View Full Version : What are the differences between the different Lovepedal Purple Plexi versions?

I see there have been several Lovepedal Purple Plexi versions. One is actually called the Plexi 800.

What are the differences? Which one has more mids, gain, etc?

Thanks!

also: any difference between the hand wired ones & the newer ones in terms of sound?

If there's ever a difference in handwired vs. pcb it's because of the components themselves being slightly off from their measured value. If you want to see the mythbusting video, look up gearmandude on youtube and check one of his newest videos out. He did a side by side of a breadborded(hand wired) Timmy versus a new pcb Timmy. I sure can't tell a difference.

My question wasn't about the philosophy of PCB vs: hand wiring (as a matter of fact sometimes the PCB can be more consistent from unit to unit).

My question had more to do with the fact that Sean often changes components (and the sound of the unit) from version to version, batch to batch - sometimes even identical units from the same batch sound significantly different. I was just wondering (in addition to all the other different versions) what the difference in sound is in his PCB Purple Plexi (due to design - not the PCB itself). But that was just one of the many possible variables I was wondering about.

I see that the Purple Plexi 100 (the one with no writing) has lower gain than the Plexi 800. But there have been several of each. I have also heard some say the pedal has a scoop in the mids - others say no such thing.

Anyone?

Good question. To my knowledge, there are just the two types: original (or 100) and 800.

I had one of the original handwired purple plexis from '06 with the white lettering. DAMN. Since those days I have learned that I prefer amp drive to pedals but that was one very real feeling pedal. It had this low end resonance that made it feel like you were playing a much bigger Marshall-style amp. I have no idea if the differences in construction changes the tone. I also have not heard which if any values have changed over the years.

I have had COT50s and Dragons where Sean did different types in the same batch (germ vs. silicon transistors, etc.). I don't think he did that with the PPs of the same type (100 vs. 800).

I have seen them with writing, without writing, black writing, white writing, some 800's have the finger graphic pointing at the gain knob, some not, different knobs, etc.

I have also heard some youtube clips that sound barky & midrangey, and others that sound scooped. And it seems the new ones on his site are the 800's with the higher gain, but the actual mp3 of "unchained" is on a page that says purpleplexi100.....

Keeping with the Sean mystique it seems....

I've had both, the 800= high gain, modern, tight, saturated and loads of boost on the volume control.
Purple plexi or Plexi 100= much lower gain than the 800, very vintage tone, not as tight and saturated. Both pedals are great but different, it's not that one has more mids than the other because they sound very different, different styles of distortion. Both were handwired models so I can't speak to the difference between the handwired and SMD version.
Hope this helps!

I'm most interested in the Plexi 800 (looking for a searing high gain pedal - Plexi 800 sounds like it may work). But there are so many versions (like all Seans stuff) that it boggles the mind haha....
