Which one? Ignore the usual questions of music style, what other gear I have, and the like and go with your gut.

SG Standard or Flying V? Gibson has them both priced at $1199.

My only con with the V is ,they usually have bigger cases ,so if you travel ,they take up more space

Both look & sound great but for me, the SG. Sounds better, more comfortable to play, looks better. SG Standards also get the nicer inlays and neck binding.

Flying V
definately more distinctive.

SG has a bound neck and inlays. V does not. Both are Mahogany with Rosewood boards. The V looks cooler. Also has a thicker body. Tough call.

I've always liked the sound of V's better, as well as the way they hang on a strap.

SG better sitting down
V better standing up

Are you Robert Fripp?

Not all Vs have rosewood. I know white ones have ebony.

first year faded V's (with Moon inlays) have ebony boards.
if you can find one that would be a great cheap way to start.

I get along better with SG's.... can't play a V sitting down...

Depends on how much high playing you want to do. V's are great for that.

As for seated position, all you have to do is put the crook of the v on your right leg, and play it like you would a classical guitar. Only drawback really is that you need to squeeze your legs together a bit, and depending on the v, you might have issues with either the strap pin or the output jack.

SG is lighter, and fits better in a conventional case. I like the v's a little better but it's really whatever you prefer the sound of.

Hard choice and I tend to have both in my arsenal. SG's are usually my #1 but there really is something special about rocking out on a Flying V. It is just made to rock and you know it the minute you strap it on. If you are playing rock through a Marshall, especially a stack, how can you not play a Flying V? Then grab your SG when you want to be Angus.:JAM

If I had to chose one or the other and I wasn't going to be on stage, I'd probably get the SG for now, but if you are on stage regularly I'd grab a V.

SG's for me.
I think they look better plus sound better clean & slightly overdriven.
Plus they're lighter and more comfortable to play

Depends how tall you are ;)

Seriously, I'm 5"8 and a V looks far to big on me(as does a 335) where an SG is a better fit.
You do have to adjust your right hand on an SG as the bridge seems to be really far forward.

SGs tend to slide around when you play seated. Vs are actually easier to play seated, just hold your guitar classical style (ie on your left leg if you're right handed), your wrist angle is better and more consistent with standing position (this is a requirement for my students and the first thing I tell them in a lesson).

Vs hang very well on a strap, and SG, by comparison, is neck-heavy... which can lead to shoulder fatigue, whereas a V is more balanced.

They both sound great and tend to have a tight, focused, punchy tone (although a familiar ear could tell the difference hearing them). No clear cut winner on tone.

Can't go wrong either way IMO.

You guys are missing the most important point. V's attract women. Decision made.

My V is the most comfortable guitar I have for playing standing. Seated, I use a tall stool and drop a leg. I love the looks my V gets. I'm a badass like Schenker, Albert King, and Lonnie Mack when I play my V :messedup :facepalm :D

I can never decide, that's why I got both. That said, I've got really bad GAS for a classic white V with an ebony board that I want to add a black pickguard and zebra pups to.

Hard call to make - SG's

Or V's:

Love 'em both, but I say "GO POINTY"

I like the V and it can be played sitting down very nicely by letting the V straddle between you legs. However, I have kept my SG longer than any other guitar and I will always have one, So I choose the SG.http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c128/JSalch/IMG_2741-2.jpghttp://%5BIMG%5Dhttp://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c128/JSalch/IMG_2741-2.jpg%5B/IMG%5D

my personal preference is the Faded series--I love the feel and resonance of that "barely there" finish....

The V - no brainer.

SG's (the worst guitar Gibson ever made) are thin & unbalanced compared to the V.

I prefer the understated look of the SG, unless you into metal.

To me V's are awkward. Ever try playing one sitting down? The SG is a classic and oh so comfy. Make sure you get the 50's neck because the thin necks are like rubber bands on an SG.

jeffwith1f
07-09-2009, 06:39 PM
I disagree. V's are the most comfy electric guitars to sit with.
just have to know how to do it. tuck the crotch over your leg. You get a quasi classical position. Very comfy.

you obviously have never played a sonex.

as for the OP, go play 'em both, one will prolly seem superior.

Well, I ended up going with the SG, and I’m pretty happy with it. It’s a great compliment to my Les Paul Std.

Although as many have indicated in this thread. It’s not so much an issue of either / or as much as it is which one to get first. I’m sure I will snag a V eventually.

Here’s the new SG:

GAS is a terrible thing, I just picked it up and the zebra pups have been ordered (along with a black truss cover).
