Hi!

I'm recently in the process of switching some hardware in my Epiphone Les Paul Studio Gothic, and I changed the pickup selector. After much cursing because the original soldering job from Epi was awful, I managed to put things just right. I used one of these switches (http://www.stringsdirect.co.uk/products/4625-allparts_toggle_switch_short_straight_economy_boxe d_electronics). I soldered the wires in the same spots as the stock Epiphone switch.

Everything *seemed* to go ok and the new switch feels great, until I selected the middle position (both pickups) and I could barely tell the difference from that and the neck pickup. After much fiddling, it seems that the bridge pickup is indeed on together with the neck, but the neck volume selector goes something like:

10 -> almost all neck pickup. Should be: blend with both.
7/8 -> pickup blend. Should be: ~60% bridge, ~40% neck.
6/5 -> almost all bridge pickup. Correct.
5 to 0 -> close to above, volume descending.
0 -> no sound. Should be: bridge pickup only.

The original used to be that either volume pot would control volume for one pickup when both were engaged.

What's wrong? :dunno

that's a crap switch is what's wrong. check the colors of the wires to make sure you didn't accidentally swap something, but that's still a crap switch.

correctly wired, though, when the switch is in the middle, turning one volume or the other all the way off will kill the sound.

When changing the switch I actually put bits of scotch tape on the wires as not to make any mistake, since I have one red and two whites (3 wires + ground). I'm going to try and remove the middle wire and see what happens. Can I short anything or something if I'm doing this live while plugged in to my Pod XT Live (not an amp) ?

you wouldn't hurt anything even if you were plugged into an amp.
