Posted this thread in the Amp section, but it gets buried in a few hours and no replies:

I have an early 70s Orange cab, painted black then cleaned back to orange but otherwise in good shape. I had planned to load it with Fane 25w speakers for a Hiwatt kind of sound (it's a big, square cab with some porting) but it turns out I can't get the Fanes out of the Sound City PA cab they're in without destroying it (someone lock-tited the bolts AFAI can tell). So, now I have an empty Orange cab. What speakers did it originally come with? I had some black tab G12H-30s from 72 in there, but they sound better in a smaller, unported cab (or at least more Marshall-like). So, what would sound good in here? I have 3 Fanes left over from another project (1 alnico? 25w and a pair of ceramic 50w from the early 70s) but I don't have a speaker I can immediately think of that'd work for the 4th (since I don't need to decouple a ported cab). Will the orange cab sound good with the Fanes? How would a JBL E120 sound (got a few of those around)? Jensen (lots of those: P12R, C12R). Scumbacks? If so which version?

Most of those could be good choices. I prefer higher wattage speakers to go with Orange's. JBL's would be a great choice.

The 90's Orange 4x12 i had for a little while (while my friend was low on $$$---i sold it back to him)--- had Orange labeled G12T-75's---- everybody liked the sound of that cab

Some of the reissues also came with Vintage 30s.

Fanes should be original to that era cab. Huge low end, easy on the mids. Very nice: had one for years.
But if you are interested in trying to keep it "original", Weber has a nice version called the Axis 12. Not a bad price, either.

Pleasantly, there's a LOT more info on the web about Fanes than there was even a few short years ago. Yeah, this cabinet apparently had cast frame Fanes. There're now 4 modern choices for Fane like tone: the WeberVST, the Emminence they build for George Lynch, the Reeves you can't buy retail and Fanes own Medusa. The Medusa is apparently identical to the stamped frame Fanes of the late 70s, so a different sound than what I'm going for. Anyone have a comment on the other 3 choices?

Original Orange cabs had Fanes in it.LAter 70's had some Eminence big square magnet speakers.A few where loaded with Celestions, but Fane is the way to go.
