & feel. If you prefer having it the same as on your laptop you're certainly welcome to use the default template.

Yes....so far, MUCH easier and simpler to navigate.
Good stuff!
PS.....want to get rich? Come up with an app that instantly streamlines ANY web page like that for the iPhone.
Works great!
Excellent job.

Suggestion:
Make the menu items "float" if possible, but it not, then place them at the bottom of the thread as well as the top.
Thanks for the great support!

Seems to work well - why not go ahead and do a redirect off a subdomain or something so its easy to get to, like
iphone.thegearpage.net
or
thegearpage.net/iphone
Just a suggestion. I like easy to remember URL's like that.

Thanks! No rush, really, I just think it would make things easier for folks who use both iPhone and desktop computer.
I suspect there may be a way to tell what browser is used ... and redirect to that URL.
BTW, are you folks intending to do anything about better supporting RSS? I think that might put less strain on the servers, but it is pretty useless to only get 15 messages every 15 minutes, or whatever the settings are.
I also want to go on record and say that you guys do a great job supporting this community you've set up here, and it is very easy for me to justify being a supporting member. Thank you very much for your efforts!

As for RSS, there's no good answer. RSS isn't really a good protocol for dealing with the amount of churn we have on this board. :(

NEWSFLASH!
Man makes millions from simple but practical idea on music discussion website. It all started on a strange website called "TGP" and evolved from there. In interview, Brian Scherzer, managing partner of TGP stated, "Yes, I remember Alec when he was just a burned out shell".

Thanks Aclee. This works well on my Samsung Impression phone. One suggestion: Is there any way to remove the "Sticky" threads from this view? The way it is now, with the small screen, I have to do a lot of scrolling in each sub-forum to get to the first non-sticky post.

I don't have an iPhone, but have been enjoying TGP on my mobile phone for the past 3 years using the Opera Mini Browser. It uses proxy servers to re-size the page into one column, so there's never any horizontal scrolling (unless you want it).
By far my favorite browser for mobile. http://www.opera.com/mini/

Great app - it works beautifully on my iPhone. I travel a fair amount throughout Europe, so what I'm saving in 3G costs I'll donate to TGP - Thanks!

Ok, for all us idiots like me that are new to the iphone, how do you get to TGP without going through safari? Is it an app, or do you still have to get there with safari?
New book for you guys...

TGP will still be a website to your phone, but if you want to get to it more quickly you can put a direct link icon on your homepage/desktop. Just go to the page you want (I chose the "Guitars in General" forum), hit the "+" button and then click "Add to Home Screen". It will let you name the shortcut, and you'll see it pop up!

Can you change the name of the thread to "...on your iPhone or Blackberry?
I'm afraid Blackberry users won't realize this works for them as well and it's a major improvement.
Just a thought.

FYI, I created a poll (http://www.thegearpage.net/board/showthread.php?t=568429) to solicit input about where to have this info when this thread gets whacked down the road.
