Hey,

I have an AC30 right now and it's great, but it's way too loud for me. I'm wondering about getting something lower watt. I'm gigging with it but we need really low volumes. I'm thinking something 10 watts or less. I love the british EL-84 vibe so I'm looking for something like that.

Right now here's what I'm looking at

Vox Night Train
Orange Tiny Terror
Vox AC4TV.

what do you think? What would be best? Something else?

I don't know what your budget is, but you could consider some of the Reeves amps. They've got the Custom 6, the Custom 12, and the Custom 10 HG (stands for High Gain)

The Custom 6 & 12 are more vintage voiced. The 6 has one EL84 & the 12 has 2 EL84s run in parallel single ended operation. You can get power scaling on any of them. Right now the Custom 10 HG is discounted, the head is $849. That's a pretty great deal for a made in America handwired head!

The Reeves are great, but If....... you want that Vox tone and can afford it, I would
run not walk and buy a Magic Amplification Brit.

Top Hat Supreme 16 - which is 16 watts and a AC15 influenced amp.

The Suhr Badger 18, Reeves 18 and Reinhardt 18 are all available with
power scaling.

That should solve your volume issues and every one of these is FINE quality.

The Magic Brit is still top of my list for an accurate hand wired Vox AC15 circuit
with exceptional quality.

I have the Reeves Custom 12 with PS and it rocks. from edgy British cleans to a great grind, this amp has it. But if I was to get another low wattage Reeves, it would be the 10 HG. Listen to the clip called clean to mean on the Reeves website.

+1 for the Top Hat Supreme 16. There is one for sale in the emporium right now for a great price.

You could have a look at a Goodsell Super 17. EL-84 based & has heaps of great reviews around here. The MKIII comes with reverb & tremolo too & is a great sized compact grab & go amp.

Not to steer you to unobtanium, but you really should try to hear a Bad Cat Hot Cat 15R
and the Cub II especially through a Celestion Blue.

I can highly recommend the Cornell Plexi 7.

switchable wattage , single EL84 tube, quality workmanship and very compact.....lovely.

Well, I'd look into the Vox AC-15 as well as those you've listed.

I have a Tiny Terror, and can get a pretty good Vox chime with it, but it has more Marshall tones in it too. Put a 5751 in V1 for more cleans and chime.

The Night Train sounds good on the demos I've heard. Haven't heard the smaller Vox.

If you want to spend more money, listen to a Matchless Lightning.

Based on my experience with his 1x12 18 watt F-2 combo, I'd recommend this:

If it needs to be smaller, I'd be pretty tempted to get this:

great suggestions. the reeves is especially interesting as i'm mostly looking under $1000.

I'm also wondering about just getting a dr z brake lite attenuator. Do you think this would work well enough at the kind of low volumes I'm hoping for?

For a very cost effective, very accurate Vox circuit with some great creamy/chimey tones I recommend the Winfield Cyclone.

http://www.winfieldamps.com/

2 - EL84 and the coveted ef86 in the preamp section with a cut knob and Master Volume.
That being said I'm also selling a sweet Vox AC15H1TV in the emporium as well (I know shameless plug, but I figured I would throw that out there as well :)

+1 on the Tiny Terror. I've done some mods to mine and it really sounds nice. They just need a little tweak here and there. Bias resistors, DPDT switch to keep the bias right when changing between 7 and 15 watts, pull the snubber cap on a plate resistor, change a couple of caps, you're good to go.

Sounds like a rebuild.

You might want to try out a Cornford Harlequin or Carrera - either one will give you those British tones at lower volume, although 6w is still quite loud at full bore.

If you want 10 watts & EL84's, look no further than the Alessandro Beagle. Check out this Youtube clip. This amp rocks and it's on my list of some-day-must-have amps...http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cihQXPd_vHA
