View Full Version : Benson live Billies bounce......
:jo
Working through his solo on this one. All you can say is damn. There is no guitar player who has lines that hip. Work through it yourself and see. The way he voice leads even in the fastest passages. He hears EVERYTHING. His line will bounce between moving the bass line, middle voice and top note of the given chord, with each one reaching the perfect resolution, all in single note lines. Truly unique and incredible playing. You can not play like that without hearing it all. What a talent.

Yep. The one with Herbie on piano, and the conga player (Ray Barreto?) I remember copping a soulful double-stop lick he does in the intro...first few bars. There's a live Benson boot from 1972 or so...I think it was called Casa Caribe or something. He plays a bunch of standards. I used to use one of those primitive "phrase sampler" devices and try desperately to figure out his lines.
wait till you stumble onto his "picking method". you think you're frustrated now...

The version on Blue Benson has been a 'guitar solo' treasure for me since I was about 10 years...my mom and dad had the record. That's still one tune I haven't even learned the head for. Damn that's a good tune, and Benson walks all over it.
I can't get the audio to work for the youtube clip :( but I can imagine it's a mind blower, I'll check it tomorrow again.

Amazing.
James Moody sounds great as well. Sometimes when he plays out it sounds contrived and forced but here he's really killin'

This version is from 1988 Pori Jazz aired by Finnish TV. I was lucky to record it to VHS and transfered it to DVD couple of years ago. The program had Misty on it and burning uptempo version of So What -- I think I've seen them on Youtube, also.
Is that lick at 5'01 also on recorded version with Hebie Hancock?

Not to take away from the greatness of this playing. It should be noted that George has been playing Billie's Bounce for about 40+ years.

Seeing that he was in his 40s in that video, I guess he was playing Billies bounce from birth. :crazy Lol!
In any case, that makes it even more incredible because it remains so fresh. Listen to all the different versions on it you can find. Totally different solos everytime. The man is one of a kind.
