Is there an anthology/greatest hits thing, or specific album that I should buy for my first Faces album?

Pick up the box set, "Five Guys Walk Into A Bar..." Four CDs of primo rock & roll!

I used to have "A Nod is as Good as a Wink to a Blind Horse", Ron Wood is waisted in the Stones.

By and large, the singles were their standouts. No surprise there, perhaps, but the albums were full of fillers. Some of the writing was iffy, to say the least. 'A Nod's as good as a Wink' is probably their best prime album, but I would recommend the new 'best of' collection that's just been released. Whatever you do, don't get the 'Overtures and Beginners' live album, unless you are really keen on hearing a group of VERY drunk musicians murdering their greatest hits.

I second the recommendation for the box set. That was my introduction to the band.

just bought small faces" first step" pretty good playing, the writing is not as strong, but it was Rod and Ronnie's 1st album. Great organ from mac and I had not idea Wood could once play...overall a fun album that just sound killer

Althoug I love "Every Picture Tells a Story", "First Step" for me was a great album; raw, edgey. Their version of "Flying", the humor of Three Button Hanm Me Down". I loved listening to that album.

Mac's organ work just kicks ass, and woody plays better than anything I ever heard him do in 35 years

I just bought all four of their albums, for about 6 or 7 bucks on Amazon.com
A nod is as good as a wink is classic, but Long Player is also excelent. There are some standout tunes on Ooh La la as well specially Glad And Sorry. I thought the first album sounded more like the stuff they did with Jeff Beck where as the following albums are what I think most people think of when they think of the Faces.
By the way I bought 2 Rod Stewart albums as well, the first two I think, which basically are Faces Albums as its pratically the same band.

A Nod is as Good as a Wink.. is absolutely perfect; a monument to the greatness of the Faces and rock music in general. I have listened to these songs consistently, year in and year out, through good times and bad, since the albums release. This music has become a part of me.

+1 on the first 2 or 3 Rod albums. He was a real artist then. I tend to favor the tracks that had JBG drummer Mickey Waller on them, but it's all good stuff.
Then Rod came to the US to change his sound and become a Star... (it worked, saleswise- fwiw).
For Faces recordings, I'd go with the box set.
Saw the Faces live twice. Best drunk rock and roll band ever:) . Ronnie and Rod may have gone on to bigger things, but never better, imo

The box set is really fantastic, but if you don't want to shell out the price, The Best of Faces (http://www.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&sql=10:fpfqxqrkldde) is superb, as is the two-disc Definitive Rock Collection (http://www.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&sql=10:jxfuxqwrldde).

Most boxed sets are a disappointment, but this one is not. If you love the Faces, it's a must.

I just got "Snakes and Ladders" a best of on Vinyl, that will hold me until I find all there albums--no more CDs for me.
Rod was on Jay Leno last night, anyone catch it? Not bad, Rod is still very cool in my book, an icon. He talked a bit about "old times" playing soccer and mentioned playing in a band called the Faces, "you might have heard of" he said.

So glad someone posted the warning about the live album - wonderful band (Pool Hall Richard is a favourite to this day), but possibly the worst live album ever released.
