Well my band got a 5000W generator, and we are trying to play outside gigs at a few places. The only thing I'm worried about is the fluctuation of the output from the generator. Has anyone else used generators for power amp's before? And if so what precautions must be taken in order to keep the amps safe.

Never used 'em for that purpose but I did have reason to use generators out on the flight line to power test equipment-torque testing, vibration surveys, prop balance and the like. The ones we used were exclusively made by Honda. They made lots of nice clean stable 120vac and were also quite economical.

The load the amplifiers put on the generator isn't going to change that much so it shouldn't have problems coping. If you're running an electric jackhammer & compressor at the same time all bets are off.

A power regulator wouldn't hurt.

You're going to be running it at 1/5 its rated output at most. If you're concerned, don't start everything at once. Connect everything in the off position and turn things on one at a time. If it sees no load then all of a sudden a big load hits, that's where your voltage dips are going to happen.
