coming from the back of the room. Thinking to myself, I hope that amp, whatever it is, isn't too expensive (cause I'm gonna buy it!) as I weave my way to the back of the store to find out. Hummmmmm, a guy playing a LP thru.............a darn Cube 60! Laughed to myself, shaking my head, thinking....Rod, you idiot, you have one of those! So I get home a while ago, yep, sure is a nice little cheap amp isn't it?

I've been humbled at tone fests where there must be $100k of amps in the room and Vinni "v-pick" Smith shows up with his Cube 60 and sounds as good as anyone. I HATE that!

I have known a few guys that basically sounded great through ANYTHING! The guitarist in one of my old bands had a Squire Tele, and a peavy solid state amp, and I kid you not, EVERYONE thought his tone was just amazing. He made MY gear sound like a million bucks when he borrowed my rig (and I sounded VERY average through it)

Vinni and Gabriel Manzo are friends with Jim Wagner of WCR. Wags will tell all: Vinni and Gabe are amazing on the Roland amps.

Cube 60's kick ass!! One of the best tones I've ever heard was 2 Peavey Bandits and a Roland GP-8..I've said this many times..Stuck with me all these years..

I had no idea these things were that versatile. For the $$$$ that is the perfect lil small gig amp bar none.- Sir Douglas T

They are a GREAT amp, Vinni and Gabe both have one and both sound murderous with them. I myself wound up getting a total of 4 2-1/2 watt Micro Cubes for myself, Dillon, and a coupla other friends. Great little amp to easily drag around on trips, etc. Last weekend I was at Gabe's, and he was tearing it up on his 30 watter. Then Vinni showed up and did the same. Then a guy who does beautiful cabinet work by the name of Dave Azeveda showed up, and showed the both how to REALLY play..... lol Man, was i ever humbled by all 4 of them (Dillon was shreddin' it up as well ;-)

I've said this several times here at TGP.

If we all auditioned amps and guitars blindfolded, we'd have a lot of surprises and a lot more money in the bank.
Ears and hands will be more truthful than eyes and egos.

Just as a similar example.. I use a Dr.Z EZG-50 for most of my gigs.. but I have a Epiphone Triggerman 1X12 combo that I use for my small gigs. I upgraded it with a weber speaker & it sounds REALLY good.

I end up getting compliments all the time on it & when I tell them its about a $200 amp they are just amazed.

How does the Vox Valvetronix compare? Similar lineup and price. Both offer modeling and effects. Both have great sound.

Has anyone A/B them?

I too would like to know this. I'm currently considering the Vox VT50 vs. the Roland Cube 60. I've heard that both have great tone and are good for smaller gigs. I'm leaning towards the Vox because it has more amp models (22 vs. 9), but I also know that quantity is not necessarily better than quality.

If anybody that's played both can chime in, it would be much appreciated. :BEER

I've met a handful of players in clubs over the years who had just phenomenal tone.. and without exception, every one of them played with gear most would consider 'junk'.

Like I heard years ago on another internet message board.. it's the Indian, not the Arrow, that makes the bulls eye.

But regardless of skill level.. those Roland Cube amps are great sounding rigs.

Going on looks alone, it looks like the Cube is better built.

I did a gig with a miced up Roland MC... you should have seen the looks I was getting when I walked in with a battery powered amp and a guitar...

But then when we started playing...:thudMaybe the funnest gig I've done.

I've long thought that at a certain point your gear fails to make a significant difference to this listener. The player hears and percieves nuances in his/her playing and sound that are of no consequence to anyone else. The important thing is that the player is inspired and happy with the performance of his equipment.

My bandmates can barely tell a difference overall in various rigs I play through and they know my playing really well. Can they tell the difference between a hot rod fender and a blackface pro onstage? Probably not.

i've seen a lot of street musicians use the cube and their tone is always surprisingly very good.

Amp technologies are just getting insane as time moves on. Hell, I remember when TVs were just an oval screen, and were more green and gray instead of black and white. And look where THEY are now........
Oh man, that just made me feel old........:rotflmao

Don't keep us hanging, Jim - Which speaker, exactly?

Yep, I own a C60 too...............my back loves it too.

Best, Pete.

I brought my Cube 60 to a mini tone shoot out we did at my buddy's place. very early 70's SF Deluxe Reverb, Heritage Victory, Alessandro (working dog I think?), Valvetech VAC25. We were all kind of space jamming and then we decided to throw my Cube 60 in the mix to compare. We were bouncing back and forth between all of the amps and the Cube 60 (blackface setting) and I distinctly remember all of us being really impressed... but surprisingly silent at the same time...
:thud
Fr*Trane and Orogeny told me the Cube 60 was great and they were spot on. The BF and the JC120(?) clean models in particular.

Vinni will tell you in the video, but for those of you who want to know now, it's an SA10M75 30w.

Hey, isn't that speaker a 10?

I believe the Cube 60 has a 12 doesn't it?

Also, in the video (and hey that Vinni can play too, huh?) he talks about the amp being a Kustom, not a Cube 60.

Did I miss something?

thanks

Well, I guess the best thing you can do to improves your tone is...

practice like a maniac instead running the gear treadmill.

That video references the Cube 30 amp, which uses a 10, IINM (If I'm Not Mistaken).
