I need a beefy bridge pup for rock/hard rock and I don't like the mids in buckers or p-90s. Right now I'm deciding between Fralin's blues special & high output 9.7k, or the Lollar J-Street - which is a special t that's around 8.4k instead of 8k.
Gear:
50 wattish 2xE34L head - Marshally but w/some headroom
70s Hiwatt cab w/H's
SHO w/old Snapper for push
Using med/med high gain
Opinions?
Thanks.

Go for the Lollar J! I use these all the time and they get it done. Think along the lines of the Jimmy Page stuff. They have great low end and I never use the neck anymore!

I plan on it. I already ordered the Fralin high output but I'm still getting the J-Street. I've been planning on trying the Lollars and Fralins for YEARS but for whatever reason just never did - being poor may have something to do with it. Also, pickups are a crapshoot, man. You can waste alot of money trying these things. With pedals, amps, guitars etc... most places have some sort of return policy. With pickups (and speakers and tubes), the best you can get is an exchange.

Sorry if I missed it, but what kind of guitar?
If it's a strat, consider a Rio Halfbreed. Still stratty, still a single coil, but big and mean sounding.

Yeah, it's a strat but it has a large bridge route so I can put anything in there. I've had various strat, tele, p90s and humbuckers in it. Right now there's a Duncan quarter pounder in it but I want something more open - less compressed and midrangey.

If you're sticking with single coils, give the Van Zandt Rock pickup a try.

Have you tried the S/D Hot Rails. I had one in a Tele. It was definately "Beefy"

You might also try one of the single coil sized 'buckers...
I like the Seymour Duncan little '59....it seems to have less mids than the JB, IMO.
