Where can i get a piece of square foam cut round and with a hole to match the speaker cone?
I tried to cut a piece with scissors, but it was sloppy.
Who do i go to?
Thanx

An electric carving knife cuts foam well

I don't think it needs to be super precise. Did you not notice an improvement as far as the beamy-ness or what?

I know its not what you want to hear but I've done 3 or 4 so far (for different amps) and you'd probably be better off just getting another $5 piece of foam and trying again now that you have the basic idea.

Maybe invest in a $3 exacto knife. That seems to work pretty good for me. Its really just a matter of finding something that you can draw on the black foam with and then following the line when you cut. I used this sort of silver ink stuff you can get at a drugstore. And if you are playing a guitar I find it hard to believe you wouldn't have the required hand-eye coordination for the cutting part.

Granted its not a real fast process and it takes some thought but you'd still need to get the right measurements of your amp's speaker cutout for somebody else to do it, and once you have that its some very basic arithmetic to outline the circle on the foam.

But if you find somebody who will do it super cheap I might give him a shot too. :D Good luck with it.

Set a 12" bucket on top of the foam and cut around it with a razor blade.

Then set a 3" can in the middle and do the same.

This is definitely the best way to cut the foam.

I use a can. It comes out a little larger than 3" but it's not a big deal.

I can't see any of my foam any ways so I don't worry about the slop.

I use a band saw to cut foam. Or a large hole saw to cut holes.

Put the foam in a freezer to harden it before you cut with the electric carving knife. Best...H

This is not necessary in my opinion. We cut foam on a regular basis with an electric carving knife and always get a very clean cut without having to freeze the foam.

I use a band saw to cut foam. Or a large hole saw to cut holes.Bingo. I just re-foamed a flight case, and the bandsaw worked beautifully. In the past, I've used unmounted hacksaw blades with great results.

Is a hole saw available in 3"? Does it hook into a power drill?

All my handcut 3" holes look like my 3 year grandson coulda done better. But so far they're behind grillcloth. But I now need to cut donuts behind an expanded metal grill on my Rivera cab, which I bought many years ago from the above Terry Hayes......

Not super precise, but any large razor blade works fine. Just let the blade do the work.

I just used a 12" piece of cardboard from a replacement speaker shipping box. A buddy at my local amp shop had one, as he gets speakers in pretty regularly.

I used that to trace the outside with a sharpie, then used a soup can to trace the inside.

From there I just used one of those carpet knives with the break-off blades to cut it. You just have to make sure to keep the blade straight relative to your outside surface. I ruined the first one I tried by beveling it.

As far as 'where' you'd take it to get it done, I have no idea. Im not sure what kind of places cut foam professionally, even in some other milieu.

But , how do you get (especially) the 3 inch hole to look good enough to use behind expanded steel grill? Hole saw?

Take a 3" can, use gaffer tape to attach a single angled razor blade to the edge of the can (the blade only needs to poke out a few millimeters). Then put the can in position, press down lightly and start twisting it around. The slight pressure into the foam will keep the can from wandering outside its circle, and as you spin it around, the blade will progressively cut the hole deeper. :aok

Note: don't do this on your sofa or favourite table. ;)
