Just curious, when you are setting you amp's settings where do you have your guitar volume knob? I've had players tell my they "tweak" with the knob at 5, and others insist full on is the best way to get your amp set.

The starting position for my guitar volume is about 3/4. That way I've got some room to go up or down as needed. I use my vol knob a lot.

The amp volume is set depending on the overall volume needed for the room. I'm running either a silverface deluxe reverb or a brown princeton. So depending on the room I might have some dirt from the amp to use or I might need a low gain OD. It all depends on the room!

I set the amp with my guitar volume full on, and then tweak the guitar for clean, crunch, lead as needed. I never need my clean volume to be as loud as my lead volume, so it's easy for me to get by this way.

I set EVERYTHING to my guitar's full volume, then back off to around 7 to find my clean and 8-9 for my small breakup on SCs.
With buckers I start at full and back down to about 6.

Volume full on here. I then just pull back a bit back for certain parts of tunes. I play mostly rock based music.

Similar to this approach.

I used to do the full volume (and still do from time to time). It all depends on the amp I'm using. With all the cool lower wattage amps that are single channel, I find that I like to crank the amp and then use my volume on the guitar to take it from clean to creamy smooth up top.

Gibson:

Both volumes on 10
Tone on 6 (lead pickup)
Tone on 7 (neck pickup)

Set up the amp for the loudest / meanest I need (just a bit of growl and overdrive - most players would call it CLEAN!).

Then I back both volumes down to around 8-9, which gives me my clean sound that can accomplish a bit of growl depending how hard I pick. Depending on amp I may need to make minor adjustments to tone knobs. When I need more volume, sustain, overdrive - I crank to 10. When I need more still, I stomp the boost pedal.

Tele:

Same thing, except tone and volume end up around maybe "9". Again may need to dial down (or up) some treble using tone knob.

Jazzmaster:

Same as Gibson, maybe a bit less on volume. The volume on a Jazzmaster is tricky since it's a 1M pot. It doesn't add much volume or hit the amp much harder between 7 and 10, it mostly just adds treble. So between 7 and 10 is largely tone / clarity adjustment, evolving as you turn up into how much treble end overdrive the amp is producing. It's a cool thing but not quite as easy as a Gibson to produce those clean to mean sounds just riding the volume knob.

I use my tone knobs more than my volume knobs. I don't boost my leads either. If for some reason I need to turn down quickly I'll use a volume pedal. And, I match all my levels to a VU meter across my amp 'patches' so the over all level is about all I need to set, then use my tones knobs if I need to 'smooth' back or 'cut' through better.

Les Paul:

Guitar volumes are at 10
Tone knobs are at about 2 (I like a less bitey and more smoothed out sound than most guitarist)

haven't had an amp that needed tweaking in a long time. Just a tone control on my musicmaster bass amp, and bass/treble on my champ. They're both set and forget. Do my tone tweaking from my guitar. If I were tweaking an amp, though, I'd do it with the guitar full up. That gives me my baseline, what I can get away with volume-wise if you will. Get it to sound good loud, it will sound good soft, too.

Volume on 10 for me.

I've tried turning it down for different levels of overdrive, but I've found that I lose too much treble, so I would need to install a bypass capacitor on my volume control so that I won't lose treble as I turn down. I just haven't bothered to do that.

Volume on 10 for ripping lead sound, back it off to fit song or fit underneath singer.

I usually have the volume and tone around 7 or 8 when setting up my amp and effects.
