Good day fellow forumites. How are the Danelectro Reissue guitars? Especially the 56-U2.. One of the sexiest guitars ever made, with one of the sexiest sounds. Does the reissue sound close to the original? Is it any good at all? I see they're really cheap..

I don't know how close they sound to the originals, but I've got an Indonesian-made RI '56 U2 and it sounds and plays great! Perfect for the spaghetti/surf/spy sounds in my surf band.

As someone that has owned several of both including 12 strings, I can say tone wise its not even close.. The ""reissues"" are a parody of the originals... Not in the same league..
That being said, the reissues intonate better, and are more user friendly IF you get a good one.. Some are really bad, but so are some originals.. If you want the tone, save a little longer and buy a clean used Silvertone /Dano.. The are cheaper than Dano branded guitars, and are the same guitars...

How much do clean original silvertone/danos go for?

I agree with bulletbob. I've got three vintage Danos and three reissues. The originals sound better. A vintage Convertible sounds far better than a reissue, although J.J Cale has been playing a reissue Convertible lately so go figure. Of the reissues I think the best of the lot so far is the Dano Pro. Seems like the pickups are hotter than most lipstick pickups. It sounds wicked, especially for slide. Some online stores may be shipping the Dead on 67 by now (mine won't be shipped for a couple more weeks). It got great reviews in Guitar Player and Premier Guitar.
I had a Pro.. yuck.. Right now all I have is an original 1457 amp in case Silvertone /Dano.. Red sparkle 2 lipsticks,, Tone to die for...

1458 amp in case Silvertone/Dano,, $350.. sometimes more depending on condition.. single pickup model.. I saw Mark Knopler playing one.. Tone to kill for..

1457 amp in case guitar.. Silvertone/Dano.. Bigger amp in case, 2 pickups.. $450-550...condition dependent

A re finished solidbody Dano with 2 pickups and trem just sold for $250 on ebay.. NICE deal there.. There are deals out there.....

For the most part I agree, especially with the assessment of the re-issues, but for someone who wants the Dano tone in a higher quality instrument, you can also go the Jerry Jones route for a pretty reasonable price.

Right Jim.. the JJ models are truly fine reproductions.. The only problem is, the are sometimes more than the originals!.. The solid body original Danos are rarer, but I see good deals on them at times.. a REAL nice refin just sold on ebay for $250.. I would look at that kind of stuff personally. bob
