Sorry, I meant to say Marshall HAZE....

I called my local Sam Ash in Florida and asked if they had the Haze...sure enough they had both the head and combo.

I went down immediately to try out the head. I'm not interested in a combo.

First looks impression...it's small....no standby switch...looks cool

I plugged into it and tried out the normal channel. The clean sounded good but overall it was very boxy sounding (could have been the matching cab that was with it). I couldnt crank the volume to get it to break up naturally but I thought it sounded pretty good for clean. I used the onboard effects and they sounded pretty good.

I then switched over to the 2nd channel and was highly disapointed. It was thin, lacked high gain, and seemed muffled no matter what guitar I threw at it. I even cranked it and it seemed to open up a bit more but it really sounded like the tone knob was rolled back but it wasn't. I was not happy with it at all.

I went there with the intention of buying it if it blew me away...no such luck. :(

Perhaps it would sound better out of a better cab but I was really unimpressed. I had the gain all the way up on the 2nd channel and it just didnt give any natural sustain or harmonics. Very lifeless. It's too bad...I really wanted to like it.

The Vox Night Train wins hands down compared to the 15w Marshall Haze head.

Again, this is my opinion. Others may feel differently.:AOK

Remember, I tried the 15w head...the combo is a different animal.

And, everyone is different...you might like it. It just wasn't for me.

I hope mine gets one soon. That amp has me intrigued. The local GC said they're all going to California first and won't make it out east for months.

The soundclips from Marshall sure don't do it any favors

I saw one in the ProSound in Westminster, CO just this afternoon. Didn't try it, though.

I thought the same thing (about the muffledness) in some different youtube videos. Good to know it wasn't just the guitar/cab/setup.

I totally agree with you and it is this video that gave me major GAS for the head. It just sounds great with Doug Aldrich playing.

But, first...I think Doug can make any amp sound great. 2nd...I think he had the amp fully cranked on the volume (and gain cranked) to get that thing to sing like it did on the video.

3rd...I might have had a dud.

Or, the amp just sucks for my ears.

Either way, I prefer the Vox Night Train or Orange TT over the Haze. Keep in mind I am a huge Marshall fan so this is a disappointment to me. :dunno

This is exactly what it sounded like to me when I tried one (though a 1960V30 cab)sounded good quiet too.
go try another one to be sure.
The one I played destroyed the Tin Terrorist and the Night Bus.

I will try another if I can find one. I think you and I have different ideas of how tone should sound. :phones

For my money, the Vox Night Train is the best out there in small watt heads (mass produced not boutique).

Even with the demo's on youtube the Vox is more versatile and has more balls.

I'll give it another go on the Haze...

I've wondered if anyone has tried putting EL34's or 6L6's in those 6V6 models, probably not yet because they are so new. I think it might be interesting to do some experimentation there.

I tried the both yesterday and I wasn't really that impressed with either.

Went into Sam Ash and they were just pulling them form the boxes. The small stack didn't have the traditional Marshall sound. It was a little thin and raspy as someone else mentioned, but I think the cabinet might have been the culprit. I'd really like to hear this amp through a different cab.

The 40 combo sounded better IMO, but I preferred the dirt channel over the clean channel. The clean channel with the bright switch on was unusable IMO. Just harsh, thin and nasty sounding. Turned it off and it was little dark, but had the traditional Marshall clean tone. The OD channel really had some of that Marshall vibe going on, but I think they must use the same speaker as in the stack. There's a small button you press to switch between channels and when you switch you can hear a clicking noise. Also, the effects stopped working within the first five minutes. However, while they were working they sounded pretty decent IMO. Looked on the back of the amp it it was built in "India". Damn, they'll build them anywhere except in the U.S. and England it seems. What a shame.

Keep in mind these amps were just out of the box so the speakers certainly weren't broken in. Neither really knocked me out, but I'd say both are decent in their price range and I think a different speaker might make a worlds difference. Not what I'd buy with my money, but I'm sure some will like them just fine.

BTW, the combo is loud.

It sounds like these new marshalls have some quality control issues.

Have you seen lots of reports of issues?

So far every thread on every forum that I have read makes mention of something breaking. I've heard of one guy taking it home it breaking the same week. Another guy showed up to guitar center and the one on the sales floor was broken. And a guitar center employee said that when the marshall rep showed up to show the amp off to them he plugged it in and nothing it was also dead.

These are all just hearsay, but reports like these don't bode well. And this amp was made in China. I havn't heard anything bad about the Night Train (I also didn't research it as much).

Some JJ 6V6 tubes will get you pretty close to 6L6 territory.

The Haze combo I played sounded muffled. I thought it was terrible. There was a Hughes & Kettner 20th anniversay 20 watt combo next to it that kicked the Haze to the curb. Maybe it was a lemon and I will definitely try one out again but I was very disappointed. And I am usually a Marshall guy more than anything else.

I love that last comment: How about a demo for those of us who want to play MUSIC? :roll

I like the lead tones there but the few chords he played just sound muddy to me.

I bought the Haze 15w head last month. Yes it does sound thin and dark at low volume; this is common with small marshalls (e.g., Studio 15 and JTM 30s). However, give it a bit of volume and she sounds great. I use the OD channel (as I have a silverface princeton reverb for cleans) run thru an Avatar 2x12 cab. The stock tubes are good: JJ ECC83s and Shuguang 6V6s. I've had no problems with it. The Haze is a keeper.

FWIW, I got to spend a few minutes with a Haze combo last week, didn't really get to play it much and not at a reasonably loud volume. But it did have the pop when the channels were switched, and the effects button didn't work. This was supposed to be a new one right out of the box. Not good.

seems that there are some issues with them. Seeing as how production is from China (i think) isn't a good excuse. Edwards guitars are partially made in China and they are fine. My planet waves stuff was made there and isn't broken out of the box.
