I've always used 22 gauge stranded wire as that's what I noticed came in Warmoth's wiring kit.
What affect does other gauge wire have on tone? Stranded wire vs. solid core? What are the differences?

In a guitar? 0 I say.

Yeah, in pickup/control wiring. So no affect at all?

If you're talking about a normal range in size I say no but if you got to something ridiculous like in the 40's or smaller I guess it could start to affect it. Remember most pickups are wound with a #42.

I'd agree with this. At least, nothing that could be noticed.

tone is in the hands of the player.

Normally switch and pickup wiring is a non-issue, but if you use shielded wire going to the jack you'll add a little capacitance. Whether you'll hear it or not depends on a bunch of other details.

The larger the wire is, the lower the output of the pickups, and there may be tonal effects related to wire size as well.
The distances are too short for the resistance to become significant compared to the resistance of the pickups, so the sound effect is NIL.
The thinner wire has a much higher chance of semi-breaking to a sound-ruining almost-disconnected, not to mention it's harder to work with in the first place.
