View Full Version : I finally have enough money for a new delay.. what do I get?

Here's what I'm thinking as options

(in no particular order)

-EH DMM
-2 Carbon Copies - One set Shorter, One set at full. Could be very cool having the short run into the long.
-Damage Control Timeline
-Diamond ML 2
-Seymour Duncan Deja Vu (if it ever makes it out of its cage)

I'm looking for a Andy Timmons/David Gilmour type sound. I use delay mostly for leads, and ambience. I don't use them much for U2 type sounds. I will always run it in an effects loop, so it has to have line level capability.

I also haven't ruled out cheaper options
-dd20
-nova delay/repeater

I'm currently not playing gigs, so I feel bad overindulging and dropping 500+$ on a delay that will only be used (for now at least) for my own enjoyment and for recording.

So?

EHDMM.

You're welcome.

find a used Eventide Time Factor. Perfect in a loop with its lin/amp switches and they are very reasonable used...

get 1 CC, but not two... and wait for the repeater to come out.

If thats the case you've pretty much ruled out the diamond ($599) and the dc timline ($400).

Oh, and the timeline does seem great, and it's incredibly versatile. But, is it sound really as good as the DMM, or ML 2? I wish I could try one out before buying..

The Deja Vu seems like a logical choice as well, it's cheap and has great features. To be honest though, I didn't really like the sound on the demos I heard. If it does have a sound comparable to the DMM, i think it may be the way to go.

Get a Wampler Analog Echo and the new Malekko 616 or 919 when they come out. The Wampler delay sounds incredible, and the tone control gives you a wide range of sounds. No modulation though...

And if you wait a bit the new version of the Wampler Echo will have modulation -- really curious about that one!!

This is what I'm doing actually. I love the carbon copy. Timmons is one of my tone-idols and it works really well for those kinds of applications. I don't use the modulation on it much, but it's a very nice addition none the less. THat said, as you probably know, Timmons uses the DMM, so there is that to consider since you are using his sound as one of your models. I'll be getting the nova repeater when it comes out mainly for rhythmic delays, but for other stuff as well.

Well they are beginning to ship this week. I have no idea if they'll be easy to get or sold out, but we're shipping them out as fast as possible.

David Gilmour fan here. For ambience the timeline kills.

I'd jump on a used Eventide Timefactor (save some cash this way), then get one of this1smyne's eventide switches and mini exp pedal. And then spend the rest on a good analog delay like a dm2 or the analogman/malekko ones or a boss dd5.

Line6 DL4

Can't be beaten for value... Tap tempo... Use an expression pedal with it and you've got two variations within the one preset... The looper is good as well, pity it's not possible to assign it to a button though, you have to select it with the knob but you can't have everything at that price. You do get 16 types for your 200 quid though... So 3 presets (6 with the expression) and a looper?!

Must be why their on most peoples boards...

Have fun

I guess maybe if I ran it in its own loop to deal with the loss of tone it could be an option.

Out of curiosity, why is everyone against having 2 CCs? Would it be better to get one CC and one of something else?

ML2... you can set the level internally if I'm not mistaken... though the mod isn't as revered as the DMM, I like the tone of it better. And the tilt-eq on the repeats gives you lots of options of the type of echoes you want.

I was going to do exactly that but I ended up getting a Keeley AD-9 for the shorter slappy things and I am really glad I did. The two of them work well together. The Carbon copy is a little dark but that works for me. I don't,however, like the way they work in the FX loop. For smaller things where I don't bring my pedal board, i use a chandler delay (rack) in the loop. If you can find someone silly enough to part with one... that is the one to use in an FX loop.

Good Luck on your quest.

Two DE7's. Save your money. The guy at www.gilmourish.com had this set up for his live rig before going to the CC.

+1 on the Damage Control Timeline. If I had the funds it would be on my board right now. Add a midi controller to access all the available patches and you will be set for good.

myspace.com/youngpedals. Seriously. The tone on this thing is so great I actually walked across guitar to better hear a dude noodling on guitar (turned out he was demoing the pedal).

I love the Replica and am interested in the Superdelay but, since you don't need features and wanna keep costs down, I'm going for the most tone for the least $-E

so here's what I'm thinking... I can go ahead with the timeline, or atleast wait for the deja vu to try, but still possibly end up with the timeline then. at least that way I'll have a clear conscience!

You might want to consider the EHX Stereo Memory Man w/ Hazarai as well.. you get LOTS of features, 8 presets, and a looper! But if you don't need the looper, I vote for the T.C. Electronic Nova Delay. You probably can't go wrong with the Nova Repeater either. IMHO, it's better value for your money than the Carbon Copy.
