This pedal sounds great on youtube. The RAWK mode sounds like a purple plexi or RRR. Has anyone compared the DLS to PP, RRR, Tim (in .5 volt and assymetrical clipping mode), Wampler's dirt boxes????

Sorry, but what's an RRR? I know it as a Radical Red Reverberator but I don't think that's what you mean.
Great pedal, could use a bit more volume on tap but it sounds superb.

Are you refering to the DLS? Mine is unity gain at 9:00.

Yep, in an effects loop I had it maxed out just to get barely above unity. It's better when not in the loop. The effects loop did not have a volume control though. Still sounds great!

Never have I ever heard of someone putting a dirtbox in the loop... unless it's a boost...

I have two white DLS. One unity at 9:00 the other at 12:00. Tone controls are the same as loudness. The first and louder one is much brighter as well. V2 people?

Yeah I have the purple DLS and my unity is around, 10:00. Weird stuff. Great pedal either way. I think its most comparable to Timmy. Low gain, transparent. AWeSOME!

Maybe your JFETs are running at a higher plate voltage in one of them. :dunno

It ain't designed for an effects loop cause not all effects loops are designed equally. Don't put the DLS there!

Same circuit. Perhaps we didn't put our knobs on in the same position.

The DLS transparent?? What amp are you running it into? It's about as un-transparent as can be in my experience. Which is fine, I believe it is supposed to have a specific tonal characteristic.
I had a Lovepedal provalve which I have been told is much like a Purple Plexi. I replaced it with a DLS. The DLS is much more like an Overdrive, but with a good amount of gain on tap. The Provalve was a little to harsh and hard to tame the high end much like a DS-1. I use mine in Rawk mode with the knobs all at 1 o'clock. I also run a Fuzz Face clone into it which sounds killer for solos.

I thought it was transparent too. But that term to me is when describing the clarity of the clipping. There are some ODs that have what sounds to me like random overtones all clashing together, and others like the DLS that seem to have them all aligned so notes have alot more string definition that can be heard through the saturation.
With some I hear clashing and others a nice pristine breakup.
I think that is what some refer to as transparency in the distortion character. Ths DLS is transparent from that terminology.
Now as far as transparency by way of tone color, no, the DLS gives a fat Marshall voicing, while still being a pristine OD, and to my ears that is what makes Vox and Marshall amps have that sizzle to them when overdriven, and chime when clean.

DLS is marshall box for stacking into
Tim/my is transparent for stacking into
completely different animals. unless you hate your amp's distortion, the tim/my is the way to go. i tried the DLS on a Sunn Model T from the 70s as well as on my Tiny Terror and didnt care for it as much as I like my Timmy into those. maybe im used to the timmy, but i dont like the heavy coloring the dls added

I agree with you. I refer to that as clarity or openness.

No. Knobs not the issue. I've brought it up (on the dark side, FSB)
I suspect the pots are Audio taper in the second one. They react like audio, where as the first one is clearly linear.
Or unlike the first,
R10 or R21 are populated.
They are very different in tone, vol and punch.

I don't think that FS.o is the darkside. :roll
If there is a difference in these it could be pot taper I guess... However they are all alpha linear taper 100Ks on Tone and Volume. The difference between the pots we've used are the lug types PCB pin and solder lug. I suspect there could be a difference in the taper of them. Unless somebody here made a mistake, R10 and R21 has always been UNPOPULATED. The only reason for the inclusion on the PCB was incase we found that we needed to change the rule of the pots taper, which by the first time we populated a production version we like the taper rule as it was and decided we didn't need to include them. Other than that differences would be the variation of tolerances of parts in most cases +/-5-10%. There has NOT been any circuit revisions.
But it does bring up a point. I brought it up on FS.o. And suggested others try it in DLS "tribute" clones. Last week we tried the DLS circuit with SOZO Mustard Clones and really freaking loved it. They won't fit inside a normal DLS though these will be featured in the higher priced handpainted "Usual Suspects"... @ $2.50 a cap it adds up really fast.

I guess it is safe to spill the beans. There will be 10 in this series so far 5 of which are already spoken for... We're waiting on the Sozo caps right now.
Functionality the left side is a DLS with SOZOs. Internally on the DLS side it has a 3 way slider switch which allows you to select from 2 bright cap values or complete bright cap bypass. This is great if you run the DLS GAIN below noon and need to fine tune for your particular rig.
The right side is a germanium boost section that can be used independantly or cascading into the DLS side. It has a knob for gain and a three way toggle. This toggle is on the top of the case. It's function is Faux Fuzz/Mid resonance boost/classic treble boost.
The paint jobs are done by Sharlet Thompson, a gifted artist and partner of Derek, longtime Catalinbread crew member and the dude who does all of our website work. After her being laid off I encouraged her to pursue her callings and CREATE!
Considering the types of parts, the craftsmanship of the builder, the one of a kind nature of the paint job, and the very limited quantity produced these will be a bit more pricey than our standard line. They will be $475.
We will be producing some videos of it demonstrating how it will be the only pedal you need for a gig... Myself and everybody in the crew has made a slot on their pedal boards leaving room for ambience, modulation and/or a wah.

I run my DLS into my maz 38, and while I agree with you that it does have the marshall vibe.....your guitar still shines through. But I wouldn't say that it is un-transparent. Different strokes for different folks!

I was reading thru the FS thread and thinking " it'd really be cool to have this pedal + boost in the same box". So when is the plain jane version gonna be available?http://www.thegearpage.net/board/images/icons/icon7.gif

That's a great question. I find a Ge boost into a DLS is a pretty sweet stack!
