I have zero experience with EQ gear. Not even sure if this goes on the pedal board or on top of the amp.

MXR 10 Band EQ does come to mind as an excellent EQ.
Whether it goes on your board or on your FX loop is completely up to you. Mine is very happy in the loop now, but it has a tendency to move to the board from time to time...

Thanks! My Silver Face Bassman head doesn't have an FX loop, but I can't think of a good reason to clutter up my already cluttered pedal board any more than it is already!

You might want to check out some of the newer Parametric EQ pedals. You will be able to dial in the actual frequencies you want to cut or enhance as opposed to cutting and boosting "set in stone" frequencies in a graphic EQ.
The Empress and Fromel parametric EQ's come to mind.
I own the Empress ParaEQ and LOVE it for use before or after the dirt.

+1
MXR make the 2 best EQ pedals by some distance IMO.

All your advice is great, and now I'm wondering if I've totally missed the important point. I started out trying to solve a relatively minor annoying problem (a faint high pitched squeal at longer delay settings - I have sensitive ears, many might not notice it), and I've learned a lot today from you and doing research online about how great a good EQ can be for your tone. But if I'm just chasing that little squeal, I'll need to cut out high frequency at the end of my tone chain, right before the amp - not the best way to use the EQ. Maybe I should just learn to live with the little squeal on the few occasions when I want 300+ms delay, and use the EQ for what it is designed for - after the drive stage to shape my overall tone. If I go that route, how do you rate the MXR M-108 vs. for example the Fromel Shape EQ, which looks very very cool and high quality but costs twice as much (assuming I can get a good deal on ebay for the MXR). Remember, I know absolutely nothing about EQs except what I've learned today from you and some follow-up research.

In all honesty, I would say that they only reason one EQ might be better than another EQ would be how they affect your tone. By this I mean weather they are silent (some EQs can be noisy) and what other features they offer. Parametric EQs are nice in the sense that they allow you to adjust specific sections of the frequency spectrum while graphic EQs only offer certain chucks.
It is a matter of personal preference. While a parametric EQ such as the Empress might be very nice, I don't see how I would get twice the EQ than say the MXR (based on price). Perhaps if it had presets then I would say yes, but since they are basically doing the same function I would always choose the MXR. I also prefer to see what frequecies I am adjusting at a glance rather than trying to figure out the frequency, the Q, etc... But again, it is a matter of personal preference.
...just get the MXR... :p

The new Empress EQ is supposed to be rad.

The high squeal noise from your delay (Im guessing analog)sounds like the age-old effect known as "clock noise". If it's completely unbarable I'd have it sent to a solid effects PRO to have the trimmers recalibrated (do not do this at home unless you KNOW exactly what and how it's going to be treated. An eq pedal wouldn't mkae that problem disappear though. Good luck!!! :)
