I have really been digging "When Shadows Collide with People" and "Curtains" lately. Any one else like his music?

HUGE fan! Go check out The Empyrean (I think I spelled it right) if you dig his solo stuff.

Yes. I have liked John Frusciante quite a bit since the 80s. Great sense of groove, and interesting voicings and note choices.

Yep. Just learned Under The Bridge. It was a forgotten goal from years ago.

Under the Bridge......just reaks of Hendrix like Strat tones. I'm not a big RHCP fan but I always loved that song!

Wow. Thanks for introducing me to his solo work. I like the Empyrean stuff best so far. His vocal ability improved a lot over the Curtains and
Shadows stuff that I found....
His voice sounds like a combination of Lenny Kravitz, Bradley Noel, and
the UB40 (Ali Campbell?) singer.

I've been a fan of RHCP since I was 12 (1999) when I first heard Otherside that my dad was gonna cover at one of his gigs. But as a pure reflex kinda thing, I always avoided his taste in music (ranging from Jimi Hendrix and Rolling Stones to James Brown to Robert Johnson), but now I really love having a dad with the same taste in music as me. Lol, it's 09:20 here and I've been up all night... I'm really rambling away here.
Anyways, John Frusciante is my #1 hero of all times and I love his ways of looking at things, even stuffs that has nothing to do with music and he is someone I'm really inspired by in everything I do, and for the last 3 years I've been listening to more of his solo stuffs than his work with RHCP.
Long, weird post, but hope you got some of it :)

I was listening to Dani California recently...
I know it's gets a bad rap for being suspiciously close to Tom Petty's Mary Jane however there are some really great riffs and tone going on in both the verses and hooks.
I appreciate his sense of taste...when to play and when not to. Great tone all around on that track

Have been for years. My favorite of his solo stuff is his first album: Niandra Lades and Usually Just a T-Shirt
It is so raw and recorded in his basement mostly.

Plus, the bass player from Fugazi plays on these recordings. He is awesome. Very improvisational. they were going for that stream of consciousness type of thing on the two ataxia records.

Love the Chillis. His solo work a little less so. Shadows Collide is my favorite. I wonder if he'll find another band during this long RHCP hiatus.

Hearing John on "Mother's Milk" made me pick up the guitar again after not playing for about 4 or 5 years. I have not stopped playing since. I love the music he makes whether it is RHCP's, Ataxia, Solo, or anything else he is involved with.
IMO, he makes the last few RHCP records bearable.

he is an amazing musician.
In fact I was listening to under the bridge last night and decided to really learn it instead of playing a watered down version of it. He's got a lot of interesting stuff going on.
I vividly remember watching some concert footage of John from a couple years ago and being completely blown away.... freakin' sick! I am a fan of RHCP but tend to zone out the vocals in order to hear the music made by John, Flea, and Chad. I can listen to those 3 working it out for days on end. John finds a way to express himself in ways reminiscent of guitar players that are long gone. And he isn't afraid to take risks and just go for it. You can tell in his attack and the way he improvises. Sure, sometimes he may fall short and things may not come out perfect... but that's what I really dig.
John's stylistic approach to the guitar and how it fits into a musical composition inspires me. It wasn't until I really listened to his solo work though that I realized how much more he has to offer musically. Solo or in a band, his chord work, sense of rhythm/timing, and use of musical space is impressive. Amazing musician. Acquaintances tell me that he's even better of a guitar player than he cares to show.
His personal story from youthful fame -> addiction -> near death -> sobriety -> today is a good one. He's a lot like many TGPers in the sense that he's very passionate about music, freakish about tones, enjoys using pedals/effects, and is very partial to vintage gear. He doesn't get much attention and he probably doesn't even care to. I really dig that.

Nicely said! I'm in the minority in I actually enjoy Anthony most of the time. He doesn't claim to be much more than he is, and I think the 4 of them together just have a ton of fun creating together.

