I tend to prefer albums cut live in the studio with no overdubs. I've had a hankerin' to listen to some new music that is just good Les Paul, bass, and drums, with vocals; minimal if any overdubs. I'm thinking something like ZZ Top's first albums. Problem is, I can't seem to find it.

I get my fix of Tele/bass/drums from Jim Campilongo. There are also tons of Strat/bass/drums to find. Any recommendations?

Cream and Free...anything live by them is other worldly good!!!

If you don`t mind a few keyboards, try some old Mayall/Bluesbreakers. Clapton, Green and Taylor. All LP tone.

pretty sure the first Montrose record was a Lester, please forgive the few and tasteful overdubs

Too add to the aforementioned, Mike Bloomfield.

Keyboards too, but pretty bare recordings.

Early Gov't Mule if you haven't heard it yet. The later stuff is great too, but with the addition of keyboards. Warren Haynes' solo album is also worth a listen.

That was pretty much exactly what I was going to say.

Those old Foghat albums had a lot of LP's on them.

Also, try Mountain! Or, Bowie's The Man Who Sold the World album.

Ah ha, a reader ;)

Then I would agree on the Gov Mule suggestion.

I'd have to throw in Velvet Revolver too even though I don't listen to them myself. But you KNOW that's a Les Paul with kickin bass and drums.

Black Label Society. I know Zakk gets a lot of flack, but is mostly Les Paul and kickin bass and drums.

Thanks dlguitars for clarifying my OP. I love all that old stuff, Free, Cream, Mountain, etc. In fact, those bands are just what I was thinking of; great guitar rock with great players. I was hoping to find some new music in that vein, without getting heavy metal.

I think you'll be hard pressed to find anything recent that doesn't have multiple overdubs and layers of guitars.

That said... I've been listening to Black Stone Cherry's "Folklore & Superstition" lately. Big, thick, meaty Les Pauls throughout. Also check out the new Green Day- the few cuts I've heard are very good although it's largely LP Jr's.

Funnily enough, the current weapon of choice for rawk music is the SG.

Priestess, Nebula, Electric Wizard...

Rose Hill Drive's first record is like that. Also check out Alvin Youngblood Hart's "Motivational Speaker." It may not be all Les Paul, but it still kicks my ass.

It's not necessarily only one LP, and sometimes the other LP is actually a Gretsch Jet, but the first Darkness record is relatively new that certainly hearkens back to LP-based hard rock of the past.

The Cult. Not always exactly a Les Paul, but no wimpy foo-foo Strat tones.

Joe Bonamassa-seems to be doing it very well.

The Seahorses - John Squire (ex-Stone Roses), some Gary Moore, Creed (Tremonti uses PRS, but is close to a Les Paul)

for older stuff: Sex Pistols (Steve Jones), Ziggy Era Bowie (Mick Ronson),

Flash Lightnin. Up and coming back from Canada. Classic LP/bass/drum sound, very ZZ Top. Great band live, and their EP has some good songs too
