My good friend and teacher in life & music Charlie Mariano (November 11th 1923 - June 16th 2009) passed away this morning in Cologne, Germany...
I was very fortunate to have played and spent time with Charlie since 1983.
We'll all miss him and his beautiful alto sound... RIP

A great musician. I saw Charlie with Keith Jarrett's quartet back in the mid-70's; it was an unforgettable night.

So sorry to hear this. What a wonderful musician . . . he will be missed.

I always loved his playing on the Eberhard Weber records, expecially "Silent Feet". Just gorgeous.

Charlie was a giant in music, and spent the last half of his career in Europe
where he'd be better appreciated.

RIP Charlie ..

One of my jazz-sax heroes, very sorry to hear this.
He included music from all over the world in his playing, but it still sounded like his own voice.

RIP Charlie. I saw him with Eberhard in the 70's . I loved his collaboration with Edward Vesala as well playing the nagaswaram.

I'm so saddened to hear about Charlie Mariano, my sincere condolences, Paul.

My very first jazz album purchase (and first in a large collection of ECM recordings), back in '77 or so, was Eberhard Weber's "Yellow Fields".

I wore the grooves out of that album over the years and memorized every note. Charlie's exquisite improvisations have been a part of my internal soundtrack ever since. An incredible musician!

Regards,
Tim Gregoire