I think Anthony Kiedis is the perfect frontman for that band. I'm not wild about his lyrics, but he does a great job focusing the energy of the band and riding the grooves in RHCP. And, as with all great bands, the total experience is well more than the sum of the individual parts.

I could gush all day about how much I love them as a band, but I'll leave it up to those of you who can say it better lol.

John Frusciante plays it straight from the heart and nut sack, or as the new agers would prefer to call it, the base chakra. The result is both beautiful and sexual, and there's nothing wrong with that. He is indeed a Funky Monk. I love that final scene of the Chili Peppers documentary where he throws his garbage bag full of clothes and then the guitar without a case into the back of the truck. I love those parts of BSSM where it sounds like he has plugged straight into the desk, or they've mic'd up an electric guitar acoustically. Totally exposed and confronting, and he gives it everything he's got. Inspirational.
Cheers....................................... wahwah

I now have plenty more of John's music to check out. To me, his music has a world-weariness and heaviness that is very interesting to me. His solo recordings that I've heard, I mean. Fantastic, indeed.

I really like his work with the Chili's- especially on the last CD, i like how he used all sorts of effects and textures to add to the songs. Listening to that album on headphones revealed many hidden layers.
I've only heard the "Niadra" album of his solo work, and found it a bit difficult, but that was a long time ago. At some point i may have to try out some of his other solo stuff.

Think he's a great musician & comes up with some wonderful parts
but IMO I don't find him to be all that funky ..
At least not in comparison to the funksters I listen to ..
but please note that that's not meant to be a putdown at all ..
The guys a great guitar player indeed & derserves nothing but kudos ...

Yes, that album is pretty tough to listen to a lot of the time, but his stuff after he cleaned up is amazing, especially the new album. He's such a good singer too.

Actually, among younger guitarist, I'd almost dare to say that he is the guitarist that gets the most attention. RHCP is the most tabbed band on the internet (with around 2500 tabs if you count RHCP + Frusciante's solo stuffs), they have more tabs than Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin and Gun's and Roses together, and the RHCP thread on ultimate-guitar.com has like 33k+ posts.

Here is some scary stuff: I actually really like John's playing better when he was on drugs I guess. I am very happy he got himself straightened out but I thought his music was best early in is his career and that is when he was on his road to death, unfortunately.

What I meant when I said John "does not get much attention and probably doesn't care to" is that he shies away from the spotlight and is a very private and introverted person. You won't catch him being an active endorser of gear, self-advertise himself indulgently in the media, or really push to get his work heard in attempt to sell millions of records. He plays and makes music for the love of it and wants to share his work with others. I believe the general public is more likely to recognize more modern guitarists like John Mayer/Slash/Brad Paisley/Zack Wylde/etc. And I bet many folks know who the Chili Peppers are and like their music but could not give you the name of their guitarist. RHCP has undoubtedly made a successful career for themselves, collecting awards and numerous accolades spanning 20+ years. The fans are responsible for the group's continued success and have gone on to create websites/publish tabs/contribute to threads/and on and on. I've been a fan John and RHCP since the 80's and have been a witness to John's personal and musical growth. I enjoy his playing when he was shootin'/smokin' up, recovering from addiction, AND his most current stuff today. He doesn't regret his past and in fact embraces the times he turned to drugs and almost died. It is that kind of journey thats allowed John to reach personal revelations and become the man he is today. I dig that.
At the age of 13, I picked up the guitar for the first time and was inspired by the likes of EVH, Slash, Joe Satriani, and George Lynch. As a college student, I hocked almost all my gear because I needed funds to travel with my girlfriend on Spring Break.. :bong :nuts :dunno... Different times/interests/priorities ... you know the deal. Now at 34-years-old, I pick up the guitar and play with much more passion and enthusiasm for music than I did back then. It's people like Page, Hendrix, Gilmour, SRV, The Edge, and John Frusciante that influence and inspire me .... Icons in my mind.

I really like "Curtains", but it is very much different than his work with RHCP. Much more raw, soulful, moody, and acoustic-based than his Chili's work.
