I already have the fuzz, OD, Wah, univibe covered so what 2 or 3 pedals do I need for shoegaze/space rock (Catherine Wheel, Built to Spill, Smashing Pumpkins, Hum, Ride, Slowdive)? I assume a delay & reverb?
TIA

Love those bands:
You'll want two delays.. maybe one with looper.
My favs for this stuff :
DMM
DL4
Maestro phaser
Vox wah
insert FUZZ here (muff, dano cool cat fuzz)
a good boost at the end of the chain to get your tone back
reverb pedal like digitech hardwire or original Boss reverb made in japan
tape echo ala Nick McCabe

Boss. Many of great Shooey bands of the 90's played them, including Lush, Catherine Wheel and Swervedriver.

You need some reverb, Tech 21 Boost RVB or Line 6 Verbzilla should do the trick.

There is no bigger Swervedriver fan than I, and there can't be many who love Ride more than I do, but you don't need to settle for Boss pedals to achieve the same effects (I've been telling Adam of Swervie to bring in some Solid Gold pedals). A GOOD delay is a good delay, so a SuperDelay or Replica will get you a great effect and better tone (or better reliability and less cash than the above mentioned tape echo). Now, if you're on a budget, you can console yourself with the fact that, yes, some of those bands used Boss (and others used crap rack gear, and still others used then top-of-the-line Roger Mayer stuff). Since you've got a Univibe, you might want a Catalinbread Valcoder for square wave stuff.

The RE-20 is a digital simulation of the RE-201 and it is a fair bit cheaper than either the SuperDelay or the Replica, especially used. I've seen them go for just a little more than $150 used which is some real bang for the buck. And it does sound pretty darn good.

My point was that if you're NOT on a budget, you can get stuff that sounds better than, say, Boss (I think Boss has horrendous tone sucking powers). If you're on a budget then, yes, definitely, Boss will get you there. I may have missed the OP's point, in which case I apologize. -E

Lovepedal Echo Baby might be a great sounding cheap(er) option. -E

yer gonna need two delays - one analog one digital. Analog for the space age jet plane modulations and digi for the rhythmic repeats and looping. I also prefer to use one delay fer slapback instead of running a verb YMMV.
run your dirt pedals INTO the wah for that patented Swervedriver WAH sweep sound.
Run modulation after your delays to get the repeats swirled out and extra psychedelic
after that its FUZZ / Dirt to taste
I had Solid Gold (nice to see greg getting the props here) build me a custom muff that was originally gonna be Swollen Pickle specs but ended up somewhere more in the vicinity of a vintage triangle muff. I also run a modded Distortion +, a tonebender mkII and a zvex fuzz factory.
Another thing ive found really NAILS that Swervdriver / Ride two guitar sound is to play thru two amps with differant effects on each. Leave one clean / mild overdrive let the other one bask in the MUFF. Gets yo uthat uber crisp yet uber distorted tone alot of those bands used. If i recall correectly from interviews most of those bands were into the two amp thang.

Great advice, and yep, I know Adam Franklin from Swervedriver is always using an AC30 and a JCM 800 in tandem.

Not to get too far OT, but I've gotten great Swervie-type wah by running a CryBaby through the Muff Greg at SGFX built me :BEER (Is yours called the Sonic Boom?) Speaking of, Greg's SuperDrive is both a D+-based pedal (barely) AND the world's great drive pedal. There, I said it. (It's the pedal I've really been encouraging Adam to use instead.) Greg's also adding a Tone Bender MKIII tone stack to my Agent 13.
Okay, back to shoegazing!

3 pedals?
you'd benefit from a delay with analog tonal qualities, a digital delay that can also act as a looper, and a reverb pedal.
on the cheap, i'd say a de-7, a headrush, and a digiverb..
if you can swing more expensive stuff, i'd say a timefactor, ad-999, and a verbzilla.
that is, if it must be mass produced.

"but you don't need to settle for Boss pedals to achieve the same effect" who the hell are you? Boss is the shiz, i wouyld have agreed 5 years ago, but ive got an rv5, dd7, ch1, tr2, ds1, and soon to be modded bd2...ive tried most everything mentioned on these boards at one time or another, but boss has always been great

Greg has modded a bunch of my pedals. Did my crybaby, pimped my distortion +, built the Muff (i dont know if it has a name.. he just tweaked it until he was happy comparing it to some of his vintage faves), modded my smallstone, made me a sick custom switcher unit...
Okay, back to shoegazing!
yeah im gonna crank up Loop - A Gilded Eternity

Who the hell am I? :argue I'm a guy who's tried about a dozen Boss pedals and NEVER thought they were great. To keep this totally on topic, I didn't start playing guitar until I discovered Ride and Swervedriver. The first pedals I bought were a Crybaby, Sovtek muff, and a Boss muliteffects unit. The Boss was the first thing to go. The only Boss pedal I've used (not to say tried) in the last 17 years is the TU-2 and I hate that, too (to be fair, I think I just don't like tuners). And to show I'm openminded, I just tried the RT-20 Monday night.
I'm not saying you can't make good music with Boss; obviously you can. However, I feel comfortable saying there are MUCH better sounding alternatives for virtually every Boss pedal made. Whether or not people think those alternatives are cost effective is a different sotry. -E

It's hard to argue with the fact that many of the great shoegazer albums of all time were recorded using Boss pedals. They're not my favorite, either, but they obviously sounded good enough for the original artists. Personally I prefer Lovetone stuff.

I'm looking at a pic of Andy Bell (Ride) during the making of Carnival of Light. He's surrounded by pedals and there's not a Boss in sight. A lot of those bands rented gear when they came to the States and I think Boss was easy to get a hold of, and it's not like Boss pedals don't work.
Again, though, I agree you CAN make great music with Boss pedals. I just think it's easier if you use other pedals instead. :) -E

when you're layering sounds over each other, throwing a few boss pedals in the chain does not really effect your tone. I often add the trem/pan PN-2 pedal in there and it quiets the signal by a tit's hair that's all. If you're buggin' about that put it all in a Boss LS-2 line/loop selector pedal. I dare anyone here to tell me they can hear the difference with the LS-2 in a chain. If you can, better go help Eric Johnson rewire his studio!
Boss Super Feedbacker Distortion is another great one.

bah Shields has every Boss pedal in that chain! So insane! I wonder if half of that stuff is just for show so that no one could snag his sound. Only some of the pedals have the yellow tape on them that have certain song titles on them. They were pretty secretive in the studio as well. There's just no way he's using all those each night. I saw them play and there was fairly simple guitar sounds, but tons of loops happening.

guys, obviously there are "better" brands than boss, but the whole point of this thread was to suggest mass produced pedals that can get those sounds. that's why boss came up. it's kind of retarded to argue about boss.......

Must be his main one and he adds in depending on the venue or he just isn'y bringing the 800 along live anymore. Sorry to derail.

I wasn't sure what "mass produced" means. Does T. Rex count? They're at GC. Ditto Fulltone, Electro Harmonix, Swollen Pickle, etc. Hell, look at all of the pedals that are readily available online via PGS, ToneFactor, GuitarX, etc.
Listened to Going Blank Again on the way in today. Wonder why :) -E
